Forge a Knife- Blacksmithing and Knifemaking Experience Day

X

Description

Let me guess: you've watched Forged in Fire, and now you want to have a go at making your own knife? "Will it cut?" Lets find out!

This course is perfect for anyone who would like to try their hand at Blacksmithing and Bladesmithing. You will learn the traditional techniques passed down through the ages for forging knives and many other edged tools, including forging, grinding, and heat treating to produce a blade that will stay sharp in use.

This one-day course is for one or two people to forge a single blade. If you'd like to attend as a pair and forge a blade each, two tickets will be required.

There is enough time to forge a blade with a maximum length of 6 inches. A kitchen knife is recommended and usually the most useful option for most people, as you can use it every day! Alternatively, you are welcome to bring with you ideas for the style of knife you'd like to make, including:
-Kitchen knife
-Hunting knife
-Bush craft knife
-Re-enactment knife
-Fishing knife
-Woodwork tool
... or anything else your imagination can conjure!

The Kerr Forge Blacksmith, Jon, will be alongside to help and advise at every step to ensure you take home a knife you are proud to use for a lifetime.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All the tools and materials required to make your knife will be provided. At the end of the course, you will take home a knife and a basic handle which will require tempering in your home oven (instructions will be provided) and gluing into the handle (glue will be provided). (Alternatively, if you'd like to make a knife with a handle consisting of scales, this is possible and rivets will be provided).

Knives will be made from highly durable high carbon steel which will last a lifetime with proper care.

Soft drinks, tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

For an additional charge, we can offer a homemade lunch.

Such a great experience, the day completely exceeded our expectations. Jon was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful, and immediately thought of ways to let us personalise our knife when we asked about engraving. We loved the day, it was so unique and we've come away with an amazing knife! Thankyou Jon! We'll definitely be back to add to the set!

Excellent day spent making a Japanese style cleaver with Jon - his expertise and knowledge really shone through and helped us to make a really unique but functional tool over the course of the day. Jon was incredibly friendly and kind and made sure that the day passed without issue, rectifying any mistakes we made but making sure that we were still fully in control of how the knife turned out. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking into it.

My husband did this course as I gifted it to him for his birthday. His review is as follows:

Jon gave me lots of options on what kind of knife to make, which was great. We worked hard all day and he was very informative and skilled. His wife's cooking was delicious and plentiful and we definitely worked up an appetite! Jon was a great teacher, amazingly patient with me, and helpful at every turn. Plus, he was just a great guy to chat with! Unbelievable experience! Highly recommend it to everyone interested.

In times when Blacksmiths were an integral part of any evolving and thriving community, the blacksmiths shop was a part of, if not, actually the very dwelling of the smith themselves.
So I was very excited and encouraged to see that Jon had not broke with the tradition and passion of having his forge within the confines of his dwelling, a sign that his passion for blacksmithing is integral to his way of life and family, just as it would have been… Cosy, independent and honest, not industrialised or corporate.

I highly recommend arriving with a sketch of the blade or piece you would like to create, as Jon will assist, over and above, to help you forge something incredible.

Thee best birthday gift ever.

Thank you Jon, we will be back.

Had an awesome day at Kerr forge! 100% worth the time and money. As a nerd, the best part was to finally find a real-life use-case for high school chemistry.

I would recommend this to anyone interested in forging a knife and gaining new skills.

Jon is an excellent, attentive and patient tutor and all round great company. I felt very welcome and comfortable from the minute I arrived. He is a very knowledgeable smith and tutor, he explained all the processes clearly so I understood what to do, how to do it and why I was doing it so I learned a lot and really feel I have gained a new skill!

Ultimately, all decisions are yours, and Jon is an excellent guide to offer advice and step in if need be. It’s a very fulfilling day experience and worth every penny to gain some insight into this beautiful craft.

And even better, I came home with an awesome knife that I forged myself and I’ll use for years to come!

Response from Kerr Forge:

Hi Mike,
Thanks so much for the kind words. It was an absolute pleasure working with you all day, and you should be really proud of your awesome knife.
Hope to see you again on a future course,
Jon

One of the best experiences of my life.
Jon is a great teacher, patient, and very knowledgeable.
He is also very passionate about blacksmithing, he knows a LOT so ask him a lot.
I started from a curved railway E- clip to finish with a fantastic knife.
The whole process is very well explained, we spent the whole morning forging the knife, after well-deserved lunch( prepared by Jon) we bevel it, heat treats it, and spent the remaining hours making and fixing the handle.
Jon let you use all tools, explaining how to use them but then he will let you use your own creativity to create your own knife.
He will advise you, of course, from time to time on the best way to do one step or the other.

I strongly recommend him and his course. You won't regret it.

ah, I almost forgot " It will cut !"

From start to finish this was the best experience day we have ever had, and worth every penny. You cram in so many techniques and tools whilst forging and get to understand what really goes into this craft. My Forged in Fire mad Dad has not stopped telling everyone about it.

You are in charge of every step of the process, Jon expertly guides you from the side lines and steps in if you need anything.

Jon is crazy knowledgeable and so wonderfully kind, the day with him flew by. I highly recommend this experience, you will have so much fun and get chance to unleash your inner blacksmith.

This was a great course. Jon is a knowledgeable and patient tutor, and makes sure you get stuck in to all of the processes, whilst understanding how and why they work. A lot goes into forging a knife, and the result is something durable and usable, and made by you. I'd highly recommend this, and I'll probably go back to make something else too.
