Bladesmithing - One day

Description

One or two days in a forge, learning the basics of hand forging a knife. An intensive, but fun course that is designed to give a taste of every step of the process. Including basic blacksmithing, managing fire, using a hammer, forging, handling & heat treatment. Using a mix of both traditional and modern techniques you will create a tool that lasts a lifetime. This course is only offered to those over the age of 18. During this course we will cover the following: - One day course. - Introduction to the workshop, tools and forge, safety. - Learning to light, and manage a Japanese style sword forge. - Forge a knife using a pre made carbon steel blank. - Grinding and rough shaping. - Heat treatment & tempering. - Final grinding. - Handling into a single wood handle blank. - Sharpening using whetstones. Please note: as this is aimed to be completed in one day, this course includes less forging time than a two day course, using a pre made knife blank by me that you will finish hand shaping in the fire, and a simple, single wood handle. Duration - up to 10 hours. You will be working with temperatures exceeding 1000c in a small space, so care must be taken and appropriate safety must be followed, however, it is generally quite safe in the forge, as long as you are careful and follow guidance. All PPE is provided, including gloves when necessary, safety glasses, and a leather apron. You are required to wear cotton or denim trousers, closed boots or shoes, and ideally a long sleeve cotton shirt. Please do not wear synthetic clothing, as it melts under contact with heat or sparks and is not safe in this environment. If you wear unsuitable clothing we cannot continue with the course. As my workshop is relatively small, I only offer my courses on a one to one basis and I am unable to offer this course to anyone under the age of 18 years old. You must be fit and healthy and able to deal with some heat, dust and noise. On the day please bring suitable clothing as mentioned above, lunch and water. I will provide hot drinks and snacks.
