Learn DIY fundamentals in an intensive 4-day crash course. What you’ll learn: - Essential tools: which tools to buy & how to use them. - Essential materials: fixtures, fittings & basic materials. - Essential skills: sawing, hammering, drilling & sanding. - Essential skills: putting up level shelves that will hold weight. - Decorating basics: repairing damaged walls – using filler effectively and sanding to smooth. - Decorating basics: using silicone & sealants. - Tiling basics: wall and floor tiling & grouting. - Carpentry basics: replacing skirting board. - Electrics basics: Change a fuse, wire a plug, wire a socket, plus light fitting and switch (subject to time). - Plumbing basics: fixing a leak, fitting a sink, plus plumbing appliances (subject to time). Courses run from 9am – 4.00pm with a break for lunch and two coffee breaks. This may not seem like a long time, but trust us, you’ll be shattered! Four day courses are run on 4 consecutive days. In the event that not enough people book on to a particular date, we may have to rearrange courses. We will let you know as soon as possible if this is the case. In this DIY crash course, you’ll learn the fundamental knowledge and practical skills necessary to tackle a range of tasks around the house. From selecting the right tools to mastering essential techniques, the aim is to equip you for some serious home renovations! The course will be tailored to the skills of those present, but you can expect to cover most/all of the following over 4 days: Tools: - Exploring different types of tools. - Selecting the right tools for the job & essential tools for beginners. - Basic maintenance and care of tools. Fixtures, fittings, and materials: - Overview of common fixtures and fittings. - Introduction to basic materials. - Tips for choosing the appropriate materials for your project. Essential techniques: - Sawing: Using handsaws and power saws safely and effectively. - Hammering: Proper hammer techniques for various tasks. - Drilling: Selecting the correct drill and mastering drilling techniques. - Sanding: Sandpaper selection and sanding techniques for smooth finishes. Putting up shelves: - Planning and measuring for shelf installation. - Installing shelves securely and straight! - Tips for achieving a professional finish. DIY basics: - Identifying common wall damage. - Patching small holes and cracks. - Repairing larger areas of damage with plaster or joint compound. Plumbing basics: - Locating and diagnosing common household leaks. - Repairing leaky taps and pipes. - Tips for preventing future leaks. - Plumbing and waste basics. - How to fit a sink. Using silicone & sealants: - Learn the proper techniques for applying silicone and sealants. - Practice sealing around sinks and other fixtures to prevent water leakage and improve insulation. Wall or floor tiling & grouting: - Cover the basics of tiling walls and floors, and tile your own plasterboard wall. - Learn how to prepare surfaces, apply adhesive, cut tiles to size, and grout the spaces between tiles for a professional finish. Electrics basics: Get a foundational understanding of electrical work for home maintenance. Change a fuse, and wire a plug and socket. If you fly through, we may have time to install a light fitting, or swap out a light switch. Get confidence to handle basic electrical repairs and upgrades safely, knowing when to stop and call for help! Carpentry basics: - Learn to cut and fit skirting board to finish off your walls. - Overall, this course aims to equip participants with practical skills that they can apply in their own homes to tackle common maintenance and improvement tasks effectively and confidently. It’s hands-on, allowing you to practice the skills under the guidance of an experienced instructor.
