I thoroughly enjoyed a 2-day, one-to-one beginners’ course with Don in February. He has an excellent workshop in a wonderful part of Cornwall. Don is not only a remarkable woodturner but also an excellent teacher who is very generous with his knowledge, is patient and very encouraging. With Don’s guidance, I achieved far more in two days than I ever imagined I would and took home some impressive trophies. The course has inspired me to buy my own lathe in the near future, and I feel sure that I will soon be returning for some more expert tuition from Don. I will also be looking forward to some more of Carol’s tea and biscuits, and delicious lunches! If you have ever thought of trying your hand at woodturning then I would definitely recommend a day or two (or more!) with Don.
Stuart Brown - - #28705
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you for your kind comments Stuart. Your new lathe will give you a lot of pleasure and satisfaction. Good luck with the house move. I hope that you've got space for 'The Shed'.
Don is an excellent teacher with a vast knowledge on all aspects of turning. 1 to 1 teaching really works as Don can tailor it to any specific needs. I spent a day with Don and will probably return sometime soon for further tuition. Thanks Don and thank Carol for supplying refreshments and lunch. A lovely guy with a passion for wood.
Alan - - #27358
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thanks Alan..You were an excellent, enthusiastic student, and now that you have got your own lathe set up, you will make good progress. All the best.
My wife bought me a 1day course with Don for my birthday last July. I now wish I had taken it up earlier rather than wait until mid November, It was wonderful. Don is a very patient instructor with an incredible depth of knowledge and a good sense of humour. The information he gave was very relevant with reading material to back up his instruction. I have now been smitten and am actively researching the best lathe for my ability. Both he and his wife were very amiable which made the whole day very satisfying. I would definitely recommend this course to others.
Mick Maguire - - #26524
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thanks Mick,
Don was able to project his knowledge and skills in a very inclusive way, so that I felt part of each operation with his guidance. From selection and sharpening of chisels to marking out and centreing the wood block in the lathe, Don was very skilled in sharing his experience. Adding his anecdotal related discussions, gleaned from many years of wood-turning, made my time with Don a very enjoyable experience. Highly recommended. Thanks.
Peter Hazeldean - - #25558
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you Peter..I hope that you can make some time to continue with woodturning during your hectic house refurbishing project.
Many thanks Don for a very enjoyable and informative day. I never expected to achieve so much in just one day, you are an excellent teacher. I would certainly recommend one of your courses to anyone.
Also a big thank you to Carol for the excellent teas, coffees and lunch.
Bob Sampson - - #25051
Response from Don White Woodturning:Hello Bob..Thank you for your comments, it was a pleasure to have you in my workshop. I hope that you are able to spend some time developing your woodturning skills.
Attended a 2 day beginner's course with Don in September. Don is extremely knowledgeable with a great teaching style which both relaxes you and instils confidence. You can throw as many questions at him as you like and he obliges with clear and logical explanation. His practical tuition and feedback enabled me to make good progress and produce some nice pieces of work to bring away. I felt he quickly grasped what I was looking to achieve and helped me more than meet those goals by the end of the 2 days. I can't recommend him highly enough, absolutely brilliant and I hope to see him and Carol again once I've progressed to the next level.
Ian Fuller - - #24949
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you Ian, you were an excellent student we enjoyed your company.
I enjoyed my day with Don and his wife. The one to one teaching really made the course successful. The course content enabled me as a novice to get an understanding of the fundamentals of woodturning and what would be required in terms of technique and equipment should I decide to take the hobby further.
His workshop is a spacious and safe environment to learn in. Catering arrangements worked well with the couple allowing their students to share their home at lunchtime.
I would recommend the course to others and would also return for a refresher.
Martin Jones - - #24809
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thanks Martin..With your natural ability and enthusiasm you should make good progress with your new hobby.
In choosing which course to take for my beginner lesson in wood turning I searched many sites and read many reviews. I chose a course with Don partly for location but mainly due to the amazing reviews.
Well I have to say wholeheartedly that the course did not disappoint. Being a 1:1 day, the course was taken at my speed and everything I needed to know was explained thoroughly with practical hands on learning. Don is an incredibly knowledgeable gentleman and this showed through the course, with excellent teaching. Thank you to Mrs White who provided a beautiful lunch and refreshments through the day. I would definitely recommend Don and wish him well for the future.

Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you for the feedback Nicky.
My son (23) and myself attended Don's one day wood turning course with no prior experience, and came away feeling totally enthused and inspired to do more. Don is such a good teacher and his workshop is stocked with every chisel, seasoned wood, sandpapers and wood turning tools of the trade imaginable, overlooking open countryside, is a perfect setting for a truly memorable visit! Our only regret is that we didn't book a two day course, which would have been twice as enjoyable! Thanks for your patience and hospitality Don! Peter & Hugh
Peter Whitaker - - #23920
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you Peter. The enthusiasm and ability to learn, from both Hugh and yourself, made for a pleasant day all round..Kind regards.
I've always wanted to try wood-turning and the one day I spent with Don was a perfect introduction. I was amazed at how much I learned in a day, and the quality of the items I made was amazing. Don's friendly manner and the wonderful area made it a perfect day.
Karen Hampson - - #23355
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you Karen..You were an excellent student, it was a pleasure to teach you.
I had an excellent day course with Mr. White. His thorough, hands-on approach was exactly what I was looking for as a joinery student and a wood turning beginner. I would recommend anyone looking to learn about turning to visit Mr White as his experience cannot be matched. He is also a true gentleman and a pleasure to spend time with.
Tom Reed - - #23302
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you for the feedback Tom..Much appreciated.
I had not done any woodturning for 50 years since schooldays. Don's calm and reassuring style gave me the confidence to reignite an interest and appreciation of turning to bring out the beauty and variety of wood, and the joy of creating something. Although he earned a living from turning, he clearly has a passion for it too!
His pragmatic approach meant I never felt that good results were unachievable by a beginner, although his skill and many years of experience shone through when watching him turning and looking at some of his work.
A lovely setting, friendly welcome, well equipped workshop, nice lunch prepared by his wife Carol, and producing a couple of nice pieces to take home completed the package.
Thank you Don (and my wife Lynn for booking the course)!
Steve Wood - - #23126
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thanks for the feedback Steve we are pleased that you enjoyed the day.
Don is an excellent teacher and a very skilled wood turner. I had been on a couple of wood turning courses before this one and Don tailored the course to my level rather than following a set routine. He reinforced the basics while building on the skills I had learnt previously.
During the day, I made a garden dibber and a small bowl, the skills from which have given me more confidence to continue at home on my own lathe.
The lunch prepared by Don's wife was also excellent.
Ian Newbury - - #22961
Response from Don White Woodturning:The review is much appreciated Ian..Thank you.
An extraordinary couple of days with Don. As a complete novice, I had some trepidation about working on a lathe but Don’s calm manner and expert guidance and encouragement meant I progressed a great deal further than I had anticipated.
William Bolton - - #22916
Response from Don White Woodturning:Thank you for the feedback Will. Much appreciated.
Don is a brilliant tutor who is calm, patient and concise, which inspires major confidence to those wishing to pursue woodturning. Not to mention he has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field and doesn't make you feel foolish when asking simple questions. As a result of it being a one-on-one course and his brilliant tuition, you move through it at your own pace, never feeling like you're waiting to move on.
I would highly recommend anyone, from those who've never touched a tool to those that have a firm grasp of woodworking. You will definitely walk away having learnt a lot and confidence to do it yourself.
Rhodri Jones - - #22504
A very patient and experienced tutor who, at the end of the course, sent me on my way eager to get cracking practising what Don had me doing on the course. When I am more experienced I will return for some more of Don’s experience. I was made very welcome by Carol, Don’s wife and they are a wonderful team together.
John Unwin - - #21467
This was a most pleasant and informative 2 days!
Don is a master at what he does - not only are his turning skills and creativity amazing, but his ability to encourage and teach others in a most accessible way is, in my opinion very rare. He seems to have a passion to enthuse others so that they might experience the same pleasure from Woodturning that he obviously has. His patience with me as a hopeless beginner was endless!
Then the is the warm hospitality that greets you and stays with for the whole two days delivered by both done and his charming wife.
This course was a memorable experience - bit darn special!
Graham Perrins - - #20565
Response from Don White Woodturning:Graham..Thank you for the feedback. Very much appreciated.
I was fortunate enough to spend 2 mornings with Don and learned precisely how each turning tool must be used to cut with control. I would recommend this to all aspiring wood turners. Don is an excellent teacher with a well set up workshop. It was a great experience.
