Discover the art of traditional hand engraving in this intensive two-day course led by award-winning professional engraver Dario Batzella. This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the essential techniques, tools, and design principles behind fine metal engraving. Course Overview: You’ll begin by learning the fundamentals of engraving, including how to prepare your plate and tools, practice the key cuts, and translate those skills into original designs. By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a solid foundation to build on in future engraving projects. Day 1 – Tutorial & Practice * Demonstration on preparing and sharpening a graver, with explanations of different types and their uses. (Your gravers will be pre-prepared before the session.) * Preparing your copper plate and practicing the first cuts. * Introduction to design principles for engraving. Day 2 – Design & Create * Develop your own engraving design based on the techniques learned on Day 1. * Engrave your final piece, guided by Dario’s expert instruction Materials and equipment Included: Sheet copper and engraving toolkit Bring your own: Eye glass, Optivisors or close-work glasses and a sand bag (if you have one) About the Tutor: Dario Batzella is a professional hand engraver based in Edinburgh. He studied engraving techniques at the School of Art and Medals in Italy and has since created numerous award-winning works, including the Goldsmiths’ Silver Award in Senior Engraving (2019) and two Bronze Awards (2023). I was interested in making and designing from a very early age and developed my first jewellery range in 2000. I then discovered my love for teaching in 2004 and have been developing my courses ever since. I have a home teaching studio for 1:1 & 1:2 sessions and in 2017 I set up a teaching studio at Yardley Arts where I can teach up to 11 learners. Qualifications: BA in Designed Metalwork and Jewellery from BCUC and MA Royal College of Art Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery.
