Machine knitting beginners workshop with TheaRose - learning the basics

Description

This is a one day workshop 9.30am - 4pm where you will learn the basics of using a Brother domestic knitting machine. The course size is a maximum of three students per workshop. This workshop will be held at the fabulous home studio of TheaRose Designs at the foot of the Quantock and Exmoor hills. A fantastic setting for a relaxing and inspiring day. Tutor: Thea is a Textile Lecturer with a specialism in knitwear design and knitted textiles. She is a graduate of Nottingham Trent University and Winner of the Graduate Fashion Week Visionary Knitwear Award. Thea loves working with colour and pattern to create unique and inspiring knitted designs. You will learn: - Setting up the machine and tools needed - How to cast on and off - Yarns needed and tension advice - Colour combination ideas and choosing colour palettes for projects - Changing colours and stripe formations - Steaming and using hand sewing techniques to finish off your end product - Instructions and notes on the techniques learnt during the day as well as a list of suppliers for future projects and top tips when buying your own domestic knitting machine will be provided. What you will achieve: With the skills learnt you will design and make one or more small knitted items including a lavender bag filled with Somerset lavender, a coin purse with button fasten and a sunglasses case. You will also have a small selection of samples to take home for inspiration for your next project. You will be shown how to create these products and all the processes needed so you will go home with a lovely product for yourself or as a gift for someone special. At the end of the workshop you will be confident in using a domestic knit machine and be able to continue completing mini projects at home on your own machine. After completing this workshop you could improve and develop your skills and knit knowledge by signing up to one of Thea’s more advanced workshop courses.

What's included in the price?

Each student will have their own domestic knit machine to use for the day along with the equipment and materials needed for the workshop. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the day. Please bring your lunch as there are no shops nearby.

"Very much enjoyed this ‘taster’ introductory day to knitting machines. Thea was a lovely teacher, very patient and helped me out of some rather scrappy work. Producing the two cute items was an accomplishment, even though by the end of the day I was very tired. Having never even seen a knitting machine before, this introductory day would be a great litmus test for anyone thinking of buying a knitting machine. I would thoroughly recommend this day. "I had a lovely day with Thea, being reminded of the procedures and equipment to use a Knitting machine after many years of non- use. Although The Sat-Nav could not find the address, Thea was kindly waiting outside for me after the friendly assistance of neighbours. The work room was well equipped with three machines, various coloured yarns, tools, ironing board and tools, instruction booklet to keep and illustrations of previous projects completed. The venue was also Covid safe too. I was even able to bring my little dog, who has anxiety issues. She was very quiet however, which was a great relief for her. We had lunch in an adjacent lovely glass room and coffee and cake outside in the garden (as it was warm) provide by her mum. I achieved making two small projects and shared information about common interests. It was a glorious and fulfilling day and would really recommend this to other people making their first launch into machine knitting."

"As a total novice and never having done machine knitting before I didn’t know what to expect. However the day with Thea was amazing! The workshop is light and bright with roomy workstations and everything needed to enjoy the day and have fun. Right from the word go Thea explained things clearly and patiently and even provided a comprehensive booklet to help along with the process and to take away. I am delighted that I created and I came away with two completed bright and beautiful items - a lavender bag and a coin purse. I wholeheartedly recommend this course."
