Maker's bio

I have always been drawn to plants, from rescuing those discarded on waste ground, even as a child! After doing a fine art degree, working as a photographer, I then qualified as a medical herbalist in 1990, after a 6 year course which involved in depth study of many different aspects ( ancient and modern) of plant lore and working with inspiring and experienced herbalists including as Christopher Hedley, Stephen and Carol Church, and Carol Guyett. I work with people who want to learn how to use herbs sustainably in their own lives to enhance health and well being, teaching them how to identify, cultivate, harvest and make remedies, learning and respecting the power of herbs. I continue to combine arts and science, teaching Japanese woodblock printmaking (Mokuhanga) using water based pigments alongside my herbal practice.

Sandra Morris reviewed: Introduction to herbal medicine - weekend courses

"Last weekend's 2-day introduction to herbal medicine workshop was very enjoyable. Rowan is very knowledgeable and I liked her informal teaching style. The group was also lovely (there were 6 of us + Rowan). Seeing, identifying, touching and nibbling on quite a range of herbs that are growing in her fabulous garden was a treat. I have more confidence now to use herbs more often in food and also in preparations like balms, tinctures and creams."

Rowan Mconegal responded:

"Thanks sandra, and I’m so happy that you enjoyed the course. June is such a great time to meet the herbs in flower 🙏🏼🦋🌸"

Steph Jackson reviewed: Introduction to herbal medicine - weekend courses

"My sister and I recently attended this course and had such a wonderful weekend. We learnt so much about the power of herbs and how to use them to enrich our lives. Rowan is a fantastic teacher, her informal workshop allowed us to learn so much in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We really enjoyed the practical aspect of how to make our ointments, creams and teas. Something we would definitely continue to do at home too. She has a beautiful garden where we were able to walk around and identify the plants we were talking about too. Looking forward to attending another course of Rowan's in the near future! "

Rowan Mconegal responded:

"Thanks for your lovely review Steph, your feedback is much appreciated, and I am so happy that you both enjoyed the weekend and plan to use the knowledge and experience in the future. I look forward to seeing you again, and meanwhile, Happy herbalising! "

Ewan Bell reviewed: Japanese woodblock printmaking - two day course

"I thoroughly enjoyed this 2 day course, it was an excellent grounding in the basic technique of Japanese Woodblock printing. The course was well structured, in my opinion, with a good balance of mostly practical learning with information and explanation imparted at appropriate times. I would definitely consider doing a further course with Rowan."

Rowan Mconegal responded:

"Thanks Ewan, so glad you enjoyed it - and looking forward to seeing you again! "
