Description

If you’ve had a go at a basic bowl and are ready to take your skills further, this two-day bowl course is the perfect next step. In Love Heartwood’s welcoming workshop, you’ll learn to create a range of functional and decorative bowl forms, each designed to teach specific turning and finishing techniques. Working with quality hardwoods such as sycamore, elm and walnut, you’ll complete three bowl projects: Breakfast Bowl 7" (Sycamore) – Learn to mount on a ring plate, shape the bowl, remove the foot, and apply a burnished food safe oil finish. Fruit Bowl (Ash) – Turn a large 10" bowl with a rolled rim and recessed foot, exploring the challenges of larger workpieces. Then achieve a professional, high-gloss finish using shellac and friction polish. Decorative Display Bowl 8" (Cherry or Elm) – Create a deeper, curved-wall bowl using a screw chuck, add decorative beads, shape a pedestal foot, ebonise the surface, and polish with a natural wax finish. Throughout the course, you’ll learn: - Safe and confident use of short and long grind bowl gouges. How to achieve push, pull and shearing cuts. - How to shape and sharpen bowl gouges. - Mounting methods: screw chuck, faceplate, and reverse chucking. - Tool control and forming curves, rims, and feet. - Design principles for balance and aesthetics. - Decorative finishing, including ebonising. - How to make and use your own ebonising solution. You’ll leave with three completed pieces and the confidence to continue exploring bowl turning at home. PLEASE NOTE: This is a 2 day course and the 2nd day may not follow directly on from the 1st. UPCOMING COURSE DATES: November 2025 - 20 and 21st January 2026 - 11th & 12th March 2026 - 18th & 25th May 2026 - 24th & 31st

FAQs

The minimum age for woodturning is typically around 12 years old, as long as the young enthusiast is supervised by an adult. It's a fantastic way to spark creativity and learn new skills! With proper guidance, safety measures, and a passion for crafting, youngsters can enjoy this rewarding craft while creating beautiful pieces. However, I do run special 'Kids and Carers 2 Hour Woodturning Taster Session in Berkshire' through the year where children aged 9+ can attend so please book one of these sessions if you're child is between 9 and 12 years old.
