Introduction to Lettering & Engraving - Stone Carving Skills

X

Description

Taught by a monumental mason with years of experience, this practical course introduces the principles of setting out lettering by hand and cutting inscriptions into stone. This is a three hour introductory workshop into the art of lettering and engraving, where you will be able to engrave a letter, number or an organic shape on Portland stone. During the session you will learn how to lay out lettering, how to hold and use the tools correctly to make controlled incisions into the stone where a level of concentration and coordination is required. Suitable designs and templates will be provided, although you are most welcome to bring your own ideas and designs to discuss with the tutor. Courses are held in our purpose built centre at Langton Matravers near Swanage, in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Area is part of the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World heritage Site, that reaches east to Exmouth, Devon and west to nearby Swanage. Our location is an inspiration in itself: look out east over Swanage Bay towards the Isle of Wight, look north over Nine Barrow and Ballard Down.
