About the Course

Create mola work, a type of reverse applique, stitching layers of contrasting fabrics and cutting areas away in the tradition of the Cuna peoples, San Blas Islands , Republic of Panama. Technique can also be used with layers of felt.

World Textiles consists of six progressive, linked course across the academic year, each exploring a different technique in relation to felt making. Mola work is a type of reverse applique made up of stitched layers of contrasting fabrics, with areas cut away, creating striking patterns of a variety of themes and stories. Inspired by Cuna culture and their environment, it is used to decorate the Cuna Indians traditional Mola blouse. Mola work is traditionally worked on a cotton fabric, but can also be applied to felt and a variety of other materials. This technique can be used to create wall pieces, vessels, soft furnishings, accessories, garments and sculptural pieces.
