Wendy Johnson reviewed: Chair making course at Sallerton Wood

"Really enjoyed this course. Andy was supportive, encouraging but helped me when I needed it. I have never done anything like this before but felt empowered and I am extremely proud of my finished chair. The surroundings are beautiful, the whole experience was very positive and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different and creative. It was hard work but I enjoyed every part of the process and it was an experience I will never forget. I met some lovely people and at 67 I achieved something I never thought I could. Thank you Andy you are brilliant at what you do long may it continue. "

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thank you very much indeed, Wendy, for your lovely review. We are really pleased that you enjoyed the course so much, and the environment in which it took place. You and your husband, George, both made wonderful chairs, and we hope that you enjoy using them for many years to come. We'd love to see you back at Sallerton Wood at sometime in the future, for another course, or just for a visit. "

David Sykes reviewed: Pole Lathe Turning at Sallerton Wood

"Another great course at Sallerton Woods. As ever, Andy was superb at explaining the principles and demonstrating the methods - including the 'this is what will happen when you get it wrong!' The Delia Smith of the woodworking world! As part of the course I chose to make a spoon, initially by turning a 'baton' with a sphere, cleaving off half the sphere and then carving out the bowl of the spoon. I hadn't anticipated that the carving would be just as absorbing as the wood turning. Not only is the course good, the surroundings are fantastic, in the heart of a deciduous wood, with sounds of wildlife, and smells of moss, woodsmoke and coffee at refreshment time. A particular thanks for providing the Gluten Free food options Great fun! I will be back. Many thanks."

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thanks very much indeed, David, for being the very first person to review our brand new course in pole lathe turning. Thanks for your kind words too, and for returning to Sallerton Wood for this, your second course. We're delighted that you enjoyed the course and its woodland environment, and we very much look forward to welcoming you back sometime in the future. "

"What an amazing 3 days we had making our stools! In a methodical way, Andy guided us through the process of cleaving the wood, carving and shaping it in order to produce a very treasured and functional stool which we are now proud owners of. Andrew reviewed: Chair making course at Sallerton Wood

"This was an excellent course. The tuition was superb, Andy’s approach was supportive and patient. He effectively combined group demonstrations with one-to-one guidance. As a novice to green woodworking Andy pitched things at a level that he knew was achievable for me but also sufficiently challenging allowing me to create a chair that I feel proud to have made. The drinks and lunch breaks in the woods allowed everyone to get to know each other and fostered a wonderful supportive environment amongst the participants. The woods are beautiful. I chose to ‘wild camp’ on site which again provided the opportunity to chat and get to know other participants giving the course more of a retreat atmosphere."

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thanks, Andrew, for that very positive review of your recent experience at Sallerton Wood. We are very pleased that you enjoyed the course so much, and also appreciated the company of others on the course. Thanks also for commenting on the woodland itself, and the wild camping available there. We hope that you enjoy the chair that you made for many years to come, and we look forward to seeing you again at Sallerton Wood if you choose to visit again. "

Arthur Hocking reviewed: Chair making course at Sallerton Wood

"Just finished the 8 day Large chair making course. Had a great time! Met some lovely people who i really got to know over the 8 days. Was a lovely way to slow down from the crazy pace of modern life. The atmosphere and setting is welcoming to everyone and you are fully submerged in the wilderness. You are shown what is capable to do with a froe, your hands and a little bit of patience. Andy was a brilliant teacher and his wife Jane makes the best home made elderflower cordial! "

Sallerton Wood responded:

Andy is very knowledgeable and skilled in his craft and delivers the course in an engaging and highly patient manner. The venue is a fabulous woodland setting complete with a well equipped and well laid out working area. The site also has a great rest area complete with rocket stoves and clay oven. Nick P reviewed: Make a shave horse at Sallerton Wood

"This course was inspirational, I have been looking forward to it for a long time and I was not disappointed. Andy is a fantastic teacher ensuring that we all acquired the necessary skills in a gentle and positive way, giving enough guidance but not so much that learning opportunities were lost. Even in the rain Sallerton Wood was a dreamy place with Andy's structures blending in perfectly. I now really have the green woodworking bug and am planning my very own bodger's shelter to be followed by a pole lathe. I will be booking an 8 day chair course next as I would love to learn about steam bending"

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thank you very much indeed, Nick, for that kind review; much appreciated. We're delighted that you enjoyed the course so much. Glad to hear that you like the timber-framed structures at Sallerton Wood that have been made for the courses there. We look forward to welcoming you back to Sallerton Wood for a chair-making course. In the meantime, enjoy using the shave horse that you made on the recent course at Sallerton Wood. "
