Upholstery Weekend 'Bring Your Own Project' Day

X

Description

Bring your own upholstery project. An ideal class for beginners or improvers. This is a one day session suitable for either a small project such as a footstool or dining chair - or for a larger project, when combined another weekend class or the weekly Friday Classes. (Friday classes are bookable under a separate listing). Weekend classes run at least once a month and are 'hop on' and 'off' as you need. Check the calendar for available dates. Class sizes: a maximum of 3 students per session, so you will get plenty of guidance. Learn new skills and techniques to achieve more professional results. Projects: this is determined by your choice of chair and what the project needs. Traditional & modern methods are both taught - traditional methods are more time consuming. You can recover your furniture, which entails taking off the top fabric only. This option is faster but requires a sound base of stuffings. Or you can re-upholster, this involves ripping off all layers until you get to the bare frame and rebuilding it from there. This option takes twice as long but is a fascinating process. An ideal beginners project for one day would be a footstool, drop in dining chair pads or simple covered dining chair. If you are unsure please get in touch. As a guide, a modern footstool (stuffed with foam) can be completed in a day, a traditionally stuffed footstool (using coconut fibre stuffing instead of foam) will take 2 days to complete. A wing back chair can take 8 sessions or more to completely re-upholster from the frame up. Upon booking, Katie will request that you email a photo of your project. Just to check that it is a suitable piece; all chairs are different. Your wooden frame should be sound and not require repair. Tuition: traditional or modern techniques taught, full re-upholstery or recovering using demonstrations and one-to-one work with Katie. Preparation: you will need to bring along a chair or frame and supply top cover fabric. It is strongly recommended that you remove the old covers and spent stuffings prior to the class to save time on the day. You can remove them in the studio and receive tuition upon how to do so, but I have found that most attendees prefer to spend their workshop time on learning upholstery techniques and restoring their piece of furniture to its former glory. Tool hire and sundries included. Additional materials are available to purchase. Upholstery is a fascinating craft which takes years to fully master, so day classes are a great way to delve further into the skills and techniques and to develop confidence. Tutor: Katie is an experienced furniture restorer, upholsterer and teacher with over 10 years experience teaching craft skills. After completing the City & Guilds Diplomas in Traditional Furniture Making and Upholstery she qualified as a City & Guilds Trainer/Assessor and taught at a City & Guilds training centre in Bristol. She is also a qualified design and technology teacher with a degree in the History of Art and Design. Venue & facilities: meticulous' studio is located in the Courtyard at the historic, Bishton Hall, a stunning Georgian mansion and grounds in the Staffordshire countryside. The Courtyard is home to a number of independent businesses and Sparrow's Tearoom, where course attendees enjoy a 10% discount. The Tearoom serves homemade food and cakes daily, in the former chapel. The grounds are also free to enter. You are also welcome to bring or buy your own lunch to eat either within the workshop or the Courtyard. Tea and coffee is supplied.

What's included in the price?

Tuition, loan of tools and equipment, (sundries e.g. staples, glue and tacks) and refreshments - tea, coffee and lots of biscuits! Materials required for renovation are available to purchase, for example: webbing, hessian, waddings, and a small range of foam blocks suitable for common projects. You are also welcome to buy them online/bring your own. Top cover fabric is to be supplied by the learner - although Katie often has spare materials from past projects she can provide if requested before the course.
