Description

Encaustic tiles have been popular throughout history and span periods from the Middle Ages to Victorian times. Used primarily in areas where there was heavy footfall as the design goes through the depth of the tiles rather than sits on the top of the surface, therefore even when the tile becomes worn the design is still visible. Traditionally encaustic tiles use a mould and two colours of clay, the base colour being moulded first with the design stamped out in recess and filled with a contrasting coloured slip, left to dry and then whittled to reveal the design. This is quite a lengthy process, however a few years ago Geri and a potter friend developed a way of getting the same result in a much quicker process enabling results to be revealed in a session of 2 hours. You will be using white and terracotta clay to produce your tiles. Ready made stamps will be provided and students will be able to make their own designs using combinations of these. Work will be fired and glazed or polished according to the students preference.

FAQs

I can arrange to book a larger workshop room at Parnella House or book a larger venue off site or for bigger groups or even come to you.

Yes you are welcome to book for the session. The studio has 4 wheels so if you have a larger group 4 people can be throwing at a time and other members can be engaged in another activity such as decorating pre thrown pot.
