World Book Day special: create your own copper bookmarks, half day course
Description
Discover the skill of saw piercing, with silversmith Charlotte Tollyfield, to produce unique copper or brass bookmarks to keep, or gift to the bookworm in your life this World Book Day. In this short 4-hour session, you will pick out your bookmark designs, learn how to pierce them out of copper and brass with a hand saw, add texture and detail, or perhaps a quote from your favourite novel using hammer and punches, and finally learn how to polish the metal. It will then be time to add the finishing touch with your choice of silky tassel before sitting back to admire your handiwork with a well-earned brew. From meeting you at the entrance to Persistence Works studios, where her practice is based, in the heart of Sheffield, Charlotte will guide you through the whole experience, providing practical demonstrations along the way, and advice on choosing your designs. She will also keep you topped up with tea, coffee and light refreshments to help sustain the creative juices. Examples of what you can create will be on display for you to look at, and a selection of ready-made templates will be available to use and adapt, or you can have a free rein and create your own unique design. Your finished pieces will measure approximately 14cm x 4cm, and each person should have time to complete 2 or 3 bookmarks. Whether you come along with your other half, your best friend, your mum, or on your own so you can create a surprise gift, this course is a great taster for working in metal and suitable for all abilities.
What's included in the price?
All materials are included in the course price, and all tools will be provided by Charlotte in the workshop. Tea and coffee with fruit and biscuits will be freely available, but as it is a short session, there will not be a break for lunch. Charlotte is also able to provide aprons, but if you have your own that you feel more comfortable wearing you can bring it with you. You may also wish to bring a wrist or elbow support if you feel you may need it. Flat shoes with a covered toe are essential as is comfortable clothing, and remember to bring your glasses! The Persistence Works building, where Charlotte is based, is a 10-15 minute walk from both the Sheffield central Train Station and Bus Station, and a 10-20 minute walk from all city centre Supertram stops.
