Description

This course is taught by award winning soapmaker, Emma Grosse who has over 13 years experience running her own soap business Soapology. Soapology Studio Nottingham hosts group soap-making workshops monthly on Saturdays and occasional Sundays. Held at our Soap Studio, in the town of Newark on Trent. The ancient art of soap-making is a collaboration of art and science and here at Soapology we love to teach enthusiastic newcomers to soap the skills of the business that we love. We start at the beginning and aim to have a lovely creative day and for you to leave with some skills, some soap and a smile on your face :-) Emma is a self taught soaper, with many years experience in soap-making and running her own soap business selling wholesale to retailers throughout the UK and direct to consumers at our local farmers market and online. The day is structured to give you the most time for hands on practice but with a healthy level of theory to give you the best possible experience. Morning • Brief history and basic chemistry of soap-making • Everything you’ll need to get started – ingredients and equipment • Safety aspects of working with Sodium Hydroxide • Preparation of moulds and moulding options • Using additives in soap such as flowers, seeds, oats, oxides, herbs, spices and clays • Colouring your natural soaps • Adding nutrient oils for various skin conditions • Blending Pure Essential oils for fragrance • Mixing, pouring, cutting, curing and storing your finished soap We will explore all of the raw ingredients that you can pick from to make soap and begin to look in detail using your touch and smell senses to start to learn about the oils and butters as we talk you through your first batch where you will watch Emma and ask as many questions as you need to get your confidence. Lunch We break for lunch and return buzzing with ideas and ready to get started on your first solo batch. Please bring your own lunch. Afternoon The afternoon brings plenty of experimentation where you will create 2 batches per person (time dependent) and get lots of practice in. Whatever you have made is yours to take home and use or give as gifts to friends and family who will no doubt be amazed at how clever you are • A demonstration by Emma • A supervised afternoon of soapmaking using a variety of oils, fats, butters and nutrient oils. • Playing with colours and fragrance options and experimenting with additives such as poppy seeds
