"Sent my son on this course with his older brother to supervise him. They both had an amazing day and we're really hyped up about it when they came back. Had really positive communication with Alex before my son went on the workshop and also lots of helpful advice for him as he is interested in becoming a blacksmith. I will most definitely be sending him back for more experience.nThank you Alex you are doing an amazing job helping more people get into blacksmithing and creating a lovely experience for those who are interested."

"What an amazing day and awesome experience. I did the axe making public course and it was by far one of the best things I have done in a long time. Alex is so friendly and has a massive amount of knowledge on everything blacksmithing. Was a pleasure to meet and get to know him throughout the day. I would highly recommend going to him for a corse and I will be booking on many more courses with him in the coming year. "

"Had a great day at Hammer and Hound under Alex’s expert guidance. Really enjoyed all aspects of making the knife that I got to take home, and picking up skills and techniques along the way. Nothing was rushed or too much trouble, and whilst we were given the opportunity learn through trial and error, Alex was always ready to step in when help was needed. All in all a fabulous present."

"After having been surprised by my son Gareth at xmas by the gift of making a Demarcus knife I have to give thanks to Alex for which can only be said was a fantastic weekend. Your dedication to making the experience informative, inviting and fun was second to none. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere with plenty of cuppas and biscuits made for a great 2 days. Your knowledge and ability to explain exactly what was needed to achieve the outcome we were hoping for was brilliant. I would definitely recommend Hammer and Hound to anyone who is thinking of partaking in a blacksmiths/forging experience. We will definitely booking again in the future. "

"Alex is a fantastic teacher and blacksmith! The course is set at an excellent pace, but makes you go home feeling that you’ve put in some hard graft! An excellent range of techniques were taught, and Alex is a brilliantly engaging teacher and orator. I left feeling really well informed and interested about blacksmithing; he is the real deal!"

"This was my first experience blacksmithing. Found this local course and it peaked my interest. Thought to myself, sure I can swing a hammer all day at some metal how hard can it be. Turns out I’m stupid and it is incredibly difficult. Difficult and rewarding. Alex shared techniques he’s acquired through years of hard work, learning and dedication. I was really impressed with how patient he was with me, as surprise surprise… I wasn’t an instant savant like I thought I may have been. In all serious though this class was thoroughly enjoyable and interesting, and it’s made me consider furthering my blacksmithing career with other courses Alex offers. "

"Fantastic day, thanks so much to Alex for being a friendly, warm, experienced, and supportive teacher who is able to step back or step forward depending on what you need at any time. Alex really cares about what he does and this is reflected in the course. In the beginners course you make three items which develop skills and push you to different extents as the day goes on with a keen awareness of what's possible and enjoyable in the time available. There is flexibility about what objects you make and flexibility to customise them according to your preference. Really brilliant experience - thanks Alex!"

"The Damascus Steel Knife Forging course I attended this weekend was excellent. Alex is a really accomplished blacksmith and teacher, explaining every step of the process, giving background and historical information. I was extremely pleased with the resulting knife and feel I better understand what is involved in making the knife and will probably attend another course with Alex."

"Fantastic weekend, very happy with the whole experience. Alex knows his trade and is careful to explain every step of the process. Safety first is his first priority. There was 4 of us on the course, myself, Alan, Craig and Martin. We all made slightly different blades and with Alex's help they turned out beautiful. I will definitely be doing another course, probably the Axe making later this year."

"A really enjoyable course, that I highly recommend. Alex is an excellent teacher, highly skilled, friendly and generous. He shows exactly what is needed and explains techniques well. He has a skill in not intervening and helping when not needed but is also very good in assisting when necessary. Participants therefore have possession and pride in their own creations. A useful number of items were made during the day (3 each) and had been selected as examples of the wide range of skills and techniques used. The work was totally absorbing and focussed all one's attention. An excellent antidote to the cares and worries of everyday living both mentally stimulating and therapeutic. You leave with a great sense of achievement and genuine satisfaction. Facilities were good with ample tea/coffee available, toilets and a space to have lunch. Course numbers are small with usually 4/5 members. Safety briefings and care during the day was excellent, with attention to detail that was sensible but not oppressive. I hope to go back, as it was thoroughly enjoyable with good company."

"A great day. I bought this for my husband’s birthday. This what Mike has to say: ‘Alex is a superb teacher. He spent necessary time going through health and safety and then throughout the day he provided us with clear instructions every step of the way. He made the day so fun and enjoyable that it was 5.30pm before we knew it. He has great knowledge and abundant enthusiasm - he loves his job, actually a way of life! We all came away with great memories of the day and 3 useful blacksmithed implements- a door hook, a bottle opener and a fire poker. If life’s stressing you out do this day! You’ll come away de-stressed!"

"I had a brilliant day with Alex on the Blacksmithing Beginners Day. The day started with a nice cup of coffee and introductions from Alex and the other three participants on the course. This was followed by a comprehensive safety brief and explanation of the facilities. The course started with Alex demonstrating step by step what we would be undertaking (which is great to observe a master at his art), followed by us diving in and having a go. We created three objects on the day, starting with basic skills and then culminating into a finely crafted bottle opener (complete with decorative leaf!). Alex demonstrated and explained the steps with great proficiency and clarity, and stepped in to help when required by us. Overall the day was excellent and very enjoyable with Alex being the perfect mentor and host. The other participants on the day were also friendly and welcoming, making it something I would definitely recommend to those who are interested in giving it a go!"

"Excellent day immersed in forging axe head from a billet of steel with Alex. Superb instruction at just the right tempo in a small group of 5. He explained everything (with safety in mind) and was very hands on with us all. Great technical knowledge throughout the process of raw steel, to finished axe to take home. Thoroughly enjoyed and would like to come back to make a Damascus steel knife. Well worth travelling to, you won't be disappointed. In a word 'elemental'."

"An incredible experience with Hound and Hammer. The forging day with Hound and Hammer was absolutely fantastic. James was brilliant with my 13-year-old son—he struck the perfect balance between instruction and letting him get hands-on, explore, and be creative. The day was packed with new skills and techniques that you simply don’t come across every day, keeping him fully engaged from start to finish. It was a mixed-age group, which added a great dynamic. Since my son was too young to attend alone, I stayed to observe and really enjoyed watching the group share ideas and support each other. It made the experience even richer. I would highly recommend a forging course to anyone looking to try something unique and rewarding. It made for a fantastic Christmas present, and my son has already asked when he can go again!"

"Really enjoyable course, Alex is an excellent teacher, and really encouraged and supported the group to make some really interesting, unique and useful knives. I now have a kitchen knife that I'm both proud of and has a story behind it."
