Description

Join us at Smallholding Secrets for a day of weaving and relaxation. You will learn how to prepare fleece, set up a peg loom and weave a simple seat pad to take home with you. There will be a choice of fleece from different breeds of sheep so that you can add a variety of texture and colour to your seat pad. The fleece come from our own sheep (Ryeland x Kerry Hill, and rare breed Balwen) and from a local farmer who has several breeds. We will be working in the marquee, so in the fresh air, but protected from the sun or rain, or in the cosy log cabin. The day will start with a talk about sheep and fleece over a cup of tea and piece of homemade cake. We will then take a look at the peg loom and prepare it for weaving. A delicious homemade lunch will be served before continuing the afternoon weaving and then learning how to finish off your seat pad. The opportunity for another cup of tea and more homemade cake will finish off the afternoon with you taking home a beautiful seat pad for you to use. The end of the day is flexible, so you won't leave until your product is finished and you are happy with it. With the alpacas and sheep grazing peacefully in the field ahead of you, this really is a serene environment to just 'be in the present'.

Warping thread and fleece will be provided. You will have the use of a peg loom for the day. A delicious lunch will be provided, including homemade cakes. Worth coming just for the cakes!

Message the tutor

I spent much of my early childhood playing on my great grandmother's farm, dreaming of farming myself. My dreams came true when aged 13, my parents bought a smallholding in Carmarthenshire. As an adult, I worked in hospitality and then became a teacher, but was always anchored by the work on the smallholding. In 2021, I set up Smallholding Secrets to give others a taste of smallholding life and a chance to learn how to work with raw sheep and alpaca fleece by offering courses.
