I had been dabbling in leather work for about a year, trying to teach myself from the internet, but wasn’t really getting anywhere. I decided to book a day with Nigel, primarily to learn the skills to copy an old belt I had, but also to gain some more general knowledge. Nigel showed me some belts he had made and they were of so much higher quality than the one I had that I decided to ask Nigel to just show me how to do the job properly.
I would never have imagined how much thought, choice and detail goes in to every step of making a belt, nor the level of precision to strive for. We made some templates and made good progress on a belt which we designed together (there was never any intention to finish the belt).
I then spent some time asking Nigel’s thoughts on leather types, tools, materials, suppliers etc. He seems to know everything (!) and provided masses of information.
Overall I had a thoroughly enjoyable day and went home feeling inspired. Nigel is a likeable chap and seems to love teaching. I gained more knowledge and information in one day than I would have thought possible and would recommend the course without hesitation.
I booked a one on one with Nigel to learn the basics of making a leather sheath. I came away with lots of new skills and had a great day. Will definitely be booking a second day soon.
Nigel is a great teacher and his new workshop is to die for.
Yesterday I had my third lesson with Nigel and came away with new skills and growing enthusiasm for the craft. Nigel is an excellent teacher and a great communicator, taking time to explain the theoretical and mechanical underpinnings of the work so that the understanding needed to tackle a new project is in place... this is not rote learning, but laying foundations for creativity and adventure! We worked on 'upping' my stitching by exploring some different irons and weight and type of threads. We made a brief sally into stitching with and awl...(I think I'll stick to stitching irons where ever possible!) We then went on to make a belt from pattern to finish! A great day!
Just finished a weeks course with Nigel. I thoroughly enjoyed it .
Nigel is a great teacher and he has conveyed an amazing amount of knowledge to myself over that week , this included practical demonstrations and step by step guidance through the processes.
He particularly impressed upon me the importance of getting the techniques, right and precise and his patience was immeasurable.
I really admired the way Nigel is so passionate about his craft and making quality handmade leather items.
I would recommend this course to anyone interested in working with leather.
Nigel is an awesome teacher - he knows everything there is to know, is happy to impart this knowledge, he is patient, interesting and also great fun to be with. I could not have enjoyed this course any more than I did. I recommmend this course very highly. Although I had learnt quite a lot on-line, nothing beats actual real world tuition. I now supplement his teaching with his amazing vimeo channel and as a result find myself making headway in learning this amazing craft. Nigel is really passionate about keeping this craft alive and this comes across in all that he does. Money well spent!
Day three of my week with Nigel involved this course. I had an absolute grand time making the I am currently wearing and will wear for years. Nigel explained everything before we began, and his keen eye observed me at every step to facilitate a quality leather item that I can proudly show off and also use as an example. Nigel is truly in a class of his own! Everyone want to take a leather course need not look further than Armitage Leather.
An excellent course. Run by a highly experienced instructor, who imparts his own high standard of workmanship onto the student during the session. With practical demonstrations and theory to aid in underpinning the learning process. Working with the student, Nigel quickly evaluates the student's skill level and works to improve it. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in leather craft.
