If you do Turn, if you don't turn, but would like to have ago or improve; then Philip's day will cater for all. It is an amazing day which ends too quickly. Philip's teaching is at your pace its a hands on instruction and teaching as opposed to a demonstration. A safety first, patient and calming style which will make anyone feel at ease and relaxed. I waited 16 months to visit his workshop for a 1 to 1 day. The day is full of inspiration and great ideas, you will take endless pictures of these to implement in your own space. The tool maintenance and sharpening changed my turning immediately, right tools for the right job. The correct handling takes away any fear or danger, I have undoubtedly put my self in previously. A fantastic day, great Hosts, I will return, keep up the great work Phillip, thanks for the tea Sue, my wife loved your glass work, PS a lovely shop too !! see you both again soon
A thoroughly enjoyable day with Phil. I learned a lot and came away with the confidence to progress at my own rate.
Phil's Woodturning book (included in cost of course) is a mine of straight forward, easy to read information.
For anyone looking to take up this hobby, I cannot recommend this course enough.
Philip is an outstanding craftsman and teacher. I was a little concerned that I might have problems doing this via Zoom but he has the visual equipment to demonstrate what he is doing and takes time to make sure you follow him properly. The two hours I spent with him just vanished and I came away more confident and with the information that I need to go ahead. I would love do visit his workshop and do stuff alongside him to improve further but in the meantime will go away, practice and then come back for follow up zoom sessions as my skills develop. Highly recommended.
Response from Philip Greenwood:
Thank you Malcolm.Great day with a very likeable and knowledgable chap. The day was well structured and ran smoothly learnt loads of tricks of the trade and would highly recommend this course.
I recently attended a 2 day course with Philip really enjoyable and very informative. I am a complete beginner and have come home full of enthusiasm ready to plan my workshop and purchase a lathe etc.
Both Philip and his wife Wendy provide a very friendly relaxed atmosphere. I have learned so much including practical work on the lathe, and would recommend anyone wishing to learn or improve their skills to attend one of these courses with Philip.

Great course. Phil has a confident and professional approach to his work and is more than happy to impart his extensive knowledge and skills.
The day is well structured and relaxed, giving me the chance to develop my skills at a pace suiting my ability.
The experience has whetted my appetite for wood turning and I fully intend to develop this as a hobby.
Thank you for a fantastic day that proved to be great value.

As this was a “one on one” day , Philip was able to tailor my needs exactly and I certainly learnt a great deal and picked up many tips which will be most useful - a very worthwhile day.
I had an absolutely wonderful day with Phil making two children's rattles. Phil and his wife could not have been more friendly and welcoming, and Phil did everything he could possible do to make sure I got the most from the day. Thoroughly recommended
I had a lovely day learning woodturning with Phillip. He is very thorough in teaching best practice for tools, safety and setup and gave me an excellent grounding in woodturning as a complete beginner. I made a beautiful sycamore bowl and look forward to doing more in the future
Just spent two days with Philip. His knowledge and his informal approach made the course excellent. I came away with a better understanding of what I need and where I was making mistakes. His sensible approach to H&S was informative and not over the top. I also gained a few tips for saving money.
I would certainly recommend his courses to anyone, either a beginner or someone wanting to gain more knowledge. The welcoming from his partner and Philip was second to none. Thanks for making the 2 days an excellent experience. Rick.
An excellent day!! Philip was very knowledgeable and what we thought may be a hard day when turning your hand to something new was extremely enjoyable and rewarding. We were able to choose our own design for our bowls and were expertly guided throughout with lots of advice and top tips. We would definitely recommend this 1 day introductory course. A big thank you to Philip!
I have just had a great day with Phil and can highly recommend. A patient and safety conscious teacher who lets you get involved straight away. I left with a finished bowl and a head full of great metaphors to help me remember key techniques. Very friendly and welcoming. I can highly recommend as a gift for anyone or for those who want to learn / brush up on wood turning.
I have always want to try my hand at wood turning, but never had a true understanding of where to begin and what is involved. I have just spent a great day with Philip and have left having completed my first turned bowl. Philip has a way of explaining things in such a way that an absolute novice has the confidence to use the equipment without fear, but with a sensible respect for what is involved. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone interested in trying this new skill.
Great course Philip, thank you for your patience and expertise.
Had a great day with Phil. Last time I used a lathe was 45 years ago and I wanted to understand what would be involved in starting up as a hobby so beside the expert tuition on turning the other advice about the equipment, safety, tool maintenance and tricks/tips was absolutely great. He is patient, knowledgeable and no question is too silly so thank you Phil for helping me decide I definitely want to take this further.
What a great day doing wood turning with Philip, the tuition was second to none he takes his time to explain, then shows you then, let’s you do it, then tells you how you are doing. The best thing was his knowledge of the equipment all the pros and cons what’s best for you. He listens to what you want out of the couse then works around you all the time explaining things at your level. You do have a laugh and a joke which does put you at ease. Overall a fantastic course for young and like me 65yrs never to old to learn. Would recommend this course run by philip to anybody wishing to take up a new hobby. Philip great to meet you and I am looking forward to putting all I learnt in to practice and enjoying my time I my Man Cave in France.
What an amazing experience. Two days of laughs and fun and wood. Phil is a great teacher, allowing you to work at your own speed. Avengers nev picked up a wood turning chisel I felt very confident after just a short time getting stuck into my first ever bowl. Both Phil and his partner make you feel at home with a steady supply of tea and a wonderful local lunch.. by day two I was totally hooked and wanting to get my first lathe. This course is a must for beginners and experienced wood turners alike Phil knowledge is exceptional.. well worth completing.
We both bought each other (un-be known) a day wood turning course with Phillip Greenwood in Hetton le hole.
Arrived at his workshop in the centre of the village 10 mins early and parked up outside in a small car park. We both ventured a little bit apprehensive and was greeted by Wendy and Phillip. After a cup of tea we doned our coveralls and after explanations of lathe, tools and wood and safety aspects, we choose our wood to work on. Both being a bit competitive with each other, we decide to turn a bowl each. Neither of us had never done anything like this before but Phillip explained everything and was very informative throughout the day. As we had set off at 07.00ish that morning we were hungry, so by lunchtime a smashing sandwich and garnish turned up. YUM. After lunch we went back into the studio to finish our bowls. Due to us asking so many questions and having a really good time we unfortunately didn't get to turn a candlestick, We both turned a beautiful bowl each, the smooth and rich colour and tactile feel of them we couldn't wait to show the family at lunch the next day. We came away with a big smile, learnt something and product that we will cherish and use in our home.
A big thank you to Phillip and not forgetting Wendy for the refreshments.
Just finished a course with philip and it was excellent. Could not have asked for better tuition and still had a laugh. I would highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn or improve woodturning.
I recently did a wood turning course with Philip Greenwood. I enjoyed the my day tremendously. Philip is a brilliant teacher, he made the day fun and informative and his ability to simplify the process put me at my ease. Wendy provided copious cups of coffee as well as a tasty lunch. I can highly recommend Philip and his courses and look forward to attended another in the near future. It was a lovely way to spend a day. Oh, and I got to make and take home a very impressive wooden bowl. Result!
This was a brilliant course. Phil is an excellent teacher and both him and his wife Wendy made me feel relaxed and welcome from the moment I walked through their door. I had no previous experience on using a lathe but after only a short time I was carving away under guided supervision. I made a bowl which I am very proud of and feel confident enough to try and make another at home. I gained an understanding of lathes, the tools needed and how they work what types of wood to use to start with and why.
Just spending time with such a great craftsman is inspirational.
I thoroughly recommend this course to anyone wanting to try their hand at wood turning. even the setting is idyllic
Having spent the last year trying to self-learn wood turning, I became frustrated by not being able to achieve the quality of output I wanted. I contacted Philip, explained the problem and asked if he could help. After our telephone call I booked a one-to-one instruction day. Philip soon identified the weaknesses in my methods (too numerous to list) and set about correcting them. The session also went well beyond correcting working methods and included background topics such as wood types, wood and tool selection, use of jigs and tool sharpening, as well as lots of guided practice on the lathe. By the end of the day's programme, I was extremely happy to know what not to do, and to be able to start practicing the right techniques for the right reasons. Already, I have seen a step change in the quality of my wood turning results. Philip's understated breadth of knowledge, expertise and high level of patience was a joy to experience. Throughout the day he adapted the content to fit my needs and as a result he far exceeded my expectations. Philip and Wendy run professional and friendly operation in a beautiful part of the country and they looked after me like I was a family friend. I cannot thank them enough and have no hesitation in recommending Philip's instructional offerings unequivocally.
I had a hankering to try wood turning and needed as much info as I could get before committing any money. Philip gave me practical experience of basic techniques, a list of dos and don't, types of lathes to consider, which tools to use, safety requirements, filtration problems and solutions and a range of prices from basic to, well, definitely not so basic! All in all an excellent course if you are thinking of starting wood turning. The course was geared to me and what I could do which I found very helpful and it made the whole experience extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended.
Philip and his surroundings were very good, he and his wife made me feel at home and we quickly got chatting about what I wanted to get from the course. Phillip was very accommodating and allowed me to explore the skills needed to work on at my speed and for me to jump between subjects. It was a good balance between actual practical wood turning and theory.
Booked a 2 day course with Phil and I would agree with every thing said about him above, shows you then lets you get on with it in your own time but keeping an eye on you all the while, skillful, knowledgeable, and also you do not need to spend a lot of money on fancy tools you don`t need.
Thanks to Wendy for keeping me fed and watered.
Many thanks Phil and Wendy
I had a very informative, hands-on and informative day with Philip yesterday. I have never even attempted to turn wood before, had only ever seen it done at woodworking shows. Philip took me through everything I need to know from safety, tool requirements and basic setup, through to all the basic techniques to get started turning bowls and spindles. I got everything I needed out of the day and the value for money is great. The location of the workshop is superb and thanks to Philips wife Wendy for providing refreshments throughout the day. I now need to acquire all the various tools and machinery before I can start turning on my own but I am confident that I could start practising the techniques shown and before long be producing turned items to a good standard. Thank you Philip and Wendy, all the best.
I have just returned from 2 days of wood turning with Philip, and cannot believe how much I have learnt. Although I had undertaken some woodturning, my experience was limited and my confidence was low. Philips' calm and patient manner helped to put me at my ease, and the knowledge and little tricks of the trade he passed on were fantastic.
I have come away just itching to get back on my lathe and reproduce the beautiful bowl that I managed to create under his expert guidance. He has also given me the confidence to sharpen my own tools, something that I was woefully bad at, but now feel that I can achieve :).
I have thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, and will be back in the not too distant future to get more insights and skills from him.
Very knowledgeable instructor and excellent tuition. Gave good advice on choosing equipment & setting up workshop. Thank you Wendy for lunch & refreshments, really enjoyed them. Great day all round
It was the first time I had tried my hand at wood turning, Philip is an excellent instructor, detailed but did not over complicate the whole process. Would recommend my friends.
I contacted Phil with a specific interest in turning my own fishing floats. From my first enquiry to the day I arrived Phil was very helpful. A great warm greeting on the day I arrived. Nice grub at lunchtime and great support from his wife. The day was fantastic and exceeded my expectations. Lots of advice and support throughout the day. Nothing is rushed and he is so easy to get on with. my advice don't think about it just book it!! And on my first day out using a float he helped me with 19 trout, 15 Grayling and a chub! Hows that for a positive review Phil cheers Mate!!!!!!!
What an amazing day! Phil is a great tutor, everything was explained clearly and easily which really gave me and my father confidence. Nothing was rushed and the advice just kept coming. I would really recommend a day with Phil to anyone regardless of their experience, he is a fountain of knowledge. Me and my father can't thank Phil and his family enough for a really great day!
I spent a day with Philip doing woodturning, something I had not done for about twenty years. He (and his partner) was very welcoming (providing endless coffee and a local lunch), supportive and very skilled. He allowed me to decide what to work on, how to approach it and to work at my own speed and level of competence. I felt considerably more knowledgeable and competent than when I arrived, and encouraged to work more on my own. I would highly recommend him for both his skills, his care (including thinking about safety issues) and his generally encouraging way of working with people at a pace and level appropriate to their needs.
