Description

In this workshop you can pick between 2 of our most popular classes. If you want to make Stacking Rings - You will create a set of three stacking rings from your choice of a selection of available metals including silver, copper and brass. Creating a set of stacking rings is a brilliant way to play with textures as you will have 3 separate rings and each one can be different. You will be shown how to use a blow torch safely and learn the art of soldering metal. You will learn traditional techniques throughout the course as follows: • Accurate measuring, calculating, and cutting to a correct size. • Annealing. • Soldering. • Texturing. • Shaping and forming. • Finishing If you want to make a Personalised Ring - You will learn to make a solid silver ring to your own unique design using hammers and stamping with hand punches to decorate. You will learn how different hammers create different marks and the accuracy needed for the hand punches. You will first be given a copper strip to practice the various techniques on, before moving onto your silver ring. In addition to learning the 6 techniques above, if you choose to make the personalised ring you will also be taught the intricate art of how to use hand punches to decorate your ring. The workshop is equally suitable for students who have not done a workshop with Bigbury Mint before or who already have some basic jewellery making skills. At the start of the course, you will be shown examples of stacking rings and personalised rings and you can choose which you would like to make (please note you must choose one or the other, there would not be time to make both in one workshop). *** All silver supplied is recycled 925 EcoSilver *** Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult. *NB. We can only accommodate students enrolled on the course to be in the building. Your workshop will be run by our Silversmith Vicky - Your tutor, Vicky, has been designing and making jewellery since 2012 when she studied at Penwith School of Art in Cornwall. The first tap of a hammer ignited a passion for jewellery making which has seen her complete a degree and set up her own small business. Over the past few years, she has enjoyed teaching the art of jewellery making at Bigbury Mint. Clothing & Safety- Your Safety is our priority: Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, aprons can be worn. No scarves, shorts, miniskirts/dresses as legs need to be covered and no flipflops, open-toed sandals or open-toed shoes are allowed in the workshop. Hair must be tied up. Bigbury Mint has two distinct aspects to the business – Bigbury Mint Jewellery & Bigbury Mint Medals. Both operate from our traditional metal workshops in Devon and whilst the products for each are very different, much of the equipment, skills and techniques are common across the two sides of the business. The jewellery side produces artisan jewellery and inspirational metal gifts, including necklace pendants, cufflinks, paperweights, christening spoons, earrings, brooches, and sculptures, which are sold through our shop in Ermington, via our website and through our Etsy and Folksy online shops. Most of our jewellery is made in solid silver (recycled 925 Eco Silver), some is made in copper and brass, and we have a range of unique heritage items made from recycled Cornish and Devon Tin ingots. We also provide jewellery-making classes covering a wide range of jewellery-making techniques. The Medal side of the business is MOD licensed to make replica military medals and also produces medals on commission for a very wide variety of organisations including Sandhurst Military Academy, Dartmouth Royal Naval College, the Royal Horticultural Society, East Midlands Ambulance Trust and many more. We also produce commemorative medals ranging from Bevin Boys Medals to Platinum Jubilee Medals – and our newest product will be a commemorative medal and medallion to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.
