Introduction to Shibori dyeing with natural Indigo.

X

Description

During this workshop you will create a beautiful hand dyed scarf and discover the joy of dyeing with natural Indigo using Shibori resist dye techniques to create a range of fascinating surface pattern designs. You will learn how to create an indigo dye vat and explore different Japanese Shibori techniques, a method translating to wring, squeeze or bind, manipulating fabric to produce a pattern. You will be introduced to Indigo as a natural plant dye derived from Indigofera Tinctoria and how to create a dye vat. We will be using a non toxic/eco friendly dye vat and organic cotton or hemp cloth which will be dipped, often repeatedly, in the vat to produce a wonderful range of blue hues. We will explore different Shibori techniques of pole wrapping (Arashi), clamping (Itajime), stitching (Nui) and binding (Kumo) to create fascinating surface pattern designs. This will be a fun, experimental workshop where you will practise a few different techniques before going on to dye a scarf to take home with you, along with all your samples. Wear suitable clothing that you don't mind getting a bit messy. Tea, coffee, biscuits and homemade cake will be provided throughout. Free parking on site.

I have been an artist for over 25 years with a specific interest in Japanese art and culture. This led me to discover the traditional crafts of Kintsugi, the repairing of broken pottery with gold, Shibori, indigo resist dyeing and Kurinuki single block clay carving. I love the meditative effect of these traditional crafts and the unique and often surprising results they produce. My little studio/workshop opened in 2021 and is situated in a converted stable in the grounds of Wolvey Hall, a Grade II listed building. The perfect place for creativity.
