Description
Step back in time and discover the ancient craft of medieval stained glass painting in this relaxed and inspiring two-day course with glass artist Jo Turner. Held in my light-filled studio at Bank Vale Mill in the heart of Hayfield, this workshop introduces you to the traditional art of ‘painting with light’, focusing on the medieval period when stained glass flourished between 1150–1500 AD. You’ll explore the designs, materials, and tools used by medieval glaziers and learn how to trace, shade, and apply silver stain to your glass before firing it in the kiln. Once your painted glass pieces are fired, you’ll move on to create a small leaded panel, learning how to cut glass to a design, lead, solder, and cement your finished work — ready to take home and treasure. Throughout the course, there will be live demonstrations, plenty of hands-on practice, and lots of tips and insights. Expect a relaxed, creative atmosphere with time to chat, ask questions, and immerse yourself in this beautiful heritage craft. Classes are small (max 4 people) so everyone gets individual attention and plenty of studio time. Please wear closed-toe shoes; due to the use of lead, the course isn’t suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please note that the glass needs to be fired (to 650 degrees), this takes time as there is an alchemy going on in the kiln and then to be cooled in a controlled manner therefore there will be some down-time during the course. During this time we will be setting up for the next phase or perhaps you may have time for a lovely walk and explore of the beautiful village of Hayfield.

We are really sorry but there is no disabled access and the studio is accessed via a staircase onto the first level. This is due to the age of the building and it's former use as a paper mill.
The post code is SK22 2HB. The Mill is not visible from the road, turn into the gravel carpark at the river, you will see the gates. Drive through the gates and you will be in the mill grounds. There is a metal door round the back, immediately leading to stairs to the studio. The house is private property so please phone me if you are in doubt.
Yes. There is a small car park directly in the mill grounds and another area to park cars next to the river, just before the mill gates.
