Summer Term Creative Jewellery Course - Wednesday Evening

X

Description

Join Teresa Crickmar this April for a thirteen-week jewellery & silversmithing course. Due to the small class sizes of six your tutor is able to support you at your pace and skill level. Your friendly tutor will guide you through all the basics including how to make a stone set ring, a hammered chain necklace and even a beautiful fold-formed pendant. Inspiration for projects is offered beforehand, however students are encouraged to work creatively and design their own pieces for themselves, loved ones or to sell. Weekly demonstrations and handouts are given and include all the basics as well as techniques such as piercing metal, Keum Boo, granulation and soldering techniques. Optional half termly group projects are suggested and have included sand casting, fabricating a brooch pin, forged bangle and enamelling. Refreshments are offered through the class including sweet treats, cold drinks, tea, fresh coffee, and a vast selection of herbal teas. The first week or so is used as a complete beginner’s session or as a catch up to remember past skills. You will learn about the basic jewellers' tools, how to use them to mark, measure, cut, file, texture, form, and solder work. These skills will then help you to know what is possible and you can order silver for the following weeks. Teresa is a sought-after tutor. She creates a fun, relaxed atmosphere to learn in and oozes positivity. Learners join her classes a little unsure and sometimes lacking confidence with the skillset or creative elements but quickly become attached to jewellery-making with her enthusiasm for all things fire, metal, and sparkle. You will gain the skills to make beautiful, professional-looking work that will receive plenty of compliments. These courses encourage you to develop your design skills and as important as the making process so if you have ideas or are inspired by others work, please share this before you start so that she can adjust the course content. Small, tailored courses give you just what you need. Your dedicated tutor will give you an idea of the materials and processes needed right from the outset before you even start making! Previous experience is not necessary however you are expected to be able to safely navigate the workshop environment and have the manual dexterity to use saws and torches. YOUR TUTOR You can see Teresa Crickmars work locally in Primavera Gallery, Cambridge and she opens her workshop space for Cambridge Open Studios for weekends in July. FAQs

Everything you will need is here, however if you use reading glasses for close up work, don't forget them. Some students find it useful to bring a notebook to sketch and make notes. Following a conversation on the first week you will be encouraged to order your silver and stones for following lessons with guidance of what, where and when.

Yes the number 11 stops just 2 minutes walk away and runs from Cambridge to Newmarket and back.

A good level of hand-eye coordination is needed to complete fine work using torches, saws and electronic motors. You will need to be able to move safely in a workshop environment and be able to follow clear instructions easily. You must adhere to the health and safety aspects of using the equipment as demonstrated.

Of course, this means you haven't learned any bad habits! You are most welcome and it will not be long before you're making beautiful work.
