Description
Join us for a unique, hands-on experience working with a fascinating material in our Hove studio! Melt and recycle waste LDPE plastic (low-density polyethylene), marble your own colours, and create something to take home with you. As well as being a practical day, you’ll also learn how we've merged traditional crafts with modern materials, and what sustainable design and materials actually mean. What you make on the day is up to you: you could make a set of coasters, a vase, a board, a piece of art for your wall, a candle holder, or even a sculpture! We want this fun and practical day to inspire you to see waste as a raw material, and to think creatively about its possibilities. We’re so excited to meet some like-minded people who want to engage with solutions to some messy waste problems. We hope you can join us!

Maker
We are Louise and Merl, Swedish sisters who have lived in the UK since we were little. We’ve always loved making things, and from a young age were taught to be resourceful, and to love and respect our environment. By transferring skills learned from woodworking and other traditional crafts, we've developed many ways to hand-work recycled LDPE plastic, crafting marbled homewares and furniture with great care.

FAQs
Choose from a variety of homeware items to make and take home! A set of 8 coasters, a vase or candle holder, decorative board, irregular shaped blobby board, or 2 small trinket trays. Alternatively if you have any ideas which you'd like to run by us before the workshop, email your suggestions and we'll see if it's possible!
The day starts at 10am with a meet and greet, and an informal talk with videos and Q&A, and then a kneading and cutting demonstration for you to get a feel for working with the plastic.
After this, it’s time to choose the colours of recycled plastic that you’ll use to make your piece/s; we have prepared LDPE discs in a wide variety of colours, so there is plenty of choice! Once decided, we’ll take a 40 minute lunchbreak at around 12.30pm to give your plastic a chance to melt in our workshop ovens.
After lunch the plastic has melted, and we’ll begin exploring layering and marbling techniques. This process takes around 2 hours. When you’re happy with how the marbling looks within your plastic, we’ll either press your pieces or hand-shape them depending on the product type you are making. There’ll also be a carving demonstration for anyone who has hand-shaped their piece.
When we’re all done (4-5pm depending on group size), if anyone wants to stick around for a chat, we’ll have various drink options waiting in the fridge, and we can raise a glass to all your hard work and wonderful creations!
Please note: if you would like to take home your piece/s on the day, the products will have the natural edge from pressing or hand-shaping, as we do not have time to cut and sand the products straight after the workshop. Alternatively, we can cut & sand or carve your homeware pieces for an additional fee payable on the day.
All materials and personal protective equipment will be provided, so just wear practical warm clothing and footwear (in the colder months) that you wouldn’t mind getting dirty, just in case.
We will run through the health and safety of each process before doing it to avoid accidents, and we will only let you do things that you are capable of doing. Anything you’re unable to do, we’ll do for you!
You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.
We have some limited parking available in our mews - please email us before booking if parking is crucial! Alternatively there are excellent transport links just a one minute walk from our workshop.
Tea, coffee and water will be provided throughout the day, as well as some homemade snacks (vegan and gluten free) to keep you going through the afternoon.
There will be a 40 minute lunch break at around 12.30pm. We have a microwave and sofas if you want to bring lunch with you, alternatively there are some fab cafés just down the road, as well as supermarkets and other food shops on Western Road (1 minute walk).
