Description

Celebrate the beauty of imperfection in this hands-on workshop and discover the modern approach to the Japanese art of Kintsugi. This ancient practice transforms broken pottery into something new and beautiful, with cracks embraced as part of each object’s unique story. Guided by specialist conservator Andri Maimaridou, you will explore the philosophy and history of Kintsugi while creating your own one-of-a-kind ceramic piece. For safety, a pre-broken bowl or plate will be provided, and you will use modern techniques to repair it — crafting a meaningful creation inspired by tradition. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for this therapeutic art form and your own handmade Kintsugi piece to treasure. (Please note: finished pieces are decorative and not food-safe).

Sussex Kintsugi offers mindful, creative workshops inspired by the Japanese art of golden repair. Founded by ceramics conservator Andriani Maimaridou, who trained at West Dean College and has worked alongside Kirsten Ramsay from BBC’s The Repair Shop, the sessions invite participants to transform broken pottery into unique “soul bowls” using modern, safe materials. Based in Sussex, we run welcoming classes in Brighton as well as pop-up workshops across the county, bringing the philosophy of Kintsugi to new communities and venues. Our sessions are suitable for complete beginners, private groups, or special celebrations. Each workshop combines craft, reflection, and storytelling, leaving you with a beautiful piece to treasure and a new way of looking at imperfection.
