Time to get your hands dirty and let the sparks fly as you make your very own dagger! Morning and Afternoon sessions are available. Discover the untold secrets of the art of blacksmithing at Oldfield Forge. Set in the very heart of the Herefordshire countryside our expert blacksmiths will guide you through each stage. Work as a team to make your very own dagger or small sword. This gift experience allows (almost) everyone to participate – from the intrigued novice right through to those with some existing proficiency, and enables them to test their metal-working skills. Children from the age of 7 years can fulfil their dream of making their very own medieval or family crest dagger. This is much more than your normal experience day! You can see, touch, smell and experience the life of a blacksmith, taking home whatever you make with us. Be sure to dress appropriately, remembering that in the colder months it can get chilly inside the workshop (despite the fires!) We will be here to meet you on arrival where we will get all of the boring (but essential) bits out of the way. Please bring the completed Health and Safety forms with you, it’s vital they are completed prior to your visit so that you are ready to start your day as soon as you arrive. What's included in the price?

All your PPE will be provided, so you will be all be ready to start your experience day with us! Oldfield Forge Academy is set in most stunning Herefordshire landscapes. We have Shepherd and Scandinavian Huts which you are welcome to use for refreshments or rest time before or after your experience. We welcome you to bring your own picnic from home or, if you wish to order a delicious home-cooked meal from our local pub, please see their menu and order directly with The Garway Moon.

"A great day's course making a dagger that came out far better than my son and I expected! The workshop/school was well equipped and everything had been made ready (forge fired up, tools on hand, metal cut) for us to start working straight away, after the Health & Safety briefing. With not a moment wasted, our instructor, Will, introduced himself and ran through the basics of what we were to do. He showed us the techniques and approaches, found the best tools for us to use and left us to it at each stage - though he was always on hand in case we needed a bit if help or guidance to make sure things stayed on track. The overall design of the dagger was left up to us and we worked on the metal through the day (with a great lunch delivered by the Garway Moon Inn). Once the metalwork was done we were then shown how to clean the metal up with an angel grinder, how to make the handle on the lathe (with some creative suggestions from Will again) and then some final touches by Will to drill and tap the tang to get the pommel on. Overall, a great experience that will be a fond memory for my teen son and I for years to come. Can't fault the experience in any way. Great place, great atmosphere and incredible value for money. We were blessed to have Will as our instructor, he really knows his crafting and how to give just the right amount of support that adds to the experience. I suspect we'll be going back in the near future!"
