Description

Bringing Magical Stories to Life Ever wanted to create dramatic, magical fantasy photos but didn’t know where to start? Join Carla Watkins and learn how to bring your creative vision to life from your imagination, all the way from initial inspiration to the final piece. During the day we’ll spend some time in the classroom and some time out shooting with a model, and we’ll cover the following steps: Story crafting: looking at inspiration, figuring out the stories you want to tell, thinking about how to weave emotion & narrative into your images, and choosing your props and costumes for the feelings & stories you want to show. Scene setting: exploring colour, location, light and scale, and how they can impact or create a mood in your final photos. Planning your shoot: planning with editing in mind, visualising the final image, thinking about composition, making sure everything works together, deciding between a single final shot or compositing more than one together, and whether you are telling the story with one final photo or a series. We’ll also cover directing your model, posing and expressions, and working with the weather and your surroundings – you can make magic happen anywhere! The day is focused on the process and getting some images to work with, so you won’t do any actual editing on the day, but we will talk through what’s possible and what you need to keep in mind, particularly around compositing images from different locations, and if you are playing with scale. Photographers of all skill levels are welcome, though you will need a reasonable grasp of your settings and how to use your camera, as the day is geared towards storytelling photography, rather than technical photography teaching. Join me for a day of creative adventure, and leave ready to turn your magical photographic dreams into reality. About The Tutor: Carla Watkins Carla Watkins is a fine art photographic artist with a love of the ethereal, nostalgia and magic. She’s also a professional mermaid – yes, really! A former librarian with a vivid imagination and a lifelong love of reading, she weaves stories into photographs which could have walked off the pages of a book – and which invite you to find your own stories within them. She lives and works on the north Essex coast (which suits her mermaid heart), is often her own model, and her work pulls together memory, magic and wonder. About Flatford Mill We have four buildings that are used for visitor accommodation. Whilst most rooms are either en-suite or have a dedicated bathroom, there are somerooms in The Mill that share showers and toilets at the end of the hall. If this isun-suitable for you please make the office staff aware upon booking or as soon as possible. Please be aware that you are visiting a Field Centre that caters in the main for school parties; the accommodation is basic and dormitory style, but warm and comfortable.
