Delightful Decay: Windows and Doorways

X

Description

Using a variety of acrylic pastes, aggregates and collage we will work through a series of stages creating layers and textures to represent rough, distressed and decaying surfaces. Having constructed an interesting base we will then work in a combination of washes, thicker paint and drawn marks to create an atmospheric image, adding more detail as needed, sanding and wiping back through paint layers and building a complex surface. A fun day with plenty of demos and step-by-step instruction. What to bring: Heavy watercolour paper (approx. 350gsm or heavier) or mountboard / back of sketchpad (painted white if you’re using this) – you may wish to bring several pieces to work on together to allow stages to dry. Lightweight textured papers /tissue paper /book pages etc (whatever you have – we will be using it to create texture & pattern) Drawing pencil; Water-soluble pencils / crayons / oil pastel if you have them (don’t buy especially – tutor will bring some) Acrylic matt medium (the gel sort, not the fluid medium– Winsor & Newton, Pebeo & Liquitex all make one) or waterproof PVA Acrylic paints – whatever you have – if buying specially just buy primary colours and white Note: It is possible to achieve most of the things we will be covering with watercolours if you don’t have acrylics – please also bring a tube of white gouache Mixing palette, brushes (whatever you have), glue brush Kitchen roll, water pot, scissors Hairdryer if you have one Inspiration / source material of old windows and doorways (tutor will also bring some images)
