Maker's bio

Hammer and Hound Forge is a traditional blacksmith's workshop in Blyth, Northumberland, Uk owned by award winning blacksmith Alex Sowden, who you might have seen before on Sky Arts' "The Prince's Master Crafters", or BBC1's "Make It At Market". We offer a variety of experiences in metalwork for all skill levels, including tuition in welding and fabrication, forging damascus steel, jewellery techniques and much more! We produce kits of hand forged woodworking supplies, as well as tools for other crafts, though our stock is often forged on commission. We also take on larger work, such as forging gates and railings, overthrows, staircases and all variety of ironwork. If you have any questions for us, please get in touch!

David Pryer reviewed: Blacksmithing Beginners Day

"Had a wonderful day making a knife. Alex was a wonderful teacher and helped out at critical moments during my forging experience. At the end of the day I was able to take home a knife which for all the world looked as if it had been made professionally. Can’t get better than that. "

Allan Davies reviewed: Damascus Steel: Forge your own axe, knife or hammer

"My wife gave me this course as a Christmas present, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and am delighted with my knife. Alex is a very good teacher, concerned to make sure that everyone understands what is going on and is having a good time. He explained things very clearly, and was ready to jump in and help if anyone was getting behind or having trouble, but not taking over to the extent you ever felt it was no longer your piece overall - this is a difficult balance to strike and for me he got it right. Would definitely recommend this course, it's hard work but the results are sooo worth it"
