Wonderful World of Willow Workshop // Gweithdy Byd Rhyfeddol Helyg
Description
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Join us for a friendly, informative, and practical introduction to the world of willow at the CoedUNO site in Tegryn. This hands-on workshop combines traditional woodland knowledge with practical skills, offering a rich overview of how willow is grown, managed, and used. Led by experienced tutor Cassandra Lishman, the session begins with a theory-based introduction to willow as a renewable natural resource. This will cover how willow is grown and established, an overview of varieties, and the principles of long-term management. You’ll learn when and why coppicing is carried out, alongside essential maintenance considerations, providing a strong foundation before moving into practical work. We will then physically coppice willow as a group on the CoedUNO site, working together in the established willow plots. During this practical session, you will learn how to: - Coppice willow safely and effectively - Grade willow once harvested - Make white willow The course will also include an introduction to the many ways willow can be used after harvesting, including re-planting cuttings, weaving, garden structures, and other common traditional and contemporary uses. Participants will take home some willow cuttings of their own, ready to use for re-planting or future craft projects, and a deeper understanding of how to work with this versatile and sustainable material. This course is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in sustainable growing, woodland crafts, and natural materials. No prior experience is necessary.
