Let me guess: you've watched Forged in Fire, and now you want to have a go at making your own knife? "Will it cut?" Lets find out!
This course is perfect for anyone who would like to try their hand at Blacksmithing and Bladesmithing. You will learn the traditional techniques passed down through the ages for forging knives and many other edged tools, including forging, grinding, and heat treating to produce a blade that will stay sharp in use.
This one-day course is for one or two people to forge a single blade. If you'd like to attend as a pair and forge a blade each, two tickets will be required.
There is enough time to forge a blade with a maximum length of 6 inches. A kitchen knife is recommended and usually the most useful option for most people, as you can use it every day! Alternatively, you are welcome to bring with you ideas for the style of knife you'd like to make, including:
-Bush craft knife
... or anything else your imagination can conjure!
The Kerr Forge Blacksmith, Jon, will be alongside to help and advise at every step to ensure you take home a knife you are proud to use for a lifetime.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All the tools and materials required to make your knife will be provided. At the end of the course, you will take home a knife and a basic handle which will require tempering in your home oven (instructions will be provided) and gluing into the handle (glue will be provided). (Alternatively, if you'd like to make a knife with a handle consisting of scales, this is possible and rivets will be provided).
Knives will be made from highly durable high carbon steel which will last a lifetime with proper care.
Soft drinks, tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
For an additional charge, we can offer a homemade lunch.
8 hours (flexible times to suit)

Jon was a fantastic tutor and guided me through each step. It was a very professional course whilst being friendly and relaxed. Jon took time to talk through traditional methods and I came away with a new appreciation of the forging process as well as a lovely knife.
I would recommend this to anyone interested in forging a knife and gaining new skills.
Jon is an excellent, attentive and patient tutor and all round great company. I felt very welcome and comfortable from the minute I arrived. He is a very knowledgeable smith and tutor, he explained all the processes clearly so I understood what to do, how to do it and why I was doing it so I learned a lot and really feel I have gained a new skill!
Ultimately, all decisions are yours, and Jon is an excellent guide to offer advice and step in if need be. It’s a very fulfilling day experience and worth every penny to gain some insight into this beautiful craft.
And even better, I came home with an awesome knife that I forged myself and I’ll use for years to come!
Response from Kerr Forge:Hi Mike,
One of the best experiences of my life.
Jon is a great teacher, patient, and very knowledgeable.
He is also very passionate about blacksmithing, he knows a LOT so ask him a lot.
I started from a curved railway E- clip to finish with a fantastic knife.
The whole process is very well explained, we spent the whole morning forging the knife, after well-deserved lunch( prepared by Jon) we bevel it, heat treats it, and spent the remaining hours making and fixing the handle.
Jon let you use all tools, explaining how to use them but then he will let you use your own creativity to create your own knife.
He will advise you, of course, from time to time on the best way to do one step or the other.
I strongly recommend him and his course. You won't regret it.
ah, I almost forgot " It will cut !"
From start to finish this was the best experience day we have ever had, and worth every penny. You cram in so many techniques and tools whilst forging and get to understand what really goes into this craft. My Forged in Fire mad Dad has not stopped telling everyone about it.
You are in charge of every step of the process, Jon expertly guides you from the side lines and steps in if you need anything.
Jon is crazy knowledgeable and so wonderfully kind, the day with him flew by. I highly recommend this experience, you will have so much fun and get chance to unleash your inner blacksmith.
This was a great course. Jon is a knowledgeable and patient tutor, and makes sure you get stuck in to all of the processes, whilst understanding how and why they work. A lot goes into forging a knife, and the result is something durable and usable, and made by you. I'd highly recommend this, and I'll probably go back to make something else too.
I had a fantastic day making a lovely kitchen knife with Jon. Jon's forge is a brilliant work space and Jon's friendly, knowledgeable tuition makes the day incredibly enjoyable. I would 100% reccomended anyone thinking about giving this a go to book with confidence that you will have an excellent and worthwhile experience.
Response from Kerr Forge:Thanks Ian! It was a great day and lovely to work with you. You kitchen knife is awesome and I hope it serves you well for many many years!
