Welcome to my online 'Watercolour for Beginners' video course.
As a professional artist and tutor I know how important key art skills are. This course is designed to take you from the basics and on through the key skills needed to begin painting in watercolours.
The course is divided into 5 lessons and designed for the complete beginner to those with more experience who want a refresher in the core skills of watercolour painting.
As a tutor with 20 years’ experience I love introducing students to a new medium. But I also know the benefits of a refresher course for experienced watercolourists. It’s always useful to go back to the beginning to understand why and how techniques work.
Is this course for me?
Do you want to work step by step from the beginning? Understanding the equipment needed for watercolour painting, work through core skills like; paint consistency, wet on wet washes and glazing? Do you want to work on a series of simple paintings that build on these core skills? Then yes this is for you.
The course assumes you have no prior knowledge and presents each piece of information or skill in manageable lessons. Allowing you to work through at your own pace, completing each lesson and building on the previous lessons skills.
How long does the course take to complete?
There are over 3 hours of video, which can be watched and worked through in one day if you are in a rush. But I suggest you take one lesson at a time, gaining the skills and techniques in each lesson before moving on. The course is designed around my popular 5 week watercolour for beginner’s studio course so is broken down into 5 lessons for you to work through.
(This course gives you 24 hour access to the course materials for 4 months)
You will be sent an email with login details and a link to the course.
Lesson 1 – Getting started. This covers all the equipment you need, basic mark making and paint consistency.
Lesson 2 – Key skills. This shows you how to lay down different washes and encourages you to use primary colours in mixes to create a colour wheel.
Lesson 3 – Primary colour mixes. This lesson works through the previous skills learnt to show you how to paint a still life of fruit.
Lesson 4 – Landscape painting. Here you will use glazing to paint a lovely country scene.
Lesson 5 – For fun! This is all about having fun and focusing on effects. There’s also a creative painting of sea and moon using different effects.
Everything you need to set you on the road to creating your own wonderful watercolours!
And don't forget you will have access to my Student Chatroom and dedicated area to post your work and get feedback.
To start the course you only need a means of watching each of the video lessons online. You will also need to register with my Student Chatroom, where you will be given access to the course. You will be sent an email with login details and links.
In lesson 1 I talk you thorough all the equipment you will need to get started with watercolours. As a basic guide all you really need is a watercolour paper pad, 2 brushes and 3 tubes of watercolour paint. If you are completely new to watercolour painting then I suggest you watch the first video in lesson 1 before buying your equipment.

I was given a gift card for Xmas and chose Tricia’s online watercolours for beginners. I enjoyed all the videos and Tricia presented at a very good pace with easy to follow instructions. The projects were set at the right level of difficulty for beginners. The feedback and sharing on the student chatroom was very beneficial with good feedback and constructive ways in how to improve your work. I would recommend this course for anyone who wants to take up watercolour painting or even refresh ones memory on techniques.
Response from Art with Tricia:
I really appreciate the feedback and it's always good to know the course is pitched to the right level for students.Beautiful model and plenty of instructions from Tricia. Made unpleasant by the necessity of having to wear masks all day. Shame the November session has been cancelled, but looking forward to February 2021!
Response from Art with Tricia:
Thanks for your feedback. This was the first of Tricia's classes that I attended. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. The morning session was quite intense but after the initial warm up sketches, I felt that we had sufficient time to complete more complete drawings. The model, Katie, was fabulous and a perfect subject. Tricia was very helpful to everyone and provided just the right amount of support when needed. I thought I would be inexperienced compared to the other attendees, but this was a very mixed group and everyone was welcoming. The afternoon session was interesting with the opportunity to try two types of printing. Time didn't permit us to try both, but it would be nice to have a go at the second option on another occasion. I look forward to attending future workshop and will be checking Tricia's website for other art classes that I may be able to attend on a more regular basis.
Response from Art with Tricia:
I'm so glad you enjoyed your first session. You are right the group is quite a mix of different abilities and I hope I can make everyone feel part of the group by spending more time with newer students and pushing those with more experience to challenge themselves.I really enjoyed this course. We had a very natural model and the afternoon was fun. I learnt a new hobby with the lino cutting. Tricia is a very patient and kind teacher who is willing to show you how to put things right when you go wrong. I will certainly be looking out for other courses
Response from Art with Tricia:
Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed the session and in the afternoon got a taste of a new medium, with the lino cutting!7 December 2019 Life Drawing: The model was absolutely lovely and had some wonderfully graceful poses. The afternoon was enjoyable learning a new art technique and made a good change of pace from the morning as Life drawing is quite an intense day. I find that I could do with a couple of extra breaks in the day when just life drawing.
Response from Art with Tricia:
I'm glad you enjoyed sketching our new model and I'm sure she will be back next year. The afternoon printing was a nice change and everyone produced some great work.Tricia is a wonderful, patient tutor (and I'm not just saying that because she brings cakes!), who guides us through her courses based on our individual strengths and weaknesses. I have attended several of her classes and always feel there is something fun, new and interesting to learn.
A very different and challenging life course with the musicians expertly playing a wide range of music while posing in natural playing stances.
A clothed life class is new to me but the music evoked a new style to my art.
Tricia was continually behind the scenes dropping words of advice or approval as she observed our efforts.
It was hard work but very enjoyable.
I hope Tricia will bring them together again for us.
Response from Art with Tricia:
Thank you for your support over the past few years, I'm glad to see you are still enjoying coming to Life Drawing each session and are being 'challenged' by the different themes each workshop.Have been to several of the Life Drawing workshops before and always enjoyed them. This one with musicians was a bit different and quite a challenge as they were clothed and constantly moving! A nice relaxed atmosphere, helpful encouragement and words of advice from Tricia and the music was great. I'd love to have another go at this.
Response from Art with Tricia:
Many thanks for your positive feedback and continued support of the Life Drawing workshops throughout the year.Always fun, Tricia is a friendly and helpful tutor, who is happy to share her knowledge.
Each workshop sets a new challenge, offering lots of opportunities to push myself and practise my drawing skills.
Response from Art with Tricia:
Claire, thank you.Interesting and challenging days - especially enjoy the slightly longer poses.
Response from Art with Tricia:
Kate thank you so much.
