About the Course
Zoe Gertner specialises in teaching woodcarving, her woodcarving courses being for people of any age from 8 years upwards and from all walks of life. Many retired people have found wood carving and sculpture to be a new and absorbing leisure activity, as have wood turners, craftworkers and those from medical and educational professions. Zoe is a fully qualified teacher who studied anatomy and kinesiology as part of her Honours degree.
All types of carving skills are taught, including carving in relief or in the round, creative sculpture, lettering, utilitarian items such as signboards or decoration and carving detail on furniture and boxes. This flexible approach enables Zoe to tailor her teaching to the requirements of each individual student during his/her wood carving instruction.
For complete beginners and those who have not handled wood working tools before, please get in touch to arrange convenient dates.
A session may have a mixture of newcomers and those who have attended previously; and complete beginners are especially welcomed, as are the retired and those who feel they have no artistic ability. Although for many, the relaxed atmosphere of a woodcarving class provides both "Leisure and Pleasure," several students have won awards in national and regional competitions, and others have acquired a pleasurable hobby in their retirement. Children are also welcome but must be over 8 years old and accompanied by a family adult participating at the same time.
Former students are very welcome to return during the days that suit them, space permitting, or at any other mutually convenient times. We can usually arrange accommodation for students in the Farmhouse or close by, and well behaved pets/non participating partners are also welcome to stay.
A professional woodcarver since 1980, Zoe is experienced in all aspects of wood carving, and her carvings can be found in Somerset churches as well as in private collections all over the world. She has contributed to both 'Traditional Woodworking' magazine and 'Woodcarving' magazine as well as its two books of articles 'The Woodcarvers' and 'Wood Carving for Beginners' published by GMC Publications. Her book 'Woodcarving - A Foundation Course' covers everything a beginner needs to know.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
