About the Course
We will have a fun day using mosaic to cover plants pots and this course is suitable for beginners.
With a great choice of recycled tesserae and lots of ideas for designs available, you can create some great works of art to take home.
You will learn about mosaic techniques, materials, safety, identifying future projects and the design process.
The workshop will take place in my house next to the sea in Birsay, next to the Brough of Birsay, an ancient Viking settlement. I also have a comfortable double/twin room to let if needed, please enquire for availability.
The workshop is intended for you to pick up the basics about mosaic and have the confidence to continue further projects of your own later.
You should have time to make 2/3 mosaic pots and you will be given instructions and a bag of grout to take home with you to finish later. Please bring a notebook and pen.
It will be a relaxed day with support given to the creative process throughout, although I do encourage your own input and ideas for projects. There are books available on the day to inspire design ideas and tea, coffee and light lunch will be provided throughout.
I encourage everyone to have a look around and bring any bits and pieces that you may wish to add to your artwork, beads, old china, shells, jewellery, etc. Although a good selection of materials will be provided.
As you will need to carry your pieces home safely afterwards, can you bring a basket or a firm box to place them in and a piece of cloth to secure them from moving about.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All tools and materials will be provided on the day, for more detail see above. Please bring a notebook and pen.
Drinks will be provided and a light lunch.
I spent 3 wonderful days in Catherine's Airbnb room which was lovely, spacious, light, beautifully clean and inviting. Catherine did a wonderful job as my tour guide; we travelled all over the islands and took in all the sights. I also spent two days on two of Catherine's mosaic courses which were both thoroughly enjoyable. Day One I completed a terracotta pot and on Day Two I completed two necklaces with shells and crockery etc found on the beach nearby, and left with materials for a third. Thank you Caroline for your hospitality, patience and instruction and for giving me the total Orkney experience. I can't wait to come back for another visit.

Wish I'd picked a more simple design, but I learned a lot in this workshop.

A thoroughly enjoyable day with a mosaic plant pot nearly finished at the end of it. Luckily you get a goody bag to take home to finish it off. Catherine's advice, tips and help was spot on.

Response from More Mosaics:It was great to have you, and you have done a wonderful job with the grouting!
What a great way to spend a day. Our host, Catherine was patient and encouraging in equal measure, she allowed us to explore our ideas and helped develop them into wonderful finished items that at the start of the day I would not have thought I was capable of producing.
I would recommend to anybody of any age or skill level, experience is not required. Interesting topical chat and plenty of tea on tap all held in a wonderful old mill.

Very enjoyable day ..where did the time go ? We got totally absorbed in the creative process. Catherine is a very artistic lady and enabled me , a talentless individual, to create some spectacular pieces that I am very proud of .

I had a great day! Just the right balance of structure, inspiration, teaching, advice and freedom to be individual and creative. Excellent, thanks.
