Powertex Robin on a spade handle - Fabric Sculpture - by Inky Escapades

X

Description

Step into a creative, hands-on experience and sculpt a charming 3D robin perched on a spade handle, using the wonderfully versatile medium of Powertex. This workshop is open to anyone with a reasonable level of dexterity—no previous experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to play. Once fully cured, your robin will be weather-resistant and perfectly at home in the garden. A light spray of clear satin sealer is recommended, allowing you to gently brush away spider webs and nature’s traces over time. I’ll guide you through the entire journey, beginning with the creation of the armature, then layering fabric and delicate recycled fabric feathers to bring your bird to life. At times we’ll reach for tweezers to place those tiny, expressive details. You’ll then discover how to colour your robin using pigments and a water-based varnish—this is the moment where the piece truly transforms and the magic unfolds. Along the way, you’ll be introduced to the enchanting world of Powertex: a water-based, non-toxic, environmentally friendly medium that blurs the line between paint and glue. It hardens fabric, making it possible to create expressive 2D and sculptural 3D forms with strength and permanence. Sustainability sits at the heart of my practice. Wherever possible, I work with recycled and repurposed materials—natural-fibre fabrics sourced from charity shops, fragments of broken jewellery, and found objects given new purpose and new stories. All materials are provided, including gloves and aprons, as Powertex is delightfully messy and endlessly creative. I’ll be creating the piece alongside you, guiding each stage so you can see the process unfold in real time. Workshops begin at 10am. Once the wet work is complete, we pause to let the sculpture dry before moving into the colouring phase—often everyone’s favourite part. Occasionally, sessions may drift up to an hour beyond the scheduled finish, so please allow a little extra time when booking. Inky Escapades is run by Karen Hewitt, Artist, & Certified Powertex tutor in Fabric Sculpting, Stone Art Clay, Mixed Media and 3D Flex. My Powertex workshops will give you a window into your own personal creativity. I will offer you the tools and instruction to create fabulous works of art; beware though as Powertex is a very addictive hobby and you may find yourself consumed by its magic. Most materials used are recycled. I offer small workshops for up to 4 people or 1 to 1 by arrangement.
