Description

Join us for a relaxed and inspiring watercolour workshop set on the river at the beautiful Oyster Catcher in Greenwich. In this calming creative session, you’ll explore expressive techniques for painting glowing skies and shimmering reflections, inspired by the sun setting over Canary Wharf and the Thames. This sunset watercolour experience is designed to help you slow down, experiment, and enjoy the process of painting in a welcoming, supportive environment. Whether you’re completely new to painting or looking to loosen up your style, this watercolour workshop focuses on atmosphere rather than perfection. You’ll be guided step by step through the process of building colour, layering washes, and creating movement in water, all while embracing the natural unpredictability of watercolour. The aim is to create something personal, expressive, and uniquely yours. How watercolour works (what we’ll explore) Watercolour is all about the balance between pigment, water, timing, and paper. During this session, you’ll learn how controlling the amount of water on your brush affects softness, flow, and transparency. We’ll look at how wet paper behaves differently from dry paper, and how working in layers allows light to pass through the paint and reflect back from the paper underneath. You’ll be shown how to: Judge the right moment to add paint for soft blends versus crisp edges Use gravity and brush direction to guide paint naturally Lift colour back out while it’s still damp to create light and atmosphere Layer transparent washes without overworking the surface These techniques are demonstrated slowly and clearly, so even first-time painters can understand how watercolour responds and feel confident experimenting within the sunset watercolour theme. What you’ll learn During this watercolour workshop, you’ll learn how to: Mix a harmonious, limited colour palette suitable for a sunset watercolour Build skies using layered washes rather than heavy detail Suggest cloud forms using soft edges and broken colour Create reflections and water movement using simple horizontal strokes Work intuitively while still understanding what the paint is doing This session balances creative freedom with practical knowledge, making it a rewarding sunset watercolour experience for all levels. What you’ll create You’ll complete at least one finished sunset watercolour painting inspired by the view across the river towards Canary Wharf. Everyone will be working from the same subject, but no two artworks will be the same. Some paintings may feel bold and dramatic, others calm and minimal — this watercolour workshop celebrates individuality and personal expression.
