Ash splint basketry at Greenwood Days

X

Description

Steve Tomlin our Fan Bird and Spoon carving tutor will be sharing his expertise in Ash splint basketry. This is a relatively new craft to the UK. An ash log is pounded to separate the individual growth ring layers which are woven into lightweight, elegant and strong baskets. Traditionally carried out in America, Steve learned to make these baskets with April Stone-Dahl, a native maker from Wisconsin. During the course you’ll learn about pounding, grading and preparing splints learning the skills to weave while creating a practical and beautiful fruit basket. Steve Tomlin has been working professionally with green wood since 2003 and is an internationally respected craftsman with a huge breadth of knowledge and experience, both in making and teaching. He’s been teaching at Greenwood Days for three years and is a great tutor! This is a two day course and no experience is needed and if all goes well you’ll take home a fantastic fruit basket you’ve created. Greenwood Days have been running woodland craft courses since 1998. The course centre is set in a beautiful 90 acre wood in the National Forest on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border.  Our tutors are all highly skilled professional craft workers and teachers who share our passion for preserving, promoting and passing on these crafts and techniques. Come and enjoy the beauty of the woodland, be inspired, be creative, learn a new craft.
