About the Course
This course is taught by award winning soapmaker, Emma Grosse.
Soapology Studio Nottingham hosts group soap-making workshops monthly on Saturdays and occasional Sundays.
Held at our Soap Studio, in picturesque Farndon, just outside the market town of Newark on Trent.
The ancient art of soap-making is a collaboration of art and science and here at Soapology we love to teach enthusiastic newcomers to soap the skills of the business that we love. We start at the beginning and aim to have a lovely creative day and for you to leave with some skills, some soap and a smile on your face :-)
Emma is a self taught soaper, with many years experience in soap-making and running her own soap business selling wholesale to retailers throughout the UK and direct to consumers at our local farmers market and online.
The day is structured to give you the most time for hands on practice but with a healthy level of theory to give you the best possible experience.
• Brief history and basic chemistry of soap-making
• Everything you’ll need to get started – ingredients and equipment
• Safety aspects of working with Sodium Hydroxide
• Preparation of moulds and moulding options
• Using additives in soap such as flowers, seeds, oats, oxides, herbs, spices and clays
• Colouring your natural soaps
• Adding nutrient oils for various skin conditions
• Blending Pure Essential oils for fragrance
• Mixing, pouring, cutting, curing and storing your finished soap
We will explore all of the raw ingredients that you can pick from to make soap and begin to look in detail using your touch and smell senses to start to learn about the oils and butters as we talk you through your first batch where you will watch Emma and ask as many questions as you need to get your confidence.
We break for a delicious lunch and return buzzing with ideas and ready to get started on your first solo batch.
The afternoon brings plenty of experimentation where you will create approximately 2-3 batches per person (time dependent) and get lots of practice in.
Whatever you have made is yours to take home and use or give as gifts to friends and family who will no doubt be amazed at how clever you are
• A demonstration by Emma
• A supervised afternoon of soapmaking using a variety of oils, fats, butters and nutrient oils.
• Playing with colours and fragrance options and experimenting with additives such as poppy seeds
At the end of your workshop, you can choose to purchase a starter pack of ingredients to take home and practice your new skill. The pack is £30 and includes :
• Coconut Oil
• Rapeseed Oil
• Castor Oil
• Olive oil
• Sunflower oil
• Sodium Hydroxide
• Safety Glasses
• Container to use as a mould
• Swirling stick
• Essential oil
These ingredients will make over 4 batches of the soapology recipe that we use during the day. Just add easy to find additives like honey / milk / oats / poppy seeds.
Please advise us if you want to take one of these home with you so that we can make sure we've got some ready.

What a fantastic course, Emma is such a great teacher and explains everything in a way you can understand. The studio was very well equipped and smelt amazing, lunch was included which was really nice. Making the soap in the afternoon was totally amazing and you get to take it home with you. Overall a really great experience, I would highly recommend anyone thinking about it to go for it, you certainly won't be sorry x
Elaine Lorimer - - #25299
I thoroughly enjoyed my Soap Making day with Emma. She is a great teacher, imparting the theory in an easy to understand manner, and the take away pack is a comprehensive resource to refer to later. A lovely lunch was followed by a well prepared session in the workshop - what a great room! Emma moved from demonstrating to guiding to careful watching while I made my own batches of soap, enabling me to gain confidence in the process. Can’t wait to use the soaps (they have to cure for a bit first), but my house smells lovely while I plan my future soaps! The kit is well worth buying as well, giving me a chance to try again with familiar ingredients. A very highly recommended course!

LINDA FARRAR - - #19547
Really enjoyed this course. Soap making can be a bit “sciencey” and Emma got us through that easily and we have excellent course notes to refer to. The practical section was well thought out with a logical progression and plenty of time to explore her very interesting workspace and ask lots of questions. I travelled from Winchester and it was worth the drive! All in all a very good course.
Caroline Kirkman - - #19399
This was such an amazing course so glad i went along. Emma is lovely and her knowlege is vast
Katie lane - - #18768
I had a lovely day making soap with Emma and a small group. It was very informative yet concise with plenty of backup information to refer to in the future. It would have been nice to have made 3 batches of soap in the afternoon but there wouldn't have been enough time. It was nice to see everyone else's creations being made too. I also got the kit to bring home and make more soaps and I am really looking forward to experimenting. I would love to come back and do another course with Emma, it was a very relaxed day and we were well looked after. I am definitely going to be recommending to everyone I know
Anne-Marie - - #18412
I joined this course as I love essential oils and aromatherapy on the whole. Emma was very informative, straight to the point and a great teacher. I had never made any soaps prior to the course and had no knowledge of soap making whatsoever and yet by the end of it I made 3 batches of differently made soap which is now curing and smelling wonderfully around my house. Well done Emma! Most importantly for any beginner or enthusiast, I feel confident that I can repeat the whole process of soap making at my home and keep on using it. What can be better? I can highly recommend it to any person willing to try it for either personal use or in preparation of running your own business, you won't be disappointed :))
Iwona - - #17145
I had a really great day learning about the art of cold process soap making. Emma is very thorough and imparts a great deal of knowledge and experience. The course provides a very clear step-by-step guide, with the theory in the morning and then the pratical in the afternoon, and is the perfect introduction into the world of soap making. Overall all, a very relaxed and informative day.

My friend and I decided that instead of buying birthday pressies we would do an activity together.
The Soapology one day course was brilliant.
We are both complete beginners Emma was great going through all the science and health and safety aspects of soap making. She gave good examples to explain the complicated stuff which really clarified the process. After lunch it was all hands on soap making and soon we were trying different essential oils and making different designs and textured soap.
Very good value for money
Detailed teaching and a takeaway handbook with everything you need to know to make your own soap.
And at the end of the day you take home the soap you have made which in our case was three containers of sweetly fragranced soap each.
Lunch was provided and Emma had catered for us as veggies.
Would strongly recommend this course we had a lovely day and met some very nice people on the course.

My mum and i went to the group course and thoroughly enjoyed it! During the morning session Emma went through the science & safety side of soap making. After a delicious lunch, Emma demonstrated how to make soap, using the cold process method, then we got to make 3 batches of soap, using different essential oils and natrual colours. It was a brilliant day all round. Highly recommended course for other budding soap makers.

Had a lovely day with Emma, which has now given me the confidence to do lots of my own experiments in creating my own soap. The day was very informative and well structured. She talked through the necessary chemistry of soap making in the morning and then it was practical, hands on in the afternoon. I took away lots of soap that i’d made and loads of enthusiasm to make more. Thanks Emma!
Helen - - #15524
Very informative day, starting with the history of soap making & it's composition, right through to creating our very own bars of soap. a very relaxed atmosphere & a very interesting day with a light lunch supplied at lunchtime. I would not hesitate to recommend this course.
Kevin - - #14784
An interesting and insightful day of what goes into soap making. The workshop struck the right balance between the theory aspect which was an overview of Science, Maths and the Creative side and then the practical part of actually making up our own soap. It was quite fun in choosing our own ingredients such as colour, essential oils and herbs. I purchased the starter pack and will be looking forward to adding my own additives and creating pretty patterns! Emma was lovely and welcoming which makes all the difference in learning. The day left me with lots to think about for potential ideas. I would recommend this workshop for anyone who wants to get a taste of this subject before they actually commit.
Nari - - #14386

I also bought a starter pack to experiment some more at home ... thank you for a lovely day Emma!!
AVIVA and ANNE - - #13984
A really good course. The morning's theory made so much sense when we were let loose with materials in the workshop during the afternoon. There were 6 on my course, the maximum that Emma has, but we were all able to make 3 batches of soap, learn from what others were doing and never felt out of our depth. I'm so pleased with what I have achieved - even the batch with the difficult to use thyme scent. I was really impressed with what was included in the starter pack and have lots of ideas for batches 4 - 7! Thank you.
Emma - - #13981
Had an awesome day with Emma yesterday learning all about the science, maths and creative side of soap making! She's a brilliant teacher and I loved the whole day, lunch was lovely and the practical session in the afternoon was flawless. We all left with big smiles, 2 containers of soap which I'm dieing to cut up today, a freebie and a booklet with everything from the day in it so we can repeat the process at home. I purchased a starter kit at the end of the day for a very reasonable price and can't wait to get stuck in!
Thanks for a great day Emma!

A delicious lunch was then provided before heading into the workshop for the fun part :) there were five of us on the course and Emma was very patient in taking us through each step of the soap making process advising on which essential oils work well together and the correct way to blend all ingredients. The course consists of theory in the morning followed by actually making your own soap in the afternoon. I have since made several batches of soap at home, using the handout as a guide. Jill - - #11837
Big thanks to Emma for a soaptastic day! Interesting, informative and thoroughly enjoyable. I was nervous about the maths and chemistry and working with lye but Emma made it really clear. Great to go home with a guide I will refer to again and again.
The first half of the course was the necessary theory, then after a tasty lunch, we experimented with fantastic oils, butters and techniques and came out with varied soaps I'd happily pay a lot for in a shop! Not bad for a first try. Can't wait to try my own recipes with more confidence.
Overall, I can't recommend this course highly enough for anyone interested in natural soap making.
Lena - - #8934
This is a really good course. The first half of the day is theory and lots was learnt.
A really nice lunch with a good discussion. The afternoon was spent creating three batches of soap (and thats a lot of soap!). Lots of fun and experimentation getting different smells etc. Emma is clearly an expert and the course ran smoothly.
We have just taken our soap out of the moulds twenty four hours after the course and its now drying - you get to learn all of this. We also purchased a kit from Emma that will allow us to make a batch under our own steam.
Jeremy Wyman - - #8866
I really enjoyed the basic course that Emma took us through.
The course was split, with theory in the morning and practical in the afternoon.
A course designed not to be complicated but enough to allow you to make more soap the correct way in the comfort of your home.
I'm sure after practice I'll be considering a more advanced course.
An enjoyable course and recommended.
Steve Singleton - - #8523

Judi - - #8011
Had a wonderful day with Emma on her soap making course, this is something I have been wanting to do for years! She gave us a excellent hand out & talked us through it explaining all the science & calculations while still keeping our interest. After all the theory, cake & lunch we got down to the actual making of soap. With help & guidance from Emma we all made 3 batches of soap, giving us the opportunity to try different colours, essential oils & effects.
I would recommend this course to budding soap makers & as well as people who just want to have a fun day trying out a new craft. Emma also runs more advanced courses, which I will be back to learn some more.
Mary Anne Robbins - - #7995

With 4 people in the group it was great to see other people's choices of colours or essential oils. Emma was perfect host and the whole day had a lovely relaxed atmosphere. I loved that you could purchase a starter kit - I've already made 2 batches myself. I would definitely recommend this course.

An excellent and well taught course including everything you need to know about cold processed soap making. There was plenty to learn from the day and we all managed to make plenty of soap of our own fragrance and design to take home. If you are looking for a soap course or just want to have a dabble this is definitely the course for you.
Sam - - #5936
An excellent course, guiding you through the soap making history, methods, ingredients and recipes for making a natural high quality soap.
The morning session was informative and the afternoon session a hands on workshop. I made 3 soaps and Emma was very generous with the range of additives, essential oils and colours which we could chose, and of course with her professional teaching skills.

For my Birthday my children gave me a Soapology Voucher, I attended a full day course last Saturday at Emma's Studio in Farndon and had an absolutely brilliant day. Emma has a wealth of knowledge and is passionate about her craft, her patient and encouraging teaching style made it easy for me to learn and understand so much about the art of soap making during the day, along with the three batches of soap which I made, we were also given course notes to take home, these will be very useful for referral in the future. I treated myself to a 'kit' too so that I can make more soap this week (already thinking of new fragrance combinations). Emma provide a super lunch and offered lots of refreshments during the day. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone. Thank you Emma, hope to see you again soon.

Caroline - - #5174
I had an amazing day learning how to make soap yesterday at Colwick Hall!
Emma was so welcoming and a great teacher. She was patient in answering all of our questions and thoroughly explained everything. Refreshments were provided for us and after the morning session which was theory based, we were treated to a lovely lunch.
Then the fun! In the afternoon we started to make the soap. Everyone looked like they were having a great time, especially when they got to the colour and additive section. Choosing the 'toppings' and additives was my favourite part. Emma again was really patient with me when I changed my mind about what I wanted on top of one of the soaps and she helped me to make the most of our time.
We made three batches of soap all together to take home.
I would love to come back and this time bring my mum. It was a great day full of delicious smells and I would thoroughly recommend it.
Cheers Emma for a fab day!
Bonnie King - - #3428
A packed day full of interesting information about a lovely product, had lots of fun deciding on my own special soap unique to me as every batch is totally different. All aspects of soapmaking were covered and this information was available to take home along with the soap you made on the day. Lots of support from all the team at Soapology with nothing being to much trouble.
The day included a lovely lunch with plenty of tea/coffee or water to drink throughout the day.
I would recommend this course to anyone. Thank you Emma and all your team for a great day.
DianneShaw - - #3427
This was a very interesting day, with lots of soap making fun. The tuition was expertly executed, and a very informative Soapology folder of the history of soap, and how it's made. It also includes recipes and tips for you to make soap at home.
We had a break for a lovely 2 course lunch and plenty of coffee, tea and biscuits available all day.
