Thank you Elaine for an absolutely brilliant course and welcoming us into your beautiful studio. I was a complete beginner before the course and can now say I have the spinning bug!
This was a fantastic weekend, in a wonderful location. Elaine is an excellent teacher, guiding you expertly through the entire process, from processing the raw fleece to learning to draft and spin. I went home with my own handmade skein of yarn and now can’t wait for my own spinning wheel to arrive. Thank you very much Elaine, I hope to use this knowledge for many years to come and will treasure the memory of first spinning in your studio.

If you have ever wanted to spin this course is an absolute must.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Bless you Meg. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your course. You are a natural spinner and I hope you do indeed carry on spinning for many years to come - any maybe teach it to another generation .

Ruth - - #37120

This is an excellent course. It was worth every penny and the long drive. Elaine is a first class teacher and her extensive knowledge ensure that everyone is successful and leaves with the skills to prepare and spin their own yarns. The small size of the group (3), ensures that individual tuition can be given, alongside exploring at your own pace. Elaine’s studio is an inspiration, full of books, fleeces, equipment and spinning wheels! It was really enjoyable and I was disappointed that we couldn’t continue for a 3rd day. Thanks Elaine. (We stayed in an AirBnb in Grange over Sands, about 15 minutes away by car - a perfect base).

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thank you Ruth for your thoughtful review. It was a privilege to meet and work with you. I'm so happy to once again be able to pass on the knowledge and skills for others to be able to enjoy the wonderful art of hand spinning.

Jane Marsh - - #32845

I've completed a few half day spinning courses but just couldn't seem to get the hang of it until I went on this course and with Elaine's patient teaching, I am finally converting my fleeces into usable wool! I also did the fibre preparation course at the same time and it was all brilliant. !!

Jane Marsh - - #32846

Such a useful course for anyone who needs no nonsense guidance in how to turn fleece into something much more valuable! I combined with a hand spinning course also - thoroughly recommend this!

Abigail setters - - #31603

Had a great time at the fibre preparation workshop. We were made to feel very welcome and comfortable despite the covid-19 restrictions. Elaine's knowledge of this traditional craft was really inspiring and I am keen to learn more. I now have my own source of wool and am ready to get spinning :)

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

|So glad you enjoyed yourself Abigail. Thanks for the review. Happy spinning!1

Stacey Croft - - #31322

I'm so glad I had the opportunity to go on the fleece to fibre weekend course. Learnt so much, and Elaine was very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions we had. It was all done very carefully and we kept socially distant given the current pandemic but Elaine still managed to be welcoming. Covered picking fleeces, prepping them, drum carding, drop spindles and of course spinning and plying, and skein wash. It's really inspired me to carry on practicing so will be getting my own wheel soon.

Gill Waite - - #30743

Thank you Elaine for a great course. I really enjoyed the day and found your wealth of knowledge and patience a great comfort. During these difficult times I felt very secure in the precautions and way you structured the course. The friendly attitude of the small group in the the gorgeous setting of your workshop made it very special. The pace of the course was good and I look forward to practicing.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thank you Gill. I was a pleasure to meet you and I am so happy you enjoyed your course. Happy spinning.

Linda Nussbaum-Richman - - #30718

The small group made it easy to learn & get personal attention when needed. Elaine was a wonderful teacher, warm, friendly, very professional. Her expertise was obvious, she was so knowledgeable and passed on a great deal of very useful information. Our group of 3 attended during the Covid restrictions, and our safety and well-being were carefully thought out, with all guidelines strictly followed. The length of the day was just right. I feel I learnt a lot, I achieved what I wanted and now, I must practice, practice, practice! The venue was gorgeous, what a lovely, peaceful place to hold a course! I will definitely book another course, when I’m more practiced at spinning! Thank you Elaine, for your help, wisdom and patience! Regards, Linda.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thank you Linda. I am so pleased you found the course useful and enjoyable. Happy spinning!

Sue Smith - - #30470

Thank you Elaine, I had a thoroughly enjoyable, informative and hands on weekend. I even managed to bring home a skein of spun wool. I really wish I lived a bit closer and could take some other courses. I will be heading home to make a start on the fleece I have in my garage and need to sort out my spinning wheel and then I can use all my new knowledge. Thank you so much.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thank you Sue . I'm so glad you enjoyed your course. It was fun to work with you.

Sue Boyes - - #30340

What a wonderful weekend I have had! Elaine is a wonderful teacher and the course is so informative, I can’t quite believe how much I achieved in two days! I can highly recommend this course, I have come home with such enthusiasm to get started on my wheel. Although COVID 19 is ever present, Elaine had all measures in place to keep us safe. Thank you Elaine and one day soon I will show you my knitted masterpieces!!

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thank you Sue. It was a privilege to work with you and I'm so glad you enjoyed your time here. Looking forward to seeing the 'creation'.

Andrea Hobbs - - #30253

Hi Elaine
I just wanted to say such a huge thank you for a great day yesterday. So informative and full of ‘oh I get it’ moments for me! I loved that the way you explained things made such sense to my brain - and I really enjoyed our chats in between too. It’s always nice to meet a fellow crafter of beautiful yarns and things, as well as a crafter of peacefulness!
I was onto my wheel this morning and cleaned things up as you suggested and gave it some tlc. It’s looking more cheerful and less grungy! I’ve got more spinning and fleece sorting planned for this afternoon and over the next few days. And I have some raw fleece soaking in rainwater I think we can conclude that you worked your magic and my confidence and enthusiasm is restored.
I can’t thank you enough and hope to see you again for more learning at some point when I’m ready for more!
Very best

SALLY COOPER - - #29392

Time flew by! What a lovely day! Elaine was fantastic in bringing together the benefit of her experience with a number of technical terms and with providing a lots of "hand on" time for us beginners. The group was small (three of us) and I think we were all on the course because the cost had been a present from a friend or from family. It was certainly one of the best presents I've ever had! Being the person I am, I've already moved on to buying books recommended on the day and I don't think it's going to be long before I buy a spinning wheel and a "crown top" and see what happens. If I can't get the hang of it - it'll be back to Elaine for guidance.

Gwen Nicholas - - #29306

I have had a brilliant day today learning the basics of hand spinning. Elaine was very patient and knowledgeable as well as extremely enthusiastic about all aspects of wool. Lunch was very pleasant and relaxed and a time to chat and get to know each other a little better. It was great to be able to take away the wool we had spun and to feel that this would be the start of a new craft journey. I would recommend this course wholeheartedly.

Sandra Robinson - - #28866

Really enjoyed the course, always wanted to do this. Elaine was really helpful, knowledgeable and easy to learn from - she explained everything really well, so I understood what to do.
Not sure at this time if I would get a spinning wheel but really enjoyed the hand spinning - so might give that a go first.

Laura Hinchey - - #28484

I thoroughly enjoyed my day, thank you! I’ve learnt everything I need to be able to prepare a full fleece from raw to something I can spin with. Elaine is so full of knowledge and is more than happy to share everything she knows!

Janet Pugh - - #28221

This was a fact-filled course with lots of hands-on time. Starting with learning a bit about different sheep breeds in relation to the type of yarn they produce through to skeining and washing the finished two-plied yarn we went through cleaning the raw fleece to carding, spinning on a drop spindle and on a wheel. There is so much to learn with lots of unfamiliar and seemingly humorously-named tools and processes. Lunch was wholesome and very tasty. Constructive feedback: I would have liked to have been able to take some written material away. Maybe a summary of what was covered, or even just a glossary of common the terms used. Thanks, Elaine.

Janet Sumner - - #27348

Elaine was very welcoming and delivered the extensive information in a relaxed and consise way! I thoroughly enjoyed my time and would highly recommend the course to anyone who is new to spinning.
Fantastic course set in beautiful surroundings with a lovely workshop.

Jessica Jackson - - #27275

I have just spend a lovely weekend with Elaine in her studio. I am amazed to have gone from having zero experience to producing a yarn that I am really rather proud of! Elaine was incredibly patient and looked after us well over the course of the two days. I can't recommend this course highly enough - especially if you are an absolute beginner or even if you need to brush up on your skills. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience - I can't wait to start practicing myself at home!

Joanne Penny - - #27197

Thoroughly enjoyable day. Nice to try spinning, before considering a purchase.

Sarah Preston-Hall - - #27039

Elaine was a superb teacher, full of knowledge and advice on fibre preparation. She made us very welcome in her home and studio, taking us through the whole prep process from skirting to picking and carding to drafting. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and came away with the knowledge and enthusiasm to continue the processes at home. Elaine also let me have a go on her spinning wheel which was a fabulous treat! A very generous and inspiring teacher.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thanks Sarah. So glad you enjoyed your course and got so much out of it.

Sarah - - #25515

What a wonderful weekend of learning, friendship and utter relaxation! I left feeling energised and excited to practise, practise practise. Elaine is a calm and patient teacher with a wealth of knowledge and skill. Would highly recommend the course to anyone wanting to explore this fascinating craft.

Joan - - #25490

Spent a wonderful weekend in one of the most beautiful places in the Country; reconnecting with art of spinning. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute - the atmosphere was relaxed & friendly & gosh we certainly learnt a lot about wool & spinning.
Really enjoyed the lunches of delicious soup and about learning the art of keeping slugs off runner beans!
Thank you I would highly recommend the course what ever your ability.

jo Burton - - #25117

Great course. Elaine is very knowledgeable and generous with her time and home. Super studio. Brilliant to work with our own fleece and meet others with theirs, really adds to the understanding of the wool and how to treat it. Came away fuelled with enthusiasm. Would recommend a course with Elaine.

Caroline Haydock - - #24563

Amazing weekend spent with Elaine in the new studio. As a knitter I knew little about the preparation and production of the yarn I buy and use. As the course title suggests Elaine took us from the preparation of a raw fleece through washing, carding and on to spinning in a friendly and informative fashion. There was plenty of time to develop and practise new skills and I came away with a skein of yarn which I was quite proud of - enough to knit a hat. I now want to search out my own wheel and develop the ideas buzzing round my head. Lunch was delicious.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thanks Caroline. So pleased you enjoyed yourself and found the course worthwhile. It was a privilege to teach you .

Katharine Francis - - #22943

A lovely day spent learning to spin in beautiful surroundings.

Elaine explains everything clearly and helps you understand the what and why rather than just the how.

Would thoroughly recommend if you are thinking of giving spinning a go.

Helen Janice and Anne - - #22604

We were all novices and had a great couple of days with Elaine teaching us all about spinning from fleece to fibre! Elaine is generous with her knowledge and patience. I feel ready to have a go and have already ordered a spinning wheel and various other bits and bobs - excited to take this further.
Teas and coffees and lunch were great.
Thank you Elaine (and Chris)

Carolyn - - #22222

This course is brilliant, can’t believe how much I learnt in 2 days. Elaine has a very encouraging and relaxed teaching method, thoroughly recommend this course.

Response from Cartmel Handspun Spinning School:

Thank you. It was a pleasure to work with you.

Pauline Johnston - - #22221

I've had a great time learning the process of spinning and this course has given me the confidence to start producing my own hand spun yarn in the future.
Elaine is a fabulous tutor, her passion for what she does shines through and is inspiring.
I also met two lovely, interesting ladies also on the course with me.
Elaine brings you into her home, treats you to a tasty lunch and lots of tea,"it's thirsty work!" At the end of day two you leave with your very own yarn and lots of good advice to carry forward.

Meriel Antoniou - - #22224

This was an excellent course for anyone wanting to try their hand at spinning for the first time. Elaine is a wonderful teacher with a huge amount of patience. She shared her knowledge with enthusiasm and welcomed us into her home.
We were able to experiment on several different types of wheel and were taught various different methods for each stage of the process.

I have certainly got the bug as a result of this course and am already searching for the spinning wheel that will transform my own flock of Ryeland sheeps fleeces into yarn!

Pamela Easton - - #21419

I have just spent two days with Elaine learning all about spinning. She has so much knowledge and experience which she willingly shared. We learned about selecting a fleece, how to get the fleece ready for carding and then moved onto spinning. At the end of the course I have come home with spun wool that I will be able to knit with.
This was a fantastic course and I happily recommend it to you if you want to learn to spin or improve your spinning.
Elaine also kindly provided an excellent lunch.
Many thanks Elaine for a wonderfully informative, fun, weekend.

Carol Jackson - - #21034

I had a wonderful day with Elaine. Never thought I’d be able to spin with a wheel......but yes I can. I’m so thrilled I’ve booked the two day course. It’s amazing 👍

Annette Schindler - - #20876

I have just had a wonderful day with the wonderful Elaine, she explained the use of drop spindles and before I knew it I was attempting to use a spinning wheel. Elaine's calm and patient teaching manner was brilliant and her explanations of how to use the spinning wheel and comparisons of different styles and types was extremely helpful. She is genuinely interested in why you are attending her course and then offers tips and advice suited to your own personal needs. Very highly recommended! In fact I plan on booking myself on to the 2 day course where you prepare and then spin and fleece from start to finish!

Kerry Ballard - - #20065

Hi Elaine, thank you soooo much for today, it was absolutely brilliant, I have learnt loads. You are a fantastic teacher and VERY patient with us. Also very generous with both your wool and your knowledge. Wow, what a skill you have to spin such beautifully even and fantastic yarns, I now know how incredibly hard that is, so it was a real treat to see your work. Thank you again, brilliant course, enjoyed every minute.

P.s. I think you should charge more for what you give.

What a thoroughly enjoyable day - Elaine had so much patience and I would really recommend this course to anybody wanting to learn this lovely craft. Very inspiring, educational and fun! Thank you very much Elaine - I ordered my own drop spindle this morning and next stop, a spinning wheel.

Jules Farrer - - #19733

Thoroughly enjoyed the two day course. Elaine offers a wonderful, warm welcome and a comprehensive basic course for the aspiring new spinner. From raw fleece, through all the stages of wool preparation, spinning on both a drop spindle and a wheel, to coming home with your own plied yarn, Elaine offers wonderful tuition, individual attention and an extensive spinners 'library' of reference books which can answer any questions no matter how obscure. What a great grounding in yarn basics! Highly recommended.

Sue Williams - - #18676

I had a fantastic day with Elaine , being a beginner Elaine was very patient and easy to understand her instruction , I would recommend these courses to anyone . I have now bought my own wheel and fleece to start at home after one days tuition . I have made a friend as well .

Nick - - #18309

I had the pleasure of attending Elaine's 2 day course. What a joy! I didn't want it to end. Elaine is an inspirational teacher, very patient with total beginners (me) and extremely encouraging . The 2 days were great with plenty of time to start to develop the practical skills involved under Elaine's supportive care. I am hooked! Lovely hat knitted using the skeins of my own spun wool i took away and spinning wheel being delivered today!
Thank you Elaine, you have set me on the road of a new skill and delightfully engaging new hobby.

Hannah Rosebury-Lowe - - #18270

Highly addictive! Elaine is a fantastic tutor, endlessly patient despite my apparent incompetence! I did eventually get the hang of it & left with a head full of information-being a 2 day course, most of it has sunk in too. Lunch was delicious, friendly atmosphere & a fun way to spend a weekend. I have a few sheep & hope to spin their wool and now feel confident in how to prepare the fleece & that it's only practice with a wheel standing in my way. Since return home I have successfully carded & spun fur saved from my Spitz dogs on a drop spindle,I am hooked.

Ruth Simpson - - #18167

Where to start...?
I booked a two day course for my daughter and I, and together with another keen beginner (a man) , we set off with Elaine to learn all about fleece, and how to make yarn. Elaine was endlessly patient and very informative, and it was fascinating. I had my own wheel, which I took with me, and it was great to actually make it work! At the end of the course, we all had yarn to take home, and a burning desire to make some more.
Three days later I was at World of Wool in Huddersfield, buying fluff, and my daughter had already taken delivery of a drop spindle and wool!
Thanks Elaine, for helping us discover a new hobby. 😊
Oh, and she makes a lovely lunch too!

JackieHollands - - #17701

I had a great weekend along with two other interesting ladies learning a new skill from Elaine.
I consider myself a perpetual student and enjoy attempting new craft skills and this was by far the most challenging yet at the same time very rewarding. I came away from the weekend with a new interest which I will pursue and that will enrich my other crafty hobbies. Thanks to Elaine I feel ready to embark on a new learning journey. She is a very inspirational teacher and I’m looking forward to exploring the possibilities of this new skill. Thank you to Elaine for her patient explanations and to my two new friends for an enjoyable weekend and also Thanks to my Husband for my 60th Birthday treat.

Pat Macfarlane - - #17518

I was a complete novice before starting this course, however I was delighted with the two days I spent with Elaine.
Elaine is an excellent teacher and has an abundance of patience especially when unraveling my first attempts. Having a small class is definitely an advantage and the other two ladies in the group were great company.
For anyone contemplating enrolling in the course, do it! You will not be disappointed, I came away at the end of the second day feeling triumphant having achieved the end result albeit a rather rustic skein of wool.
Elaine is a wealth of knowledge for all things about fleece and fibres, I am definitely going to develop this hobbie.

Kim - - #17445

Elaine was a fantastic instructor! I had never used a spinning wheel before this weekend and now I am completely addicted to this craft with the intention of purchasing my own spinning wheel so I can card and spin my own wool. The setting was beautiful (despite the rain), the lunch was delicious, and the company was excellent. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn more about wool, carding and spinning. Thank you Elaine!

Ruth - - #17192

I really enjoyed the 2 day course. It was instructive, in pleasant surroundings and pleasant company. I learnt a great deal and it spurred me on to continuing with fleece and spinning.
The first day was particularly intense and exhausting! Maybe we're no longer used to concentrating
for long periods........a printed hand-out would be useful with basic details of each process.

Kate Robertson - - #16630

Had a fantastic day, learned so much. I feel ready and inspired to carry on by myself and transform the pile of fleeces into piles of yarn!

Cate Anderson - - #14578

I really enjoyed this information and skills-packed weekend. I learnt such a lot. Spinning for the first time felt like reversing round a corner on your first driving lesson! But once I started to understand the component parts of the process, things fell into place more. Since getting home, I have tried out spinning three different fibre lengths, and am teaching myself hand-carding through YouTube. This is a lovely hobby and a great 60th birthday present from my family. Many thanks to Elaine for her wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Pam Harrington - - #14565

As a complete newcomer to spinning, this two-day course was a perfect opportunity to learn techniques and practice them. Elaine had lots of knowledge and advice to share, and also provided a delicious lunch. It was fascinating to learn how a raw fleece can be turned into beautiful yarns. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a weekend learning how to spin in a fantastic Lakeland setting.

Beverley Chapman - - #14354

Elaine is a patient and highly skilled teacher. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday.

Ulrike Ranson - - #14286

I had never spun before but was somehow inspired by the spinning wheel my parents have stored in their attic for years. I really enjoyed the different processes and experiences spinning offers, feeling the fleece, listening to the wheels, seeing the thread forming, and being thrilled by the end result. Elaine is a great teacher and mentor, very patient as well as knowledgeable and offers this course in her warm and cosy house. I can only recommend it.

Jane Colman - - #13874

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2 day fleece to fibre spinning course, it is exactly what I needed. I have my own wheel which Elaine suggested I bring along to work on, she even showed me how to look after it and set it up properly for me. Elaine is so knowledgeable and explains everything really well. I had been overspinning my yarn but by the end of the 2 days I had made 2 pretty good skeins of my very own, one was even stripey! The days were very relaxed with a lovely lunch. The only criticism is the days went far too quick!

Julie Wood - - #13862

What a great way to spend a weekend! I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Elaine has a vast amount of knowledge and even more patience. Looking forward to practicing what I've learned.

Alex - - #11719

What a great way to spend a weekend! Having never done any spinning or crafting before, with Elaines help I managed to produce something resembling "proper" wool by the end of the two day course. I learned so much and am planning to use my own fleeces once Santa delivers a spinning wheel. Elaine was lovely and I had a great time. Would definitely recommend especially for beginners like me. Thank you.

Ruth - - #11711

Last weekend I enjoyed a really interesting course learning about the fleece and ending up spinning and coming out with uneven but non the less plied yarn.
Elaine was very knowledgeable and explain everything well.
This course was bought for me as b birthday present by my children and they choose so well.
I would recommend this weekend as you will have fun and learn a lot

Jean - - #11704

A full and active week-end learning hands-on all the time. We did quite literally travel from the fleece to the finished fibre and all stations in between. Lots to absorb. Challenging but very satisfying.

Helen Dixon - - #10966

Thoroughly enjoyed the two day course. I now have three skeins of slightly uneven wool and have bought a spinning wheel so I can practice. The course was a great introduction which gave information from getting a fleece, cleaning it. preparing it and spinning. The fact I could already treadle was a help but the two days was time to get started. Lunch was very nice too. Highly recommend this course if you want to make a start at spinning.

Jeanette - - #10421

Having never spun any wool I was really nervous about attending this course in case I couldn't do it and was out of my depth. Elaine very quickly made me feel relaxed and at ease. She was a great teacher, so calm and nothing was too much trouble. I was really please to come away with my home spun wool. A really enjoyable day.

Julie - - #10406

Fantastic day with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tutor. Elaine was patient and encouraging through every aspect of the spinning process. The small number in the group (3) meant that close supervision and assistance came in a timely manner and kept everyone spinning throughout the day! With no previous knowledge of spinning I came away with my own, handspun wool. Great day.

Lesley Webster - - #9200

Brilliant day! Elaine is so knowledgeable, patient and kind. I have learnt so much and have gained in confidence. The course exceeded my expectations and I will definitely be returning for further tuition in due course. Highly recommended.

Susan - - #9173

A useful one-to-one couple of hours learning to use a drop spindle for a re-enactment group.

Dianne - - #8741

I really enjoyed my day with Elaine. There were only three of us which meant we all got lots of attention. The day seemed to fly by and I came home with my own skein of wool. I now feel confident spinning and look forward to enjoying it alongside my other crafts.

Bridget Kauffman - - #8648

My daughter and I attended this class. We had a wonderful time. Elaine is a very attentive instructor and was always aware of the students skills and needs as the class progressed. She shared very helpful information on wool, spinning wheels, preparing wool, what to look for in a raw fleece and spinning. We enjoyed meeting Jacqui and visiting with her. We traveled by train to Grange-Over-Sands and were without transportation to Elaine's class. She arranged transportation for us. If opportunity arises, I would like very much to return and attend the two day spinning course.

Jenny Taylor - - #8662

What an education! I never knew there was so much to learn about wool and spinning. So much packed into the course. I learnt how to spin using a spindle and spinning wheel. Elaine is patient, encouraging and an excellent teacher. Thanks Elaine you are very talented and I am totally hooked - can't want to get my own wheel. Loved the home made vegetable soup!

Jane - - #8661

Thoroughly enjoyed my course with Elaine having packed in an enormous amount in just two days. I have learnt how to choose a fleece and turn it into usable fibre and all aspects in between - coming home with my own skeins of hand spun wool. I can now use a drop spindle and a spinning wheel with confidence. Great company, lovely lunches. Thanks

Jane H - - #8659

Enjoyable day. Everything provided. Ticked every box.

Jacqui Boughton - - #8586

Shared a great day with Elaine and two ladies from Alaska (!!) learning to spin. Thanks.

Gillian Day - - #8113

Just returned home after a very enjoyable two day course learning to spinning. Elaine is a very good teacher and put across her craft in a way that to a novice you can understand. If you wish to learn to spinning I would highly recommend this course. Also great surroundings and delicious lunch

Connie Sinclair - - #8112

Not long home after a great weekend learning to spin on my own spinning wheel. Elaine is a brilliant teacher and explains every detail of all aspects of spinning from choosing your fleece, preparing it and producing your very first skein of wool, mine is presently hanging up drying after being washed before leaving Eller How this afternoon. Highly recommend the two day course for anyone wanting to learn to spin

Celia Cartwright - - #8111

I enjoyed a wonderful two days in a delightfully quiet corner of the Lake District, learning so much about spinning and all that spinning entails. Elaine is a superb teacher who knows her craft well and has the ability to share both her enthusiasm and her skills with those like me who knew nothing. I left with the yarn I had created, the rudiments of the craft and a determination to practise, practise, practice.
Oh, and the lunch of home made soup was delicious.

Nicola Roddam - - #7936

What an excellent day, thoroughly enjoyed it! Elaine was an excellent and patient teacher. I have come away with a lot more confidence and knowledge of spinning. I now know what to look for when buying a fleece. Would highly recommend the course to others.

Hjørdis Leigh - - #7676

Thoroughly enjoyed the 2 day spinning course for beginners. I have done some spinning before, but had become rather disheartened as things didn't seem to work out. I am amazed how much I learned on this course and am now definitely getting back to spinning!
The course was set up very logically so everything flowed along well and it was very easy to see the logic of the various stages and how they fitted together.

Anita Bailey - - #7675

What a wonderful weekend, Ruth is an excellent teacher, friendly, knowledgeable, patient and above all clear. The course covered everything it promised and more, in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. The location is stunning.
I came away with so much knowledge, lots of great memories, laughs and met new friends.
Ruth shared a lot of tips that will be used for years To come.thank you

Rhian Brown - - #7652

I've just spent a lovely couple of days learning to spin, having never so much as touched a wheel before. Elaine was very patient and supportive and a real expert in her field.
The two days were very relaxed and friendly and in lovely surroundings. I learned a lot more than I expected to, from tips on choosing the right fleece through to coaching on improving my technique on the wheel.
I'm feeling so inspired that I'm off to buy a wheel at the earliest opportunity!

Donna Walsh - - #7640

Just completed the two day course for beginner - Fleece to Fibre, if you are new to this I would highly recommend this! Elaine is very patient and understanding makes you feel relaxed, has a fantastic way on explaining these in a easy way to understand, also she has an amazing knowledge.
I'd only been spinning a couple of weeks my yarn was over twisted and lumpy came away spinning the most amazing yarn. Definitely recommend this is anyone!

What a thoroughly enjoyable day. After having acquired a Spinning Wheel from an acquaintance I had been struggling to get to grips with the techniques, Elaine was the epitome of patience and as a result I now have a much better feel for what I was doing wrong. I left feeling uplifted and ready to spin! My wheel needs a little maintenance though before I can start (part of the learning along with many other tips and asides) absolutely brilliant, I am looking forward to attending another of Elaine's courses at a later date . Thank You very much

Susan O - - #7007

I was really pleased to have attended Elaine's 'Learn to Spin' Course.
She was really keen to share her skill with others and was very patient in explaining techniques.
I had a really good day and came away feeling very enthusiastic about continuing to learn the art of spinning.
I hope to be attending another of her courses as I get more expert with my wheel!!!

What an inspiring weekend. Didn't think I would get it but by Sunday morning I was happily spinning. Great to go through the whole process from start to yarn. I can't wait to get going myself now.

Alison pooler - - #6323

Fabulous day. Fabulous host and teacher. I learnt so much on all aspects of fleeces, wool carding, spinning. Would really recommend you go along to this course.

Rachel Lumsden - - #6314

Just a quick thank you for yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed it! An ideal combination of information and hands on.
Thank you also (and your husband) for a good convivial lunch.
A lovely day all round.

Valerie - - #5491

Lots of individual attention from Elaine which led to fast progress. However many online videos or books you read it can't match learning off an expert. Shown how to set up my spinning wheel and help with problem solving so I could get it working properly (which it is now). Range of processes and skills shown and Elaine has a flexible friendly approach, thank you very much.

Jennie F - - #5198

A great day to learn the basics of hand spinning from choosing a fleece to the end product. Elaine was lovely and welcoming and as it is a small course with only 4 people there was plenty of opportunity for one to one help when needed.

Katie M - - #5075

Elaine was patient and a wonderful hostess. She welcomed us in to her home and was a delight to spend the day with! Having a small class meant we were able to have one-to-one help when we had problems. In just one day the group went from having little to no experience to walking out the door with a skein of yarn we spun ourselves! Elaine also went over the basics of what to look for when buying a fleece and how to prepare it. A great day!

Sarah Potter - - #5037

With just 4 people on the course, Elaine was able to spend plenty of time with each one of us, sorting out our problems ans setting us back on the right path. We covered everything from how to choose a fleece and what to do with it, through drop spindling before using a spinning wheel. Elaine provided a variety of fibres for us to try out. There really was nothing we weren't taught! A lovely day in a beautiful location.

Helen crowe - - #4967

We had a lovely day with Elaine. She was a perfect hostess and teacher - so incredibly patient.I now feel that I have got to grips with my spinning wheel and all I need to do now is practice....I learned so much from washing fleeces through to spinning yarn and to come away with a self made ball of yarn at the end of the day was a very satisfying bonus!

I spent a very enjoyable couple of days looking at the whole process of fleece to fibre, with an excellent teacher. Elaine moves through the material at a pace appropriate for her students. We had all done some spinning before but agreed we'd missed out key learnings and picked up bad habits. Elaine coped with all our issues, and took all our questions in her stride. The equipment provided meant we could all have a go at everything, including trying out some interesting modern wheels on which we made art yarn. Learning in a group is great fun, and as a bonus I made some new spinning friends.

Sarah - - #4737

We had a brilliant day learning the process of spinning using a drop spindle and spinning wheel. Elaine was very patient, encouraging and really knowledgeable and helpful. There was a range of different spinning wheels available for us to try which was great. It was a really enjoyable and informative day and brilliant to come away with yarn I had drafted, spun and plied myself. Loved it :)

Sally Tolley - - #4729

I had a lovely day on the spinning course, Elaine was indeed very patient with us. It was a lovely day spent learning a new craft. We were made to feel very welcome in her home .

Rebecca Lonsdale - - #4728

Myself and 2 friends had a wonderful time on this workshop. Elaine is very patient and explains the process of spinning very well. I well and truly have the spinning bug now I understand the process!

Carole Lloyd - - #4628

What a fantastic course. We had a full day with hands on from the moment we arrived until we left. Elaine made the day fun and relaxing and we could ask as many questions as we liked. I had not experience of spinning prior to this day and came away with my first spun yarn. I can highly recommend this course and look forward to being able to join in more in the future. Thank you so much for your instructions and book I have come away with.

Daisy - - #4581

Elaine put on an afternoon taster workshop in our bookshop which certainly attracted attention. The feed back from our customers was very positive and several of them booked onto courses. Others bought books!! Thanks for a successful collaboration.

Val - - #4484

Fantastic day. Learnt far more than I expected from fleeces to spinning . Elaine had so much patience. I was really pleased to be able to come home with my own spun yarn. I only wished the time didn't go so fast.

Rose - - #4460

A wonderfully creative day spent learning to spin, with Elaine an excellent, patient teacher. Delighted to come away with my very own handspun skein of wool, and with the confidence to build on the skills and techniques demonstrated on the day. Thanks!

Maggie T - - #4258

Elaine put on a special Family Day for me, my mum and sister which we all enjoyed enormously. We were (mostly) beginners and it was great to be able to learn together with a really knowledgeable and patient teacher. Thanks Elaine.

Angie Tyler - - #4193

An absorbing day with a truly knowledgeable and supportive tutor. I enjoyed learning so many things about fibre - and wool in particular, and was pleased to come away confident with my own new set of spinning skills. Recommended.

Jason Haine - - #4189

A thoroughly enjoyable day being creative. Elaine provides everything needed including plenty of one to one coaching and encouragement. Fantastic to work from fleece to yarn and taking home my own skein, held aloft Simba like, was the icing on the cake. Good company for the day in a relaxed atmosphere.

Sue Ball - - #4112

I attended the two day course and found it very informative and fun. It was really helpful to be able to try more than one style of wheel and not to feel rushed. Homemade soup for lunch was lovely - some fresh fruit would have been nice.

Heather Procter - - #4080

I thoroughly enjoyed this two day course and left feeling confident to wash, card and spin fleeces from my own sheep, which is what I had hoped for from the outset. Can't wait to get my own equipment and start producing!

Liz O'Driscoll - - #4076

Just completed a 2 day beginners course with Elaine and have throughly enjoyed it. I can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand how to spin. I have tried to spin before and could not get it, but finally this weekend I have mastered it and produced a skien of yarn really chuffed. Thank you Elaine.

Sharon White - - #3860

A fascinating day spent doing something new with a very knowledgeable tutor in a comfortable, homely setting. Lunch was lovely too.5 Came away with my very own hand-spun yarn, which I admire several times a day. Thank you Elaine, you have passed on the spinning "bug"!

Tina Pearsall - - #3857

If you want to learn to spin, this is the way to do it. In a Cosy, rural setting with a teacher who has all the answers as well as patience and enthusiasm. I ended the day with a skein of two ply yarn. OK, it was a bit lumpy but I was very proud of it and Elaine was very encouraging.

Val Seger-Bernard - - #3780

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the Beginners Hand Spinning course with Elaine. She was exceptionally patient and really thoughtful in her way of teaching me. I felt that she was trying hard to understand how I would learn and adapting her methods to help me 'get-it'. It is a lovely environment in which to learn. Lunch was lovely. I would highly recommend attending a course with Elaine if you are interested in learning more about fibre and spinning. She is most definitely an 'expert' :)

Angie - - #3771

Lovely day learning this absorbing craft in a superb setting with a patient and very knowledgeable teacher. What more could you want?

Cathy - - #3530

Elaine is patience personified - kind, helpful and fun with the most wonderful way of bringing the story of Rumpelstiltskin alive. As if by magic, beautiful skeins of wool appeared from nowhere. My efforts were somewhat more lumpy and erratic, but as a first timer I was pretty proud of the day's handiwork. And can't wait to try again.

Lesley - - #3442

Recently attended Elaine beginners spinning courses in her beautiful home. from the moment you arrive you are welcomed and the fun begins. Elaine's tuition is tailored to the individuals on the course, and her patience is remarkable while we fumble our way though hand eye foot and wool coordination but then the penny drops and you're away. We all left with handspun wool to show for our day. Thanks Elaine.

Danielle - - #3437

Excellent teacher. It was a very friendly atmosphere, I learned so much and had a wonderful time. Hopefully I'll get the chance to go on the more advanced course once I've got going with my own wheel.

Carly - - #3083

An excellent course with a very friendly and helpful teacher!

As a complete new comer to the world of spinning I had no idea if I would be able to do it or not. First we were taught on a drop spindle and for some reason, I just wasn't getting it, but Elaine was very patient with me and watched me and helped me to improve until it clicked. I was even able to improve and create my very first skein by the end of the day!

Wonderful and would definitely recommend!

Jo Brown - - #3047

Elaine came to my home to teach myself and a friend since we both have health issues. Elaine was great, very patient and taught us fantastically. My friend had no previous experience of spinning and is now buying her own drop spindle as she got bitten by the spinning bug in a big way :) I already had a bit of experience with the spindle but was self taught, it was interesting to see how a professional does it. Elaine taught me to use my spinning wheel which I could not get set up correctly. Since then I have spun almost every night and even done some plying of my yarns.
Elaine does a secondary/ intermediate course as well as beginners course. I am looking forward to going on her intermediate course in the future.
If you live in the north of England or are holidaying there I cant recommend Elaine highly enough to teach you

Morag Curtis - - #3013

I attended a bespoke spinning workshop with Elaine and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Elaine is very generous with her time and experience and has inspired me to work hard at improving my spinning technique. She is a great teacher and is patient and thorough with her explanations. I cannot rate this workshop highly enough. Thanks Elaine

Laney Warwick - - #2966

Finally I understand tensions! Feel I have moved forward in one enormous leap from spinning whatever comes out to actually creating something specific. Learned a lot one short day. Tranquil location, lovely friendly atmosphere, and great fun.

Jilly M - - #2965

Just loved this course. Never done anything like it before so thrilled to come home with my own skein - a bit bumpy - but ALL MINE!! Thanks to a very patient teacher.

Jane Davies - - #2926

Thanks Elaine for yet another inspiring day. I loved your special bespoke workshop as I really wanted to spend time just focusing on plying - getting it balanced and being creative. Now have lots of ideas for my new stash of fleeces!!

Wendy - - #2925

Elaine put on a special bespoke course for me which covered everything I really needed to know and more. Had a really useful day and covered some unexpected ground which made the whole experience worthwhile. Thanks. Recommended? Certainly.

Chris - - #2862

Took this course as a follow on having completed the Beginner's Course. Found it extremely useful in setting tension and drafting techniques to get the yarn I actually want to spin - not just what comes out. A fair amount of technical data to absorb but Elaine relates it to the end product making it more relevant. I feel fairly confident now about setting out to achieve my own ideals about yarn design.

Louise - - #2861

From a standing start knowing nothing this course ABSOLUTELY enthralled me. Learned so much in one day and had a super time in the process. Thank you so much for turning me into confident spinner.

Angela Dixon - - #2801

Had a wonderful time with Elaine. So much packed in to the course I learnt a lot about wool and how to spin using a spindle and spinning wheel. Elaine is patient and very encouraging making me feel proud of my achievement. Thanks Elaine you are very talented and I am eager to learn more.

Di Herriot - - #2671

A wonderful day with a fabulous teacher. Elaine is so knowledgeable and took a complete beginner to a relatively competent spinner in just 6 hours. Learnt so much and have a skein of my own spun wool which is just so satisfying! Thank you Elaine for your patience and expertise. Di x

Sue Sutherland - - #2559

Would definatley recomend this course to anyone who is thinking about having a go but not sure. Elaine is an excellent teacher, her knowledge is amazing and her patience outstanding. I'm hooked too and going to look at getting my own wheel to practice on. Lovely one to one tuition in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Happy spinning.

Chris - - #2390

Wow I'm totally hooked! Can't wait to get my hands on my own wheel and start spinning. Learned SO much the day absolutely flew by. Started with absolutely no idea what I was doing and finished up with my own skein - OK a bit lumpy and bumpy but all my own work. Brilliant.

Jacqui Wright - - #2258

A huge thank you to Elaine for sharing her knowledge with me.

Today I completed my beginners spinning course and am absolutely hooked! I'm now looking to buy my own wheel and looking foward to making lots of new friends.

Melanie Clarkson - - #2207

Spent a lovely day learning how to spin and lots more besides, Elaine is a great teacher, full of encouragement, which was especially nice for a complete novice like me! I would definitely recommend her courses, very friendly, informative and interesting.

Abby - - #2127

Thoroughly enjoyable and very interesting day. It was so lovely to be taught by someone so knowledgable and passionate. The spinning was challenging but very rewarding, and I am seriously considering buying a wheel. I've also enjoyed using my drop spindle at home since the course. I'd recommend this course.

Marlis - - #2020

An excellent day course, relaxed but informative and certainly got me spinning. Great fun to spin using a drop spindle initially and then finally manageing to use my own spinning wheel - aim achieved. Elaine is patient and provides excellent guidance and I have learned some useful 'spinning' language, sources of wool etc. and informative course notes to take away.

Jane Coward - - #1888

With no previous experience of spinning under Elaine's tutelage I was soon spinning. I enjoyed the whole day, made better with only 1 other pupil on the course which meant that if I needed help or guidance Elaine was there to assist me.
I would heartily recommend this course & Elaine whether you are inexperienced or wish to progress with spinning. I'm sure there is lots more to learn.

Lynn Young - - #1602

Absolutely loved my one to one beginners spinning day, I was amazed to find myself spinning on drop spindle within half an hour of meeting Elaine! She is truly inspirational, patient, friendly and funny. The time passed so quickly and I covered scouring the raw fleece, carding, spinning, plying, all terms I now understand! I brought home my own skein of wool! Brilliant day, really enjoyed it and cannot recommend it enough.

Bev Pearson - - #1568

An inspirational day! Elaine is very knowledgeable and the small teaching groups ensures there is an excellent level of support available throughout the day. I picked up lots of tips and was able to further develop my understanding of the principles of spinning. I gained a great deal of satisfaction from being able to take home my very first skein of yarn. Thank you Elaine, for an excellent day.

Sheila Dawson - - #1566

Brilliant day! Elaine is very welcoming, patient and helpful. She tailored her tuition to each individual's abilities while making sure the full range of basics was covered. Lots of tips, hints and practical help leaves me feeling a sense of achievement and inspired to carry on. If you are keen to learn, this is definitely the course for you.

I attended a day long course to gain confidence in spinning. I achieved my objective. Elaine is an excellent teacher, being thorough, supportive and knowledgeable.

Jacqueline Norman - - #1472

Really enjoyed the day, I have never done anything like this before. Elaine was very patient explaining everything, ( quite a few times for me ). I came away feeling that I knew a lot more than when I started. I am thinking of buying a wheel. Thanks Elaine, great.

Maggie Biddlestone - - #1448

The course covered all that it claimed it would.Elaine is obviously a committed spinner and her enthusiasm came across in her tuition. Being offered a range of wheels to spin from was helpful also. The day was very relaxed and we were given plenty of time to learn to spin.Unfortunately I personally found it a lot harder than it looks and need much more practise before I master the art!

catherine witt - - #1354

Had a lovely one to one session with Elaine, as a returning spinner. She was great - helpful, instructive, interested and motivational.
Look forward to doing more!

We have spent the evening looking at the possibility of buying our own wheel!

Charlotte Skelton - - #859

Brilliant! I went with no prior experience but Elaine made it easy and fun. I leanred a lot from this course and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start hand-spinning. As there is only 2 people on a course at any one time it means that you get one to one tuition. Thoroughly enjoyable! Thanks Elaine!

Lesley Ward - - #785

Very good day. Felt more like working with friends than being in class. Never spun before but I have now bought a wheel and have started working on my own fleeces. I feed as though I am gaining a skill and have gained a friend.

Lisa Reay - - #643

Fab course! I was a complete beginner and learned so much from Elaine's instruction. Highly recommended!
