David Richardson is the tutor for Adult Education courses specialising in making and decorating pottery by hand, throwing on the wheel and using moulds for pressing and slip casting. An introduction to the slip casting process works well for both beginners & intermediate students. This course illustrates the crossover between craft & industrial techniques and is ideal for the contemporary learner and studio potter.
What's included in the price?
All materials and firings are included within the course fee. There will be plaster of Paris moulds and liquid clay slip supplied as part of the course fee, plus a choice of 17 different decorating slips and Contem liquid underglaze colours. A white earthenware body will be available for throwing, hand building and press moulding. Colours will maintain their vibrancy after glazing with both gloss and matt transparent finish options available. David has over 40 years of experience in studio pottery. He teaches casting, throwing, press moulding and hand building. Plus combinations of all these techniques to establish each learner’s personal goal. Surface & relief decoration can be applied to mugs, jugs, cups & saucers, plates, vases, storage jars & sculptures. David will teach: - Beginners throwing techniques on the wheel. - Press moulding. - Slab building - Coiling - Slip Casting. A range of plaster moulds will be provided liquid clay casting slip, is poured into plaster of Paris moulds which draw water out of the liquid clay body to leave a “skin” of clay lining the inside of the mould. You will be taught the basic timings, how to trim, sponge and fettle the cast items. Decorating by using sgraffito, banding, painting, stencilling, sponging, wax erosion & tissue print application. Learners will start using these techniques from the outset and will be encouraged to explore their development in week by week progress.
