A perfect introduction to hand tool woodworking, this course will give you the knowledge and skills to be able to use a core set of hand tools by teaching you a range of skills in how to cut wood with confidence. The skills and techniques you will learn will, with practice, allow you to go on to make a vast array of furniture for your home. Woodworking starts with knowing how to saw, chisel and plane with accuracy. You will be introduced to these three extremely versatile hand tools and shown how to use each of them correctly. Using just three tools you will be able to to cut to a straight line, plane an edge square, chisel out basic joints and add decorative bevels and round overs. At the end of the course you will have made a basic wooded box - the first step on your woodworking journey. The course is run from our small workshop in the heart of Weardale in County Durham, a stunning remote part of the country with dramatic landscapes and varied wildlife in abundance. The workshop overlooks a beautiful and calming nature reserve which is home to a wild array of flora and fauna. Our location provides an extra dimension of relaxation and escapism from the world where you can focus on the calming simplicity of hand tool woodworking. You will be shown how to cut basic joinery components as well as learn tips and tricks of the trade to ensure your hand tool woodworking is accurate and effortless. At the end of your course, you will leave with your test board you have been working on that will proudly show off all the techniques you have learned through the day, you will also possess simple hand tool woodworking skills that will last a lifetime. Learn to saw, chisel and plane with confidence, discover different joinery techniques and have an opportunity to try more specialist hand tools

FAQs

You will be using ANH Artisan’s tools during the course which will have been sharpened and prepared prior to your arrival. Unfortunately, you cannot use your own tools during the course as they may not be sharpened and set up safely and correctly for the day and we will not have time to prep additional kit. However if you have your own woodworking tools that you want to bring for advice on how to use them or set them up/sharpen then please do so, but they will be your responsibility to look after and ensure they are safely stored

The workshop is located within a former quarry which means some of the paths can be a little uneven underfoot. The workshop is accessed via a long ramp and we have accessible toilet facilites to the rear of the workshop. Our aim is to make our courses available to every woodworker, however please be aware the nature of the work we undertake duing the courses can be physically challenging, therefore if you have any questions or concerns regarding accessibility please get in touch and we can discuss how to accomodate your needs.
