Maker's bio

The Urban Crafts Foundation is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company based at Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Education in Essex. Our fully equipped blacksmiths forge is designed so that we can efficiently teach and carry out commissioned work. We offer classes to members of the public in blacksmithing, coppersmithing and other crafts that we try to keep affordable. These in turn allow us to run subsidised workshops with young people facing challenges that stop them from thriving in mainstream education.

Hayley & James reviewed: Make a copper bowl

"Lizzie was absolutely fantastic both before and during the course. I had requested whether the 'Make a Copper Bowl' course ever took place on a Saturday instead of a Sunday to work around personal commitments, and she very kindly changed the date of the weekend I had in mind to a Saturday! Shortly before we were due to take the course, James broke his leg and was left unable to weight-bear, and we were concerned about whether this blacksmithing course would be at all possible given his condition, or whether it would be a case of rebooking or possibly even losing the money on the booking, given the short notice. Lizzie couldn't have been kinder, calling me to discuss arrangements for James, offering to either rebook to a later date or put a plan in place for the original date to make things easier for him. We were able to park much closer than normal to the venue, James was sat closest to the entrance/furthest away from the non-mobile blacksmithing tools so that he didn't represent a trip hazard to the other participants, and Lizzie even had some mobile blacksmithing tools so that James could take part fully whilst sitting down instead of having to stand at the different devices. We had a fantastic time, and are so grateful for all Lizzie did! Thank you so much, and we wish you all the best for the future! "

David Owen and Elspeth Owen reviewed: Make a copper bowl

"The course was excellent - the teaching clear and interesting and the practical clearly demonstrated and safely executed. We left with a lovely hammered copper bowl each and enthusiasm to try more copper work. A wonderful way to spend a day in lovely company whilst learning some new crafting skills."

Ella reviewed: Blacksmithing taster session at Urban Crafts Foundation

"A fantastic course which I 100% recommend. Lizzy taught me a range of different techniques and skills needed to make a fire poker. We chatted about differences in coal and gas forges, equipment needed and how to stay safe in the forge. I learnt so much. Thank you again and hope to see you in the future to develop more skills."

Urban Crafts Foundation responded:

"Thanks so much and hope to see you again soon!"
