Weekend Pottery Throwing Course - learn the potters wheel

X

Description

Learn how to craft pots on the potters wheel. The weekend pottery throwing course is suitable for beginners and improvers alike. On the first day we start with the foundations of any pot. You'll learn how to cone and centre, pull up the walls and and shape clay. Guided step-by-step through the process we start with cylinders (cups), next moving onto making bowls before lunch. In the afternoon you’ll learn how to form the clay to make different shapes including jugs with spouts. You’ll be encouraged to work at your own pace, practicing to create your perfect pots! Day two: your pots will be dry and ready to tidy up. Learn how to trim and turn foot rings and refine the shape of your pots. You'll be amazed how this can transform a pot. There will be the opportunity to throw a few more pieces too. At the end of the weekend you’ll have made all sorts of pots - tall ones, straight ones, curved ones and wonky ones! Choose your top three to be glazed in a colour of your choice and fired. Each class has just seven students which means you’ll get enough individual support through the day. With your own professional potters wheel at your hands there will be lots of time to practice. Building on the fundamentals and progressing quickly, you will learn a lot and feel a real sense of achievement by the end of the course. What’s more, you’ll have some of your own handcrafted ceramics to treasure. Your pieces will be ready for collection 6-8 weeks later (or delivery for P&P costs). Each day runs from 10am to 4pm with a break for lunch (not included).

FAQs

My classes are suitable for absolute beginners and anyone aged from 18 to 98! You will be guided through the making process step by step. Groups are small so you will get some one to one tution.

If coming for the day/weekend please bring a packed lunch. Tea, fresh coffee and locally made cake will be served at breaks. Dress for mess and comfort! Bring an apron and hand towel (or you can hire them). Flat shoes with closed toes recommended. Short nails are also advisable, and long hair needs to be tied back.

Using a pottery wheel can be more physical than you imagine. You will be sitting and need to bend at the hips and lean forward. You will be using both arms and hands to shape the clay. While you don't need to be strong, it does require some effort to learn anything new with the body and you will sleep well after the first day! If you have any questions about accessability please get in touch.

Moon Studio Ceramics is in a converted barn. It's located on an old farm in a quiet rural setting. Perfect to enjoy some creative time in! There is free parking on site. The nearest train stations are Christchurch (10mins drive) and Hinton Admiral (5mins drive). It is on National Cycle Route 2.

Changes to reservations can be made up to 30 days before your class, please email your request. If there are less than 30 days to your class then your reservation is non transferable. If you cannot make it you are welcome to give your place to a friend/family member. I strongly advise participants purchase a cancellation insurance to cover any loss you may incur if you have to pull out of your booking last minute due to unforseen circumstances.
