About the Course

Learn to dye wool fibres, threads and cloth to use in felt making and textile work. Build confidence with cold water reactive, acid and natural dyes to colour cotton, wool and silk. Space dyeing to yield multi coloured effects.

Learn about the history of European dyes and the trade in dyes, introduced from the New World, including logwood and cochineal. Learn to dye wool fibres, threads and cloth to use in your felt making and textile work. Build confidence with using cold water fibre reactive, acid and natural dyes -woad, madder and weld etc. to colour animal and plant fibres including cotton, wool and silk . Space dye threads and fibre to yield multi coloured and ombre effects.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Have an understanding of European Dyes- history and trade dyes.
Dye a variety of fibres, threads and materials using synthetic and natural dyes, including space dyeing and ombre effects.
Make a sampler book of dyed materials.
Understand and use sustainable dye practices and materials.
Use dyed materials to create a of textile 2D or 3D piece.
Class format and activities
Tutor will demonstrate techniques in dyeing; informal tutorials and one to one feedback; students are encouraged to share experiences and ideas.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements
Interest in World Textiles and cultures.

What you need to know before you enrol
The studio is on the second floor of the Nancy Sear Building accessible by lift to the first floor, and stairs or stair lift to the second floor.
