Torso / Figure Sculpture in clay: 1 day course from life

X

Description

Spend a day creating a torso or figure sculpture. Sculpt in water-based clay, using direct observation of a life model. (Choose your torso or figure armature upon arrival.) Poppy will provide you with one-on-one critique and, as a group, you will cover a range of topics including working from life, setting a pose, relating the armature, and how to establish proportions. 3-4 participants required for this course to run.

What's included in the price?

Life model and water-based clay will be provided. Hardwood modelling tools on loan for those without their own, and a “take home” armature so that you can continue sculpting at home. (If you have a preferred medium such as plastilina, wax or air-drying clay, you are most welcome to bring that instead. I recommend bringing 2kg.) On reopening after Lockdown 3, my priority continues to be ensuring the wellbeing of the life-model and course participants. This requires that the government reinstates the Rule of Six for indoor groups (currently road-mapped for 17th May). To this end, I am currently implementing the following measures to keep the studio safe: - Deep cleaning prior to each workshop. - Model stands and “take-home” armatures disinfected. - Prepared and disinfected 2kg bags of water-based clay. - Prepared and disinfected individual packs ft. tea, coffee, fruit, cereal bars etc. - Appropriate distance between students' and model’s stands. Lunch can be provided upon request. It prepared by a local cook, Pippa Huges. Pippa’s menu (which is adaptable to any dietary restrictions / preferences) costs £18.00 for two courses or £25.00 for three courses. Her example menu (subject to seasonal change / dietary requirements) is: - Starters: Melon, tomato and prosciutto salad or tomato and burrata salad - Mains: Teriyaki salmon with rice noodle and cucumber salad or Sticky Asian pork belly with coconut rice and pickled vegetables - Pudding: Salted caramel brownie or, lemon and ginger cheese cake

Poppy is a figurative sculptor. She works from a private studio on Lavender Hill in London. Poppy graduated from the Courtauld in 2016 and trained in figurative sculpture at The Florence Academy of Art. During her time in Italy, Poppy gave lectures on the History of Art and was awarded a QEST Scholarship, a Leverhulme Trust Study Abroad Studentship and the FAA’s Graduate in Residence Prize for sculpture. In 2019, Poppy's first life-size sculpture was commissioned in bronze, and she returned to the UK to set up her studio. In 2021, Poppy won her first public commission: two-metre bronze monuments of Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. These were recently installed in niches on The Royal Albert Hall's South Porch façade.
