Description

Sculpt a Green Man image into limestone. One of seven themed stone carving weekends, based in my Chilterns studio. Learn from scratch. No need to bring any artistic skill along with you, as this will be developed (I promise you, it will) as you progress. We shall study real world stone carved Green Men design (there's no shame in copying what's already out there), and unravel their complexities before sketching your chosen example. And then to hammer and chisel. Design templates are provided, but students are welcome to bring in their own favourites. Our stone carving courses are so good for you, that they now feature as one of the activities offered by Reading Green Wellbeing Network. By the end of the course you will have completed your stone sculpture, and be equipped with the knowledge of how to continue with your new-found skill at home (or in my studio, if you prefer). So you will leave the beautiful studio location with your finished piece, on Sunday evening, knowing how to create a workstation at home, how to locate stone, where to buy tools, how to progress your skill. Maker

Having first trained as a stone mason, it wasn't long before I became enraptured by the beauty of living form, represented in stone. And the cross over to figurative sculpture was therefore inevitable. I have been passing on this infatuation to individuals, and groups for nearly fifteen years. I am almost permanently the sculptor in residence with one Reading-based community organisation, or another : ranging in diversity from Reading University, to (presently) British Islamic Gardens. My aim is to encourage others to love stone sculpture, as much as I do ; so these weekend courses invite all students to return to my studio, to finesse their work lovingly, after their course, for free,

FAQs

All students are very welcome to return to the Tuition Centre to complete their work. There is no time limit, and it is free to do so. Students are welcome to return as many times as is necessary. Workstation space will need to be booked, but this is easy and free.

Yes.
You need only just pay for the course you've selected, let me know, and I shall post the relevant course gift voucher with the next ten days. If it's urgent, there may be a delivery charge.

Not at all.
The studio provideds safety glasses that easily fit over spectacles. Although spectacles on their own are also adequate eye protection for our basic stone carving courses.

Rough and ready, is the best idea.
If your sleeves are loose, then you'll need to roll them up, or bind them.
Closed footwear please - ie no sandles or flipflops. Falling stone chippings can hurt !
Stone dust readily transfers from your clothes to yor car upholstery - so maybe bring a change of clothes or an overall.
Bring something warm to wear during the cooler months. We'll be working in an open-ended, converted barn - so there is a healthy air through-flow, which can chill you down sometimes.

No.
The Basic Stone Carving courses are designed to teach the technicalities of working stone only.
However, you'll soon discover and overcome the myth of 'Good' or 'Not Good' at art, and lose those inhibitions !
Your tutor will guide you through the arty side of selecting a subject to sculpt, and where to position your image upon the stone.

The work benches are in an open-ended barn, so there is plenty of air through-flow.
Dust masks can be provided, if required.
As with all student health considerations, it is requested that you let your tutor know in advance, so that provision can be made for you.

The lifting and carrying of stone is unnecessary for the course - and is indeed forbidden. Your course tutor will do that for you.

Students are only permitted to work with limestone. The dust created from working this stone is harmless to the skin and safe if breathed in.
