Maker's bio

As a wildlife biologist and woodland firefighter for the last decade, the best part of my job was teaching others the wonders of wild spaces. The tools and traditions of living close to nature are as wondrous as natural spaces themselves. My passion for the natural world shifted from the growth of flora and fauna to how we as humans grow in wild areas. I now focus on working with young people and adults, specialising in green woodworking, spoon carving, wilderness skills and bushcraft, with nature based well-being at the centre of all I do. I primarily teach sloyd workshops and wilderness education programmes. I have experience with SEN individuals as well as other mental and spiritual health difficulties. For me, the natural world and its materials are a source of grounding. I am an avid outdoorsman, angler, green woodworker, and new father. I strive to find creative and impactful ways to help people connect with themselves and the natural world through making.

Bradley-Howard Monk reviewed: Spoon Carving at Wilderness Foundation UK

"A great day with a great teacher. Max talked to us and showed us not only how to do it but why we do it. He started with a talk about the background of Sloyd and then showed us the wood and talked us through the different properties that you need to be aware of when making a spoon, before leading us through all of the steps. I had previously watched videos online, but the day spent with Max was so much more worthwhile. In fact we were so engaged we forgot lunch and I didn't even notice how sunburnt my knees were until I got home! I would certainly recommend the course for anyone interested in learning this craft. "I booked this event as a gift for my Mum for me, my brother and Mum to do together. And I’m so glad I did. It was genuinely one of the best experiences I’ve done and would highly recommend it. Max is extremely talented, a fantastic teacher and a kind person. What made the whole day so special was how relaxed it was and how comfortable we all felt. I can’t believe we started the day with a piece of tree (with the bark!) and ended up with a wooden spoon we could actually use. It took a lot of hard work chopping and concentration with the knife but I’m really proud of what I did. Max did a great job explaining and showing the different techniques so we could do it all ourselves, but if we needed some extra help he quickly helped us catch up. I bought this just as something fun for us to do as a family but I found the experience so rewarding and relaxing that I’ve actually got myself a couple of the tools so I can do some more. And I think my brother will too. Thank you Max for the most fantastic day - a really memorable and enjoyable experience! 💚"

"What a great workshop! From beginning to end, thoroughly enjoyed every minute! Max is a great teacher, guiding us through each step of spoon carving with heaps of knowledge, kindness and patience, especially as we’ve never done any form of carving before. The workshop space is tranquil, the food was delicious and super happy with our spoon and spatuloon 😂. Both me and my husband had a fantastic time and would highly recommend. To say this workshop is good value for money is an understatement! Honestly can't thank Max enough for a great day, a great experience, and a great first dip into wood carving, leaving us wanting to do more."
