Come and ‘Have a Bash’ at Blacksmithing on a one-day introduction course! The process of heating and forging hot metal is fun, fascinating and should be enjoyed by everyone (albeit pretty hard work!!)
Jake Hedge is a fully accredited Blacksmith from the National School of Blacksmithing who now runs his own Forge at a Sawmill in Onibury, set in the beautiful Shropshire hills near Ludlow. “Thanks to Jake’s patient and calm teaching” you’ll have no problem getting to grips with the fire and will be swinging a hammer with intent in no time!
The day starts at 9:45 where we’ll meet at the forge, a complimentary hot drink starts the day followed by a brief safety talk. Jake will then demonstrate the first piece you'll forge, guiding you through the process. Then it's hammers to the ready and get to forging some hot metal!!
You'll start off by forging a fire poker, followed by a Blacksmiths knife (letter opener)..if you get both of them done in good time then its on to forging some coat hooks before the end of the day.
If you’re not opposed Jake will also take a few ‘action shots’ throughout the day so you’ll be emailed some hi-res images of you working at the forge.
Flexible booking any day other than Sundays subject to availability. Full payment required to book your place on the course with a 25% non-refundable deposit.
At the moment all heating of your steel will be done using a gas forge.

My husband and I (both late 50s) did this course a few weeks ago. We had an absolute blast ! Jake is a fantastic tutor and will guide you through each step of the process and ensure you produce something wonderful to take home. It was a great day and just what we needed after lockdown. I'd recommend this course to anyone who wants to have a go ... you will surprise yourself in how much you can achieve. We will be back for another course soon.
This course is brilliant! My boyfriend and I (both 18) recently attended and had the best time... cannot emphasise enough how Jake is a wonderful teacher, really patient and fun and clearly very passionate about his craft. At no point did we ever feel particularly unsafe or like we didn't know what we were doing because of the clear demonstration and instructions beforehand. Would definitely reccomend this course!
What a great experience! My son and I recently attended Jake's have-a-bash course. No blacksmithing experience between the two of us, but through a well designed course and outstanding instruction from Jake, we completed some pretty good looking pokers and hooks. Jake explained and demonstrated every step of the process and then let us have a go. He was always by our side to provide feedback and guide us in the right direction. Looking forward to taking more of his classes in the future!
I booked this course as a surprise for my husbands birthday, we both had an absolutely fantastic day! Jake is a brilliant tutor, very friendly & patient! We will definitely be back next year, and we would highly recommend “give it a bash” with Jake!
My measure of any good training course is that you feel inspire to put in practice what you have learnt. I have. I've purchased an anvil and micro forge and started on honing my skills. Over the day course Jake paced the work so that I completed more than I thought I was capable of achieving. It's quite a skill to master the movement of steel over the anvil whilst hammering but the results are wonderful. 3 objects completed; Poker, wall hook and bottle opener. Family and friends are wow'd by the results so they can't be to bad.
Thanks Jake for your patience, advice and having a laugh.
I organised the day as a present for my husband’s birthday. His comments are below:
“It’s always rewarding to make something from scratch and to come away with a memento of the day and a functional tool is a bonus.
The course didn’t dwell on the theoretical but led quickly on to the practical. So, it was very much ‘hands on’. It involved several aspects through forging and forming and was, at times, fairly physical.
Instruction was excellent, facilities good and friendly help constantly to hand.
The ‘Smithy’ is a bit remote but accessible. Ludlow Is a close by place to stay if coming a long distance.
Overall, I’d recommend this as an enjoyable and an unusual experience.”
For myself I found the day really enjoyable and very rewarding. It was better for being a shared experience. Thanks Jake for a great day!
I had a great time making a surprisingly good looking fire poker and knife. Jake exhibits an interesting balance of technical knowledge, enthusiam and an artists eye for detail. Thoroughly recommend the experience.
Simply brilliant. An excellent day for me and my 15 year old son Harrison, each of us making two knives. After making one under close supervision, after lunch we each made our second pretty much on our own, which was really satisfying. I wished I could have made a third and a fourth. At home later I used one to prepare our tea, and we used them all for eating! A great experience, thanks Jake!
Jake was really accommodating and enthusiastic in helping me with a specific metalworking technique I wanted to try (mokume gane), he had done his own research into the technique which I really appreciated. We also had some time to do some traditional blacksmithing at the end! Jake was a patient and thorough teacher, and I would definitely recommend this course!
My wife bought this course with Jake for my Christmas present after we met him at the Ironbridge Xmas fayre. My son in law Ryan joined me for the day and we had a fantastic time making our fire pokers and letter knives. Jake is a great teacher and an expert in his field. He really took time to help us learn some blacksmithing techniques something I had always wanted to do. I would really recommend spending some time with Jake at Hedge Forge. Superb day and thanks Jake. Let me know when you start the axe making workshop and I will be booking.
Me and my lad had a great day blade smithing and came away with some nice pieces. Would definitely recommend as we learnt some interesting techniques moving the metal, and my lad had a knack of using the powerhammer.
An excellent session pitched at just the right level, Jake allowed me to work by myself after demonstrating how to create my designs in metal, but was ready to step in when I started to make mistakes. I came away with the confidence to tackle making more of the brackets by myself at home.
This was a Christmas present which initially seemed a little 'random' but on close reading of the itinerary looked very enjoyable. The reality was that is was a great day which I shared with 2 of my sons, we had fun whilst doing our utmost to closely follow Jake's detailed instructions. The results, whilst differing from each others and Jake's, were great and we left with a poker and letter opener each which we were all very pleased with.
Jake was engaging, informative and his instruction was clear and easy to follow, it was just the putting it into practise we struggled with. When we did 'stray' from the plan Jake stepped in and put things right without making us feel either foolish or helpless, he was very patient and approachable, there was a degree of banter between us all which added to the day.
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun day, remember to pack a lunch and wear old clothes because the forge can get dusty! Jake provided tea, coffee and bottled water which would be needed on a hot day. A great day - many thanks Jake.
My Dad, brother and I had a fantastic day trying our hand at blacksmithing. Jake is a great teacher; he made us feel really welcome, is very patient, and couldn't have done more to make sure we had an enjoyable time. He is clearly very passionate and skilled at what he does. I would thoroughly recommend this course if you want to try a traditional (and fun!) craft in a beautiful setting and produce some lovely pieces. 10/10!
I booked this course as a Christmas present for my husband and son who had always wanted to try their hand at blacksmithing, and they were both in their element from start to finish, don’t know where the time went as they were having so much fun.
Jake gave them a demonstration on how to make a blacksmiths knife and made it look so easy. He is so talented and clearly loves what he does.
We would highly recommend a day with Jake, he’s easy to get along with and a great teacher. At the end of the day my husband and son had made two blacksmith's knives each and was very proud of what they had achieved.
What a unique day. Give it a go you won’t be disappointed. Thank you once again Jake, we definitely will be back to try another project .
I had organised a surprise day for myself, husband and two grown up sons as Christmas presents for everyone. Jake very generously accommodated us on Christmas eve and we had an excellent day of bashing metal. Even I, at only 4' 11'' and ancient, managed to come away with a poker and a knife which I had made (mostly) myself. Dead chuffed. Jake's cheery good humour and professionalism shone through and we ended the day after leaving the forge comparing blisters and our handiwork and being enormously critical of the inferior ironwork in the pub fireplace!
Thank you Jake.
Epic time - thanks Jake!
Despite having no experience of being in a forge I walked out with two beautiful and functional bits of kit (in no small part due to Jake's help). I'd definitely recommend this course!
Really enjoyable day with Jake, a real craftsman. Goals set for the day were realistic and achievable and good advice along the way. Good approach where you watch Jake carry out the process first and then you try to emulate it, with pointers from him. Safety at the forefront of everything, which was good to see. Jake is a pleasure to be around and a calm and friendly atmosphere. Looking forward to going back to do other courses.
Slightly apprehensive having never done this before, however Jake’s clear instructions, calm demeanour and an obvious passion for his craft made it such an enjoyable day. We enjoyed making our pokers and knives and look forward to our next challenge. Give it a go! It is certainly value for money and Jake is fantastic teacher 🔨🔥😁
We (my 16 year-old son) and I both thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the day. We got stuck in straight away and were very proud of the results. Jake was a clear and enthusiastic tutor and knew just when to step in to help, and when to step back and let us flail a little :-) We also enjoyed getting to explore a range of tools/techniques throughout the session.
Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a taste of metalworking!
Had a super day! Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you Jake! Jake is a patient teacher whose clear expertise helped us create some beautiful metal work that initially I thought would be beyond me. We left with smiles on our faces and some treasures. Would highly recommend the course to everyone and am very tempted to have another go.
Really informative and thoroughly enjoyable practical day with Jake’s easy-going, friendly and reassuring guidance.
So absorbing that the day disappeared all too quickly and would not hesitate to go again sometime and recommend to anyone else too.
This was the absolute highlight of our holiday. Jake is lovely person and a superb teacher - he makes the day relaxed and fun. He paces the introduction of different techniques perfectly - we were busy but never rushed and achieved so much more than we expected to. He is great at assessing and adapting to each individual’s ability and level of confidence. I was certain that I’d need loads of help with the hammering and twisting the iron but, with Jake’s guidance, I actually ended up with pieces that were over 90% my own work. We are so chuffed with the pieces we have made.
We’d have no hesitation in recommending the ‘Have a Bash’ day to anyone.
Booked this day course for myself and my friend, we had an absolute blast! Jake is a brilliant teacher and walked us through each step with clear, easy to follow instructions. Highly recommend this course for a bit of a different day out, plus you get to take home your own fire poker and knife! Jake is a very talented blacksmith and if he runs anymore courses like this one I'll be signing up for them.
I had a brilliant day ‘Having a Bash’ at Blacksmithing. Jake was a wonderful teacher - very friendly, encouraging and patient. His clear instructions and ‘how to’ demonstrations quickly made me feel more confident about handling hot metal and hitting it with hammers. I was amazed to make anything in a day, let alone to manage a passable poker with twirly bits and fancy twists, as well as a useable knife with a scrolled handle. An amazing day, I highly recommend it.
My wife and I had an absolutely fantastic day with Jake. Neither of us had done any kind of metal working before and thanks to Jake’s clear explanations and demonstrations, we both left with pokers and knives that we are very proud to have made. They may be at the “rustic” end of the scale, but are unique, hand-made artefacts that we will treasure. Jake is a great teacher; he’s very patient and is happy to step in and help if you need it, but makes sure that what you make is yours and not just a piece that you’ve had a hand in. A day that we will remember for a long, long time. Thanks again Jake!
A present from my wife, what a fantastic day! I’ve occasionally badly bashed bits of metal for myself but this was a first taste of proper blacksmithing and couldn’t have wished for better. Jake’s course was really enjoyable, informative, productive and fun. His enthusiastic teaching style is very relaxed yet thorough and comprehensive giving a great insight into this highly skilled trade. Confidence builds as he gently reminds you of the processes and offers encouragement as you have a go yourself. I can’t recommend it highly enough! Whether you’ve done a lot of mechanical engineering before or none at all, this is a window into another world of real skill and art mixed with proper sweat and hard work! Do it now - book a day with Jake, you’ll be very pleased that you did!
We had such a great day! I took my two kids and they loved it. My son (10) and my daughter (13) learnt new skills and really enjoyed every aspect. Jake was patient and fun and put us all at ease. We made 3 different things that now have pride of place in our home. Really cannot recommend this day enough, you’ll love it!
This experience was bought for me as a surprise for my birthday by my wife. After a lovely drive out through the Shropshire countryside we arrived at the forge. Both my son and I took part.
Jake is an excellent teacher and host, very friendly and he knew his stuff. The day was well paced and plenty of support is at hand. Jake keeps the numbers low so is always available to help out. The facilities are everything you need for the day. Who knew that metal bashing could be such fun.
I am now the proud owner of an excellent poker and letter opener.
Highly recommended, go and do it!
I was really worried when we started that I’d find it really difficult but Jake was an excellent teacher and made me feel more confident. He also knew when to step in to lend his expert hand. My husband absolutely loved it and is desperate to come again!
Thank you Jake for such an amazing experience. :-)
First rate course. Had a fantastic day with Jake at his new location within the rolling hills of south Shropshire. I had the pleasure of one on one tuition with Jake who outlined the content of the day and the necessary safety measures needed to have a safe time whilst enjoying the full experience. The absolute best part of the day, not surprisingly, was just working with the metal. You have full instructions and demonstrations of the skills and techniques needed and then encouraged to just have a go. Jake was at hand to correct any errors but basically just get stuck in and have fun. There was the opportunity to have a go with the power hammer but in all honesty my preference was just the hammer against the hot metal and feeling the metal develop as you worked it. This is something I would certainly do again and in all likelihood will. Thank you Jake for a cracking day.
This was a fantastic day and a great way to gain an appreciation of the skills that go into the blacksmiths art. Jake was a very patient teacher, clear in all his explanations and very skilled in seamlessly recovering any minor student mistakes without any fuss. His teaching style achieves the tricky balance in ensuring that you do everything safely and to a good standard for a beginner while not being intrusive, all of which leaves you with a great feeling of achievement at the end of the day when you leave with items made through your own efforts.
Jake himself is incredibly skilled, making all the techniques look easy when he demonstrates what you will be doing yourself later, but his talent lies in then breaking these down into easily understood and manageable bits so that you surprise yourself when you are able to replicate what you have been shown, albeit much more slowly!
We had a great day and this taster has led to us wanting to learn more as soon as Jake sets up a blacksmithing part 2 course in his new forge. Would recommend this course to anybody. Thanks for a fun day Jake.
Fab day at the forge with Jacob, who really knows his stuff. Very relaxed teaching style, enough guidance so you stay on track but equally willing to let you have a bash (pun intended). Learnt loads of different techniques and left feeling tired but very satisfied with what we produced. If you fancy a go at blacksmithing you should definitely check this place out.
Jake runs a brilliant and tailored introduction to Blacksmithing. The course is well structured and adaptable to your needs. Good chat all day and very supportive. We will enjoy using our handmade implements for years to come.
What a great day out! We really enjoyed ourselves. We not only came away with a taste of Blacksmithing but some impressive creations too! Jake has a very easy friendly way about him and takes the day at a steady pace ensuring you understand what you're doing as you go along. We would highly recommend that if you've ever fancied a go, this is the place to do it.
My friend bought me this experience as a fabulous birthday treat. We both love to learn new skills & truly this couldn't have been better. Jake was a brilliant teacher, enthusing about his craft & clearly enjoying passing his skills on to others. Nick & I produced some pieces of work we were thoroughly proud of & enjoyed the process from start to finish. This was an experience that will never be forgotten!! Thanks Jake & keep up the fantastic work!
What a super day. My husband bought this as a treat for me and my sister in law and we had the best time ever. Jake gave great demonstrations and explained everything really clearly. We got to make a poker and letter opener and they look brilliant, especially the poker in which you try different techniques to get the details and finish. Lunch was at a cute little cafe and gave the boost for the afternoon.
Jake is a true artist, incredibley talented and a great teacher. I have a new appreciation for the hard work and creativity involved in being a blacksmith. I can’t reccommend highly enough.
My sister in law and I were treated to a day at Jake’s workshop to spend the day learning about and turning our hands to blacksmithing. We both had a fantastic time, Jake took the time to explain everything and demonstrate what we’d be doing, and helped us along the way as needed.
Lunch was very pleasant, and well needed after finishing our pokers. Afterwards it was straight back to the workshop to craft our knives.
Overall it was a really enjoyable day, and we both said that we’d definitely like to do it again!
My wife booked this course as a Christmas present to me. I had such a great day with jake, the whole day was relaxed and I learnt so much from this very talented blacksmith. The day started with a look around the forge with a coffee then straight to work firstly watching jake demo a poker , then my turn came jake was very informative and clear with instructions giving me confidence with what I was doing. A bit on lunch in a charming bistro around the corner from the forge and back to it.
I will certainly recommend this course as it was such a memorable day, Jake is a hugely talented blacksmith and such a down to earth guy who clearly is passionate about his craft and I will be booking another day with him to further my skills as a ‘hobby’ blacksmith.
I booked this course for my boyfriend's birthday in January and it could absolutely not have gone down better! Jake is really fun to be around and so clear in explaining how to do everything, and very knowledgeable about blacksmithing in general - even coping with the zillion questions Nick threw at him! I was (stupidly) surprised at how long everything took to make and it gave us a real appreciation of the art and skill in blacksmithing. We came away with a blacksmith knife and a poker each and they all look great, I particularly love the poker, it's so pretty on the fireplace. The whole day was really good fun and Nick loved having a go with all the tools (although I was way better at the power hammer!) and really seeing what traditional blacksmithing is all about. All in all an absolutely brilliant day and earned me some serious girlfriend points. Might have to come back for another go! p.s. sorry abut slow review Jake, hope the gates are going well!
Me and my wife a had a great day with Jake at his forge! I would certainly recomend it to anyone. The joy you get from creating something with your own hands (with a little expert help from time to time) is immense. Jake was very easy to get along with and a very good instructor. He even was able to help me create a Mjolnir (Thors Hammer) pendant. As a side note the cafe was very nice for lunch also providing a tasty selection. The parking at the forge is a little tight so if you have a large car or arent very confident in squeezing through tight spaces i would recomend parking on car park around the corner.
An excellent day all round!!- will definatley look at more blacksmithing in future
What a brilliant day from start to finish. Jake's teaching style was very informative and yet relaxed, putting me at ease straight away. Looking around the forge at some of the pieces Jake has produced, I thought there was no hope for a complete novice like me, but by the end of the day I had managed to make a poker, amongst other things, that I was truly proud of. I've spent the last week saying to anybody and everybody I've met "Let me show you my poker". Jake is really easy to get along with, conversation just flowed all day, and he never tired of answering my numerous questions. Really keen to have another day's blacksmithing. I cannot recommend Jake highly enough, he deserves to go far. Many many thanks.
I had an absolutely great time. Good old hard yakka. Fantastic teacher, helpful and understanding offering guidance but allowing me independence to work the metal myself and create the designs I had in mind. Jack made me feel confident and capable and I was thrilled with what skills I was able to develop in such a short time.
Thanks Jake......'bonza mate'!
Thanks for the great review!! Was a pleasure to have my first international student in the forge!
I really loved the day with Jake in the workshop and surprised myself by being able to make a poker and four hooks in the time. Jake was an excellent teacher. Very encouraging. Helped when needed but allowed us to have a good go by ourselves. By the afternoon session I felt pretty independent which is surprising in one day and with such a new skill. Thanks Jake. You were great !
What a GREAT DAY, proper hands on from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and day, the time flew by.
I have never done any metalworking before but with excellent friendly tuition and guidance from Jake managed to make some pretty nice pieces ( If I do say so myself ). I was amazed at what stunning pieces of art, by Jake, can be achieved in metal. He is a very talented and a natural teacher.
Thank you for a very memorable day and WILL recommend Jake and and his course to anyone who wants a terrific first taste of the blacksmiths art. A****
All the best for the future.
I took my grandson last weekend to Jake's introduction to blacksmithing course at Ludlow. The whole day was excellent, the teaching was well structured and delivered with a very friendly approach, and considering we had never done this before we both made good progress and left with some recognisable pieces of work !.
My grandson Sam is considering going on to college to study Blacksmithing and this was just the positive experience he needed.
I would thoroughly recommend Jake's course to anyone interested, and would like to wish you Jake every success in the future.
Jayne and I visited Jacob on Thursday 31st October 2018. It was everything we hoped it would be. Proper forge. Proper nice bloke in Jacob. Nice and relaxed atmosphere to enjoy experiencing blacksmithing. Good fun and you do everything and use all the tools and techniques yourself. It's a great thing to do together too!
We had been on a similar course elsewhere which we had thought was very good but quickly realised that Jake is on a much higher level altogether. When booking we had asked if it would be possible to make a flower and our expectations, based on previous experience, was that we could produce one between us in a day - we ended up making four with time to spare! Jake had planned our day for our exact requirements and provided the perfect balance between demonstrating techniques and guiding us in practical activities whilst allowing us to progress at our own pace. He encouraged us to participate in all stages of the process and using the different machines. The forge was perfectly set up as the two anvils allowed us both to work at the same time and the gas forge was a great bonus as we could be working on one item whilst the next item was heating up. Jake is an extremely likeable lad with a great sense of humour which, coupled with his smithing skills, makes him an outstanding teacher. A really brilliant day and one which we can't praise or recommend highly enough.
Went to Jake for a blacksmithing experience with my other half to celebrate my birthday. The day was just brilliant. Warm welcome, clear demonstration and support throughout. Jake provided a relaxed environment and was phazed by nothing (including an epic tool malfuntion caused by some over enthusiastic cleaning!). Would recommend this day to anyone with an interest in hitting hot metal with hammers.
Well what a brilliant day! Whether you have no idea ,or, think you have, Jake gives hands on tuition, encouragement and guidance on every aspect of what is involved! Relaxed, informative and insightful !
I had reservations of not being up to the job! Well, there is far more to the art. Finesses, precise and so so engaging! I am thoroughly hooked on this ancient yet current art form. Definately an experience that I feel enriched to have had. The history of tools and finishing on this work , left me privileged to have shared with my other half. We both would recommend this unique opportunity! Thank you Jake ! A true gent of your profession and Artistry. Sue and Andrew.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. It was an absolute pleasure having you both in the workshop!!
Very much enjoyed the day. It was a great introduction to blacksmithing. Jake familiarised me with the key equipment that I’d be using and gave a clear demonstration of how to make various items. Jake articulated every step of the process which helped me thoroughly understand the procedure of producing each piece.
The workshop is great, it’s authentic. There’s no computers, no air conditioning; just metal, fire and dripping sweat .
An exceptional day and would recommend to anyone who is looking for an good personal introduction to blacksmithing.
Many thanks Jake.
I never had the chance to do any form of metalwork at school or in the many years since. Meeting Jake at his occasional market stall pushed me into 'having a bash'. Absolutely no regrets. This is simple personal tuition in a simple workshop: No glitzy surroundings or presentations. Just a solid 'hands on' day.
Jake's teaching style is patient and understanding, with the aim of producing some hardware at the end. A proper introduction to the craft, giving a great understanding of what is needed to create metalwork.
Thank you Steve for the kind words, was a pleasure teaching you! Kind regards, Jake.
I had a fantastic day. I wasn't totally sure what to expect except a flaming hot forge and new t̶o̶y̶s̶ tools to play with (which were definitely there! Somewhat vital...) but I also left with a new appreciation and understanding of the craft. Not only that but quite a collection of creations. I was happily surprised at what can be accomplished in a day. Jake is a very patient (thankfully!) and friendly tutor which made the day a lot of fun. It felt like a gradual build in confidence in the techniques so by the end of the day you're tending the forge and judging the timing. I left feeling like I had been given a real opportunity to experience blacksmithing, and that was just the tip of the iceberg i'm sure. I'd recommend anyone to, well, have a bash. Thanks Jake!
Thank you Mia for the great review. You were a pleasure to teach and great fun to have in the workshop! Until the next time!
