Intro to 3D Wet Felted Bags Workshop with Liz Riley

This workshop will be delivered by Liz Riley and supported by Lynn Comley (2 Tutors). You will spend the day in the magnificent Richardson Conservatory within the award-winning Scampston Walled Garden. This workshop gives participants all the basic information and skills to learn the technique of 3D wet felting, you will create a beautiful medium sized seamless wool felted handbag. Felt is surprisingly strong and no two pieces will ever be the same, this is the time to embrace your creativity and add your personal mark. This method of felting uses soap, warm water and agitation to tangle fibres together to create felt. In approximately 5 ½ hours you will explore making a colourful handbag, we start by using a resist (pattern) for your bag you will then be guided through choosing colours and textures and the wet felting process. There will be a short 30 minute break for lunch, in order to maximise teaching time. After the workshop you will also be able to visit the surrounding gardens which close at 5pm. You do not need any prior experience and you will be provided with all the necessary materials and equipment to use on the day.

Hello, I’m Liz, owner and founder of Everything Felt Fibre Art which I set up in 2017. Having qualified as a chartered accountant and working in Finance for over 20 years, I made the decision in 2017 to leave my career behind and explore a creative lifestyle, something where my true passion lies – creativity and wool. I have always had a passion for handicrafts and making things, learning many skills from my family from a very early age. Over the years I have explored and learnt many crafts, then I discovered felt and instantly fell in love with its versatility and creative opportunities. Embracing the dexterity of working with fibre I find transforming a sheep’s fleece into fabric endlessly fascinating, a way to create totally one of a kind, truly ‘me’ items that are meaningful and personal. My designs are inspired by experimenting with colour and texture. Focusing on traditional feltmaking techniques my work combines art with a love for making wearable useable items. Defined by strong colour combinations and colour blends using hand dyed wool, silks and hand spun yarns, adding fine detail my work is characteristic of artisan felted work. I source and choose only the very best wool, yarn and materials for my work, I believe that putting that effort into designing and creating deserves only the very best supplies. Being creative gives me a deep sense of wellbeing and confidence, this gave me the inspiration and incentive to share my knowledge and skills to encourage and develop creativity in others. I have developed kits and workshops to give ‘Makers’ the tools and techniques to create special items for themselves.
