Eva Stacey reviewed: Stool making course at Sallerton Wood

"What an amazing 3 days we had making our stools! In a methodical way, Andy guided us through the process of cleaving the wood, carving and shaping it in order to produce a very treasured and functional stool which we are now proud owners of. Being immersed in our “work” and spending the whole time in the beautiful Sallerton wood was both invigorating and calming. We are looking forward to joining Andy and Jane next year for another adventure! Thank you so much for a fab experience! "

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thank you very much indeed, Eva, for your kind review. We are so pleased that you and Lesley enjoyed the course so much, and the experience of being in Sallerton Wood. We look forward to welcoming you back to Sallerton Wood when you return next year for another course. In the meantime, enjoy using your stool! "

Andrew reviewed: Chair making course at Sallerton Wood

"This was an excellent course. The tuition was superb, Andy’s approach was supportive and patient. He effectively combined group demonstrations with one-to-one guidance. As a novice to green woodworking Andy pitched things at a level that he knew was achievable for me but also sufficiently challenging allowing me to create a chair that I feel proud to have made. The drinks and lunch breaks in the woods allowed everyone to get to know each other and fostered a wonderful supportive environment amongst the participants. The woods are beautiful. I chose to ‘wild camp’ on site which again provided the opportunity to chat and get to know other participants giving the course more of a retreat atmosphere."

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thanks, Andrew, for that very positive review of your recent experience at Sallerton Wood. We are very pleased that you enjoyed the course so much, and also appreciated the company of others on the course. Thanks also for commenting on the woodland itself, and the wild camping available there. We hope that you enjoy the chair that you made for many years to come, and we look forward to seeing you again at Sallerton Wood if you choose to visit again. "

Arthur Hocking reviewed: Chair making course at Sallerton Wood

"Just finished the 8 day Large chair making course. Had a great time! Met some lovely people who i really got to know over the 8 days. Was a lovely way to slow down from the crazy pace of modern life. The atmosphere and setting is welcoming to everyone and you are fully submerged in the wilderness. You are shown what is capable to do with a froe, your hands and a little bit of patience. Andy was a brilliant teacher and his wife Jane makes the best home made elderflower cordial! "

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thank you very much indeed, Arthur, for your kind comments. We're very pleased that you enjoyed the course, its tuition, and the natural woodland environment in which it took place. Jane will be very pleased to see your comment about the elderflower cordial too! We look forward to seeing you back at Sallerton Wood if you choose to visit us again in the future. In the meantime, enjoy the lovely chair that you made. "

Steve reviewed: Make a shave horse at Sallerton Wood

"A thoroughly enjoyable and interesting course in which you learn a lot of greenwood skills while making your own traditional English shavehorse. Andy is very knowledgeable and skilled in his craft and delivers the course in an engaging and highly patient manner. The venue is a fabulous woodland setting complete with a well equipped and well laid out working area. The site also has a great rest area complete with rocket stoves and clay oven. Wild camping is available and is highly recommended. If anyone is thinking of attending a make your own shavehorse course, I wholeheartedly recommend Andy’s course. I’m looking forward to going on some of his other courses soon. "

Nick P reviewed: Make a shave horse at Sallerton Wood

"This course was inspirational, I have been looking forward to it for a long time and I was not disappointed. Andy is a fantastic teacher ensuring that we all acquired the necessary skills in a gentle and positive way, giving enough guidance but not so much that learning opportunities were lost. Even in the rain Sallerton Wood was a dreamy place with Andy's structures blending in perfectly. I now really have the green woodworking bug and am planning my very own bodger's shelter to be followed by a pole lathe. I will be booking an 8 day chair course next as I would love to learn about steam bending"

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thank you very much indeed, Nick, for that kind review; much appreciated. We're delighted that you enjoyed the course so much. Glad to hear that you like the timber-framed structures at Sallerton Wood that have been made for the courses there. We look forward to welcoming you back to Sallerton Wood for a chair-making course. In the meantime, enjoy using the shave horse that you made on the recent course at Sallerton Wood. "

Andy T reviewed: Greenwood carving at Sallerton Wood

"This is one course you will not want to miss. Whether beginner or practiced you will know so much more than when you arrived. Andy is probably the most knowledgeable woodsman I have met in nearly 35 years of carpentry. Andy and Jane were the the best of hosts, providing both delicious lunches and snacks and story telling over coffee. All I need now is an excuse to return in the near future."

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thank you very much indeed for that very enthusiastic review, Andy. We are delighted that you enjoyed your experience at Sallerton Wood so much, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Sallerton Wood when you return for another course. "

Andy is the perfect teacher, never too fast or too slow, and always there to help. This is an essential course for anyone who would like to start dabbling in green woodworking. The setting is perfect and the food is great. I wimped out of wild camping though! Daniel reviewed: Introduction to green woodwork course at Sallerton Wood

"Sallerton Wood is a truly magical place and Andy is it's wizard. I was gifted this course and I honestly could not have asked for a better gift. I had done a whittling course before and that doesn't even come close to how great this was. I truly left feeling connected to nature, educated and feeling reset by this wonderful place. Would love to return again and build upon what Andy taught so well. Thank you for a fantastic day and having me in your slice of the outdoors."

Sallerton Wood responded:

Rachel reviewed: Greenwood carving at Sallerton Wood

"I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend at Sallerton Wood on the Kuksa course - a great introduction to green woodworking and satisfying to make the kuksa (looking forward to using it for my morning cuppa!) The woods are lovely and Andy and Jane are friendly, welcoming and relaxed. All tools and materials (plus a delicious lunch) were provided and Andy took us through the process, including tool sharpening, and was always on hand to answer questions or advise on next steps. It was also really interesting to hear how the wood is being managed and spaces created both for green woodworking and for wildlife."

"Thank you very much for your very positive review, Rachel. It is very good of you to put your thought and time to this, and also to comment on the wider aspects of the environment at Sallerton Wood. Adrian Jowitt reviewed: Stool making course at Sallerton Wood

"I attended the stool making course recently. It was my first attempt at green wood making and the course was superb. The location was amazing, the wood really well looked after and the buildings made from materials harvested from the wood and in a way that meant they blended in rather than imposed themselves on the site. Andy is a really good teacher, provides guidance and clear advice, giving space for us to get on and do our making but there when needed; if only I'd had a few more teachers like that at school. I highly recommend this course and Sallerton wood generally."

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Thanks very much indeed, Adrian, for writing that account of your experience at Sallerton Wood. We're delighted that you enjoyed the course and the woodland environment in which it took place. Thanks also for your recommendation to others, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Sallerton Wood if you choose to visit again. In the meantime, enjoy for greenwood stool!"

Paul reviewed: Introduction to green woodwork course at Sallerton Wood

"Andy is a skilled and very patient tutor, taking absolute beginners through to producing 3 things to take home! The setting is idyllic in his own wood, where greenwood crafting is demonstrated surrounded by birdsong and buzzards calling. Using satnav will not necessarily get you to the right spot, but it's a great journey in many ways. Thoroughly enjoyed the day."

Sallerton Wood responded:

"Many thanks, Paul, for your kind review. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the day's course and its natural environment and birdsong. Thanks also for your comments about tutoring. Many thanks for your support, and it would be good to see you back at Sallerton Wood one day. "

"I recently did a 1-day introduction to green working. It was an amazing day in a fantastic setting. Andy is a skilled woodworker, with the ability to teach and enthuse. I learnt and realised so much about working with greenwood without the need for power tools. Andy demonstrated we really can work without electricity. Really enjoyed the day! Also thank you to Jane for a nice heathy lunch."

Karen Turner reviewed: Stool making course at Sallerton Wood

"Oh my word what an amazing time my husband and I had making stools in the woods. Andy is a fantastic teacher, very calm and knowledgeable. I was so nervous, but as soon as we arrived in the woods, and had meandered down to the clearing, I already felt calm and relaxed. We were greeted with tea and biscuits, and after brief introductions to the other participants, we were off to the open air (but covered!) workshop. A fantastic 3 days, excellent company, great food, oodles of tea and biscuits, fab teacher. If you look at the photos and think - I’ll never be able to do that. Really you can, we did."

"This is absolutely the best course I have ever been on. Andy is a patient teacher, expertly sharing his skills to guide you through making a chair.
