This one-day course offers an immersive introduction to the art of furniture making using traditional hand tools. Participants will embark on a hands-on journey to craft a small coffee table using time-honored techniques such as mortise and tenon joinery. Throughout the course, participants will learn fundamental woodworking skills, including wood selection, measuring, marking, sawing, chiseling, and assembling. The focus will be on understanding the principles of joinery and gaining proficiency in using basic hand tools effectively. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will start with raw materials and transform them into a functional and aesthetically pleasing coffee table. Emphasis will be placed on precision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail as participants work through each step of the process. Key Topics Covered: Introduction to woodworking tools and their proper use Wood selection and preparation Understanding mortise and tenon joinery Layout and marking for accurate joinery Sawing techniques for cutting precise joinery Chiseling and refining joinery for a perfect fit Assembling components to create the coffee table Finishing techniques to enhance the appearance and durability of the table By the end of the course, participants will have not only gained practical experience in woodworking but also a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and attention to detail required in furniture making. Each participant will take home their handcrafted coffee table as a tangible reminder of their newly acquired skills and accomplishments. Prerequisites: No prior woodworking experience is required. This course is designed for beginners with an interest in learning traditional woodworking techniques. Note: This course emphasizes the use of traditional hand tools, and power tools will not be utilized. Participants are encouraged to bring their enthusiasm for woodworking and a willingness to learn. You will not need to bring any materials with you. Lunch is provided on the day in our cafe. All courses are on site in Martock, Somerset and run from 10AM to 4PM Minimum age for this course is 16
