Covid19 update: offering over 100+ courses in Cumbria & the Lakes, we hope to resume all 'in person' courses in late July 2020. During lock down, we've upgraded a listed barn into a beautiful spacious workshop studio, enabling courses to take place with 2m distancing, hand washing and two staircases. It's possible usual catered lunches may not be included for summer courses, depending on circumstances at the time.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Have a go at this age old technique of pewtersmithing and create your own unique designs in a cuttlefish cast.
Ella is an award winning Pewtersmith & will guide you through the process of carving your ideas into the cuttlefish before pouring molten pewter into the mould and finishing your design using metalwork tools.
This time served technique using this unusual material produces fantastic tactile results and is a great way to experience pewter in both a molten and solid form.
Please feel free to bring along any inspiration or designs you may have or Ella will have lots to work from on the day.
Suitable for beginners as well as attendees with previous silver or jewellery making experience
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Welcome drinks : fresh coffee & home made biscuits, a lovely 2 course Aga lunch served in our farmhouse kitchen or outside in the Greystoke Cycle Cafe Tea Garden as soon as it's warm enough. To finish off the day, a freshly made Cream Tea (including Aga-baked scones, cream and jam).
Our days are considered special treats; many come back time and time again and often combine it with a short break to the Lake District.
Materials charge of £15 payable on the day to Ella
We have been hosting and organising 'Quirky Workshops' since 2005 from our friendly family run Cycle Cafe Tea Garden on the northern fringes of the Lake District. All our tutors are carefully hand selected experts and professionals and many considered as leading nationally in their field.
Annie Swarbrick at Quirky Workshops at Greystoke Craft Garden and Barns
Ella is a fantastic teacher. She knows how to set you at your ease, tells you just enough without overwhelming you in details, and then proceeds to check in with everyone individually to make sure you're ok. She makes the whole pewter process seem so easy and highly rewarding. I wouldn't hesitate to book with her again. Quirky Workshops is a great location, too. Annie ensures everyone feels welcome with a generous supply of coffee, tea, home made cordials, and of course biscuits and cake! Such is always the best and Annie is a great host. We've been to a few workshops at Quirky now, and are never disappointed.
Ella is a great teacher, straightforward, enthusiastic and lively. We all got stuck in straight away and surprised ourselves with what and how much we made in a day. There was designing and sawing and soldering and carving and molten pewter all going on at the same time and the atmosphere was friendly and creative. I hope to come back to make more in pewter again soon.
Ella was fabulous - we got going really quickly - as Ella gave really concise teaching points to get us underway guiding us and rescuing the minor mishaps with our work. We produced an array of little objects using variety of techniques which were really pleasing. It was an immensely pleasurable day topped off with a really yummy lunch, plenty of nibbles, drinks and some lovely company. Thank you! We are already looking forward to our next visit.
